Stephen king said he wanted to write an epic tale akin to Tolkiens the hobbit. He did not do this. What king did was create an all encompassing mythos that far surpasses Tolkien (imo). The dark tower series is like the weather in Texas if you dont like it give it a minute it will change. I suggest that you read the entire series before passing judgment and then move on to the stand or it

Come on, Dana, King and guys like George RR Martin are playing in the world created by Tolkien, there wouldnt be any modern fantasy with out him!
Those books were horrible. I loathed them. If I had to listen to the fairies, orcs, hobbits, elves, dwarves, humans sing one more damn song, I was opening a vein.

Hahhahahahahha, but what about the songs in the tower series? I'll admit that they are slow at times but once they get going they are great!
Okay, here's the thing. I listened to the Tolkein books on audio and the narrator sang every single song in the same monotone key. Every single one. So that just killed it for me. Every time we got to a song, I was practically flogging myself trying to get through his singing. Maybe if I had read the books I wouldn't have had such a horrible gut ache reaction.

In the tower series, I read the books. The songs were all different tunes in my head.

The king of elf lands daughter is an amazing pre Tolkien fantasy story and there are many many more Tolkien just got all the credit just like how twilight gets the credit for making vampires sexy.
