1. The Nun - Takes place in romania in a nunnery where evil is on the lose.. Not bad at all 3,5/5
2. Jigsaw - A sequel to the Saw-movies. But more like the actually good first movie than the gore followups. 3/5
3. 2012 - A disaster flick but i'm counting it. After all, the End of the World is a horrifying concept. 2,5/5
4. In The Tall Grass - Liked it! I must here with shame admit that i havent read the book. I liked the limericks!! 4/5
5. Down A Dark Hall - The plot sounds totally corny when i wrote it in my head but while the movie is going it works well. 3,5/5

8. Midsommar (FTV)

After a horrible family tragedy, a young woman joins her boyfriend and his student friends on a trip to a remote Swedish commune that seems to be more like a pagan cult. Drawing obvious inspiration from The Wicker Man, Midsommar surpasses its source material artistically, in its stark brutality, and in its unflinching ability get under your skin. Leisurely paced at nearly 2 and a half hours, the viewer shares the characters' experience as you get more drawn in, forgetting about the ordinary world you left behind. You have time to think about group dynamics, societal pressure to conform, the nature of life, religion, and death. There are none of the types of "darkness and BOO" type scares that seem to plague modern horror, this is more difficult and risky horror to make, and not everyone will find it to their tastes. The camera does not look away, and neither can we.

5 out of 5 stars.

16.) Devil's Gate (2017 - Horror/Sci-Fi/Thriller). This one was set in ND. They definitely got the landscape right. And didn't try to replicate the accent. The dad from This Is Us played the lead and was very passionate and believable IMHO. But they might be hard-pressed to find
intelligent life
around these parts. :laugh:This movie didn't get great reviews, but it was much better than I thought it would be.

apparently at the same time they were making the theatrical film Truth or Dare for Blumhouse i believe, they were making a version for SyFy (god save me from that stupid freaking rename of that channel). ran across this on netflix, thought, why not. turned out to not be entirely bad, and definitely had moments to make you cringe (although more in a ew way than a scare way tbh. it's no Hostel but it gets a little intense). college kids play Truth or Dare in a spooky old house that a group of kids played Truth or Dare in in the 80's that all died, save one, as people in movies do because they're stupid. "hey guys, a bunch of people died doing this, wouldn't it be cool if we also did this?" cue malevolent presence that forces them to play along, but of course, it's a demon so it cheats and makes them do things they're unlikely to survive. bonus points for nobody was flashing a weird CGI demon grin (if you don't know what i mean look up images for the Blumhouse version). featuring an appearance by Heather Langenkamp of Nightmare on Elm Street fame as the sole survivor of the 80's. people who wrote reviews of this seemed to be confused and think it was remade in 2018 despite it's 2017 release because "it sucked" (everyone's a critic) but the timing in no way works out. just another case of hollywood making simultaneous movies with the exact same subject. they're good at that.

2. The Babysitter
3. Horns
4. Scream
5. Scream 2
6. Scream 3

8) Don’t Go to Sleep (1982) FTV – A family moves into a new house, but their oldest daughter, who was killed in a recent car accident, decides to come along. Starring Valerie Harper and Dennis Weaver as the parents and Ruth Gordon as Gramma. This was pretty dated, but ok for its time. – 3/5

9) Witchboard (1986) – One of my favorites and an annual tradition. It’s campy and 80s and watching this shows you that Tawny Kitaen has always had the potential to be a husband beater. – 3.5/5

10) Halloween (1978) – Watched this one with my daughter for her first time! It was great seeing her reactions! She is now hooked. I’m a good mom! – 5/5

Forgive me, I haven't read the entire thread - sometimes if I read too much on the computer I get a headache - but I just want to mention the other day I watched Urban Legend, the one with Robert Englund. Nothing profound, but it was just a fun film. I had seen it when it came out, and it was one of those post-Scream films that really captured the essence of that time. There was of course the earlier part of the thread that focused on Scream and its prologue, and yes, I agree, it is possible to count the prologue as a separate work in and of itself in this thread. The Barrymore section is really a great short film in its own right, and sets a solid, scary tone. Scream is an important part of horror-film history in that it catalyzed a whole new way of presenting plot-oriented pieces, with slick cinematography backed by stock characters spouting witty dialogue that served as a time capsule for the generation in which it was released. Legend was basically a Scream in a different coat, and for that I appreciated it then and now. I watched it by chance on that Pluto ad-supported-video-on-demand service. Another film that came later that is also a favorite and that may be appropriate for the season: Cry Wolf, if you remember it.

But I also wanted to mention that I wasn't aware of the Two-Sentence project. I definitely will check that out. It's exactly the type of thing I like: something totally driven by concept. As I get older, I tend to favor concept/plot over character. Guess it's a time-management thing.

One last thing: also watched recently the first three tales in Tales of Halloween. The rest of the movie is very - very - hit or miss. I think the whole ten-parts-or-more anthology genre has about run its course for the moment, but those first three tales are really good, especially the second one, about a kid named Billy raising Hell..

And you can bet I will watch the great Trick 'r Treat.......and I will try to get to the rest of the thread later, thanks...some great posts here...

9. The Banana Splits Movie (FTV)

Childhood favorite Saturday morning TV variety show is reworked as a slasher where the now animatronic 'Splits get revenge when their long run is cancelled. While the whole concept seems ridiculous, and it most certainly is, what's most surprising about TBSM is how everyone plays it completely straight, which is sorta admirable, I guess. I was expecting a campy flick with lots of snarky winking at the camera, but what I got was an apparently earnest B-movie slasher with a "Five Nights At Freddy's" vibe. While not a period piece, it feels like an 80's VHS release paying homage to the 70's with all its earth tone cinematography and set design. Although oddly lifeless and at at times a bit dull, the kills are truly spectacular and are the movie's saving grace. Who'd have thought The Banana Splits were so capable of embracing the R rating? Makes me wonder what's coming next, maybe something involving Chuck E. Cheese, "Chuck Amok" perhaps?

3 out of 5 stars.

9. The Innocents

This is one of my favorite gothic movies. Watch the trailer. It is definitely a toss into the wayback machine in how horror movie trailers were made. Actually, it is very insulting to the movie itself. This is a smart gothic, horror, suspense, psychological thriller and the trailer turned it into cheese.

No blood, no gore. The children are the best children actors I've ever seen. Their faces you will know from other movies. Based on the Henry James novel.
