Sad day

Mookie Betts and David Price traded to the Dodgers.

I'm fine with Price going. Definitely going to miss Mookie. I understand the trade from the business end but Mookie is the second best player in baseball right now. I wish him luck with the Dodgers.

I just hope Mookie does not sign with NY next season when he hits free agency. Then I will be forced to disown him! If the rumors of the $420m contract he is seeking are true there only a few teams that can afford to shell out that dough. The one he left, the Yankees. and the Dodgers. Dodgers would be foolish not to try and extend his contract.

I'm sick of the local sportswriters whining and crying about the Mookie Betts trade. No one liked the trade but it's time to move on. What really gets me is that everyone already has Mookie penciled in for the HOF. I think it's a bit too early for those predictions. Case in point, Nomar. He looked like a HOF lock after his first 7 seasons (better than Jeter in every way up to that point). We all know what happened after that. Nomar had multiple Injuries and bounced around to several teams before retiring. He ended his career with average numbers.

Then there is the money aspect. Yes the Red Sox are the third wealthiest team in MLB. Yes they could have given Mookie 12 years and $420 million dollars. However, is that a smart business move? No. We all know how long-term, huge money deals play out. They are almost always a disaster for the team in the end. If that deal had been made Mookie would be 38 at the end of it. Players whose game is primarily built around speed and hand quickness almost always drop a level or three in their early thirties. Do you want to be shelling out premier player dough for an average player? No.

Comparisons to the Yankees and Dodgers are a bit off kilter as well. Why? Both of those teams already shed payroll to get under the luxury tax threshold and reset their financial penalties. It would have cost Boston an additional $90 to $100 million in tax penalties and loss of first round draft picks to make that Mookie deal now. So, OK great, you have Mookie. But what about the rest of the roster? It would be a huge financial handicap. They'd be filling in the roster with marginal players because that would be all they could afford without incurring further financial penalties. Granted, they put themselves in that position with the Price, Sale, and Evoldi deals. But what's done is done. Ask Mike Trout what it's like to be the best and highest paid player in the game surrounded by mediocre talent. No playoff wins or WS titles for Mr. Trout. Not gonna have them anytime soon either.

It's not like the Red Sox are devoid of talent. They still have several star players on the team. While I don't expect a playoff appearance in 2020, I also don't expect a 90 loss season either. Ultimately, the Red Sox have won 4 WS titles over the last 16 years. To be whining about missing the playoffs for a couple of years is ludicrous.

Don't get me wrong, I will miss Mookie. I also hope he does not ultimately end up in pinstripes. That would be a killer. It's definitely a realistic fear. If the Yankees are smart they will try and dump Stanton on someone after this season and focus on signing Mookie.

Mookie has said all along that he wants to test his value on the free-agent market. I can respect that. He turned down a $300 million dollar offer from Boston and is reportedly refusing to talk long-term with the Dodgers. He'll have to have a monster year to realistically expect a $400 million dollar payday. I wish him luck. Judt stay away from NY!
