The events at which there were pre-signed books that are randomly distributed were speaking appearances at which people get a chance to see Steve for a much longer time than they would at a signing, they can get a sense of who he is as a person as well as the writer, and there is usually a reading and a Q&A session. The reason the books are distributed randomly is to make it less likely that someone who is only going to sell the book for a profit will be guaranteed a signed book and knowing that will be more likely to pass on the event and that space will be used by someone who is truly a fan.
Maybe sit them down and ask them "20 questions" to ascertain that they are a true Constant Reader and not some money grubbing opportunist? :frog:

I am and always will be thankful for actually getting to meet Mr. King and shake his hand. I got to meet him at the 11/22/63 event in Dallas, TX on November 10th, 2011. I had never been to ANYTHING like this before. I've wanted to just tell him thanks and keep on doing what he does for thirty years. When someone's books mean so much to you along that kind of timeline you take part of those books as your own. In the good times, the bad times, and the really $h1tty times of my life, Mr. King has kept on writing wonderful tales and they have always allowed me something to focus on when I needed to get out of my head. So anyway, I'm wondering around the top floor of the Majestic Theater with the other people who bought the ticket for the meet and greet. I met some really cool people, some from as far away as Boston. There was no fanfare at all, one minute I was drinking a glass of something, don't remember what, but it tasted expensive, then I turn to my left that there is Stephen King, just kind of standing there drinking a bottle of water and looking like he had just popped in to see the local night life or something. He was such an...ordinary type of guy. There was no aura about him, no special light. He was just a helluva guy who seemed to have time to talk to every single person in the room, people asked him questions about books, about the Red Sox, he took the time to answer everyone with the same easygoing "how ya' doin?" attitude. He was great to be around. Some people say it's not smart to meet your heroes and I agree with that for the most part but my hero was a helluva nice guy and seemed genuinely inquisitive and curious about his fans. Thanks again for coming to Dallas, TX Mr. King. We were well met on the path of the beam that night, I say thank-ya sir.

I was there yesterday in Sarasota. My son recently began his first SK book-- The Shining. We were #'s 300 & 301 of 400. Steve looked good and like he'd been getting some sun. What's very surprising is there were a sizable number of people who ordered or phoned in for tickets and didn't show up. The book store people all commented on that. The ice cream store next door was decidedly less happy about the event taking place.

All in all it was a good event. Time with Sai King was very brief. I'd say he was probably done with all the signings in an hour. But, we got 2 copies signed. One will be a gift for a close friend and Constant Reader who will probably never get a chance to go to a signing like this.

He's a good man. Why create a madhouse when it could be enjoyable for all?
It was still a madhouse. There were several people getting belligerent and testy about the somewhat disorganized nature of the line at first. Once they started calling people by numbers, that removed most of the problems. As I said, the ice cream store next door was pretty upset by the whole thing. I think a lot of the people in line kept asking to use their bathroom. Which, they shared with the bookstore and the hallway between was how you exited. My son and I had ice cream before we got in line and when I went back to use the restroom, SK was there and getting ready to start. I think some peeps were trying to catch him outside the signing to get other things not on the agenda penned.

I watched the movie House again over the weekend. That scene of the fans in line for the horror author’s book signing always sticks in my mind, and probably why I never wanted to go to an SK signing event. (fear of trying to act cool and reserved, and suddenly turning into one of those "biggest fans ever" LOL)
