Watched 'One & Two' starring Kiernan Shipka (from Mad Men) and Timothee Chalamet. Siblings Eva and Zac are cut off from society in a remote farmhouse, their insular world bounded by an enormous wall. But as the pair begins exploring their extraordinary, potentially dangerous supernatural abilities, a mystery arises: is their strict disciplinarian father trying to keep the world out, or to keep his children in? As their father searches for a divine answer to the circumstances of his crumbling world, Zac and Eva steal moments to explore their burgeoning otherwordly powers. This stunningly original sci-fi mind bender is a surprising, thought-provoking look at the bonds that tie families together and the secrets that drive them apart.

This was a different type of movie. Not what I was expecting at all. I would say it was more of a study of a family and its relationships with a touch of sci-fi thrown into the mix. Kept my attention.
Intriguing review. Where did you watch this? netflix? hulu?

I actually bought the bluray. This was released in 2014 but I never even heard of it until a couple of weeks ago when I was on Ebay and was looking for movies that Timothee Chalamet was in. It was produced by the IFC movie channel and I think it was their exclusive movie and could only be seen on that channel.

Dang. Almost gave me a Kelly Braffet vibe.

There is a sequence that definately has a Braffet vibe from 'Save Yourself', Deej. I think you would like this movie. It's not a sci-fi in the sense of aliens or ufo's, just that the kids have a special ability that isn't even really a huge part of the story as the story is more about the family.

I like the road less travelled in movies in any genre. They are refreshing and surprising. So the fact that the special abilities take a back seat to the family dynamic is interesting.

I tried to watch Inception the other night and I couldn't finish it. It was a very Matrix-esque movie to me, that being a blockbuster praised as being so genius and original only for me to not like it. This movie was so booooring to me, I was expecting to see cool reality bending dream stuff en-masse but it was literally just people talking and talking jargon about how it works. Maybe my expectations were too high, I've yet to go through Nolan's catalogue besides his Batman trilogy, where although I hated Batman Begins I absolutely adore The Dark Knight.

I'm trying to get through Ben Hur. It runs 3 hours and 44 minutes. I'm an hour in. This is going to take me forever because I won't sit and watch this thing in a day.

You should see the extended cut. :)

I'm trying to think what the longest movie I've seen in a theater is. I just looked up Malcolm X and it was 202 minutes. I don't think I've seen one longer than that. I remember it was good but my butt was getting tired towards the end.

There's an extended cut? Are you sure this isn't it? bwhahaha!

I've never seen Ben Hur. I am forcing myself to watch it because I must.

Knives Out.

Cracking good mystery yarn. Delightful in its twisty-turny ways.

I'm all about the writing, and this writing was stellar with plotting, arcing, buildup, everything. And if you're all about the acting, these folks were romping in it. Chris Evans in particular tackled his role with zeal and conviction, as if he were enjoying it.

In case it's not coming across, we REALLY LIKED this move.

I hope it's still in the theaters this weekend. I was going to go see it the last two weekends and got sidetracked.

Cloverfield (2008)- Very fun, very unique take on the Kaiju genre. While it has the faults to be expected from a found footage film, it mostly makes up for it with a constant, high octane pace as you watch a giant alien absolutely trash New York City as well as some really good performances. A lot of the characters make stupid choices, but most of them are acknowledged and make sense with the character's goals. A few good scares too. As for big faults, it definitely is a "Why are they still recording" movie, and although the camera holder is made out to be kinda stupid, the degree to which he keeps it on is a little strange sometimes. The cgi on the statue of liberty and some of the little monsters is a little iffy, but it can be ignored. Not a flawless movie, but still a very fun and original thrill ride that goes by pretty quickly. 7/10

Lupin the Third: The Castle of Cagliostro (1979)- Japanese Anime film about a world renowned thief and his gang going to investigate the source of a worldwide counterfeiting scheme. This was Hayao Miyazaki’s directorial debut, before he founded Studio Ghibli. It feels nice to finally have watched this seeing how he is one of my favorite foreign directors. I love the artsyle of this film, it abandons a more stereotypical anime style for a more pulp-comic book look. The set design and soundtrack are absolutely stunning, as to be expected from a Miyazaki film. My one problem with the animation is that sometimes it looks pretty choppy.

The plot is definitely heavily inspired by the western spy films that would’ve been popular at the time, notably James Bond. There are a few plot lines I didn’t fully understand, but maybe that’s because I can’t read the English subtitles very fast while simultaneously listening to the Japanese audio.

Overall a very fun adventure movie with likeable characters. It’s on Netflix at the moment so I’d definitely give it a watch if you like James Bond-esque films or are a fan of Miyazaki’s other work. I’m aware there is a 3D animated sequel/prequel in the works at the moment that looks absolutely stunning. 7/10

Marriage Story (2019)- I'm not even a big fan of dramas, I just heard this film was good and gave it a watch. I was blown away at just how amazing it was, it is such a touching film about a difficult subject. Despite how big of stars some of the cast were, they disappeared underneath the characters. There isn't even too much to describe about the film without watching it, it doesn't have a very grand plot, just about a family falling apart yet staying together. The one big problem in the film is some terrible editing in some scenes. I cannot recommend it enough if you have Netflix. 9/10

Watched Logan's Run (1976) which I have always loved, but hadn't seen in ages. It's very much old school sci-fi, even when it came out only a year prior to Star Wars.
At times it reminds me of later sci-fi films like Total Recall or Escape from New York. It's also a super sexy film, with the gorgeous Jenny Agutter in rather revealing costumes. The costumes' colours have meaning within the story, as each age group has different coloured costumes. Storywise it's also a bit like a sci-fi version of Children of the Corn, with a society where people aren't allowed an old age.
Also the story clearly has elements from the first Planet of the Apes.

The miniatures of the futuristic domed city where the story starts look nice, but clearly like models. The matte paintings of an overgrown, dilapidated Washington however look really good.
A lot was also filmed in a mall in Texas, when malls where just fairly new and not so known to the public at large. It was done to reduce costs, as they couldn't build such big sets in the studio anyway.
The audiocommentary by the director, star Michael York and costume designer is very interesting and informative. It isn't the most original of films and clearly is influenced by other films (especially the original Planet of the Apes in a visual sense for the world outside the domed city), but as a sexy sci-fi it's way better and more intelligent than Barbarella.
It's also pretty action packed and a lot happens, it only slows down after the escape from the city and in the scenes with Peter Ustinov (who Michael York says is an unapologetic thief who steals every scene he's in), who lives with his multitude of cats. There even is a reference to T.S. Eliot's Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats (1939), just as the maligned musical version is in cinemas now!

Sometimes films you haven't seen for ages hold up so very nicely and this one certainly does.

I love Logan's Run. I think it's great. With all its little quirks, I still love it. Saw it in the theater when it first came out and I was a kid. So, sentimental I may be.
