There's nothing I can add that hasn't already been listed here. I love Larry as a character though. His unwilling evolution from , spoiled not so nice, "taker". To his ultimate
self sacrificing, willing to be martyred, mouth-piece for Mother Abigail
I just love him, he seems so REAL.

Yes :wink2:

I have lots of different parts - Harold's plot, the build up to it and the actual event, as well as how the characters react after. The moment when you slowly but surely realise that everyone is dying and the flu keeps spreading, with people sneezing, coughing etc. I LOVED Stu and Toms journey back to Boulder in the final 100 pages or so. I was nearly crying when Kojak popped back up, how he fought off Flagg's Wolves, and the way he helped Stu when the A-Bomb went off and Stu's leg was broken. Trashcan Man and The Kid. Also, that one chapter somewhere in the first couple of hunder pages where it just talks about all these people dying for the full chapter - my favourite was the guy whose wife and son died, and he kept them in the refrigerator downstairs in the basement, and when he goes in there to check on them the door closes and he cannot get out, so he dies there with his family. It was such a sad scene. So much happened in the book, and I think it is my favourite by King. I only wish we learned what happened to Fran's boyfriend Jesse, when they left each other before the plague took everyone! I think it would've been interesting to see him pop up in Boulder and he walks past Frannie when she is with Stu!

Slightly besides the point, but reading the posts made me realize this all basically happened in 9 months, considering Frannie was only pregnant for a few weeks or a month when we see her at what is the start of the epidemic. Surprising how much devastation and 'healing' can come in such a…'short' time (short considering the context).

Sorry if this was off topic! It kinda popped up when I was reading this. I also agree with jfra3101 that I kinda wished we found out about Jesse and if he was ever in Boulder.

Another favorite part is When Trashcan Man is walking with the wolves after they trap The Kid in his car.

Also i think Jesse probably died from the superflu because they were saying the chance that both parents were immune was too small.

Oh yeah I love the chapter dedicated to all the losses early on. I always remember the one where the guy with several kids is jogging and replaying the order of their deaths as he jogs until he's the only one left and he basically runs himself to a heart attack. The mini character development was a great side look at the destruction of humanity.

Probably my favorite scene was Kojak's battle with the wolves, with the minor qualification that I'm a fan of wolves and their culture, brutal though it may be, and they were demonized a bit too much for my liking, like it was back to the medieval stories. That's a quibble, not a criticism. It was still a great scene there at Mother Abigail's house, with Kojak making his own Stand.

My favourite of those was the girl who was convinced that every guy wanted to rape her, so when a drunk leered at her
she shot at him with a gun using bullets so old and decrepit that it exploded and killed her.

That was awesome! The way Kojak hid under the porch and waited for the Wolves to go away was incredible. Also, the way he found his way to Boulder... Heart warming stuff!

A lot of favourite part obviously but if I had to pick one it is the setting of the stage so to say. When he in the beginning of the book descripes how the plague strikes, how cars crash into gasstops and so on. You really get the feeling of whats happening and are introduced to several of the major characters when disaster first strike their lives. It is perfectly written. Never seen a better description on how a severe illness strike a society.

I'm only up to the point where Larry meets Nadine and Joe, but so far, there have been three standout scenes in particular for me:
  • Stu getting grabbed round the ankle by a crazed flu victim as he tries to escape the Vermont facility. Of anything I've read of King's so far, this has to be the most unsettling and downright scary. And I'm pleased to see that they did the moment justice in the TV miniseries adaptation.
  • Starky descending down into the depths of the research facility to commit suicide. Starky's sense of failure and desperation was perfectly displayed. So macabre and sorta darkly funny how the facility kept being called a tomb.
  • The news team of a television studio rebelling against their captors and choosing to get the word out to public that there was an epidemic silently unfolding under their noses.

1.
The Holland tunnel (is it that tunnel? I don't have a copy of The Stand with me at the moment) escape by Larry and Rita. So creepy and nasty and horrible.

2.
Mother Abagail prepping for company....her journey next to the rows of corn...the weasels...her fatigue...her dreams. And then how everyone is so appreciative when they arrive at her home in Nebraska, and see her, and eat, and are finally, even if temporarily, relaxed.

3.
After all his horrible deeds, Harold Lauder's deserved demise. That rang true with me, especially because he'd been responsible for Nick's death. It just about killed *me* when Nick was killed.

4.
Flagg's reactions to both Dayna's and Nadine's deaths. Curses - foiled again!

So, I just recently read this starting this summer. I finished it and now it is my favortie SK novel so far(used to be IT until I read this masterpiece). I did not read the original, I read The Stand:Complete and Uncut Version, so i guess saved me time from reading the original one, but maybe in the future i will read that one too to see differences. I love this book and the concept and everything. I have heard a few rumors of there being another miniseries? or something, but I am not sure, i want to watch the original miniseries and see what its like but I have heard it isn't as good as the book. There are so many scenes I like and I will try to list my favs(SPOILERS AHEAD:
- when Stu and Fran finally get together(after Fran thought she lost him to Dayna)
- Pretty much ANY scene with The Kid in it, I don't know why, but he was so funny and his little catchphrase"happy crappy"
- Nick and Tom Cullen scenes, and in a way they were so heartbreaking(the saddest was when Tom has that dream when him and Stu are on their way back to the Free Zone and Tom tells him how excited he is to see Nick but nick is dead:Z::sweat:.)which leads to my next one:
- When Stu and Tom journey back to the Free Zone(the Christmas scene, all that)and i serously thought Stu was gonna die
- I dont really think this is a favorite but the scenes with Rita and Larry were always weird/sad, and i had mixed feelings when she died
- When Larry first met Nadine and Joe/Leo and he was putting a hose in gorun?(something like that) and he noticed the "silly little pantomime" he was doing, and how bad he wanted her and eventually it was too late for her b/c he was with Lucy Swann(kinda sad she was too late and she ended up with Harold which she just ended up leaving him for dead with a shattered leg:flat::0:.
- When Nick SHOWED Julie Lawry how to act and hit her when she was being a butthole for manipulating Tom(but she got back by slashing their tires.)
- When I found out Frannie's baby Peter(named after her father)was okay
- Mixed feelings when Harold tried(and succeeded the first time) to kiss fran and he told her he loved her but she didnt
- The "no great loss" chapter
- The chapters with Len Starkey and whats his name and the chapter with the Tv broacasting with the news, executions and that one guys name I dont remember that was a radio host
- heartbreaking scene where Nick was with Jane Baker her last moment of life and he dressed her in her wedding dress
- for some reason when Nick let Mike Childress go
- Charles Campion scenes
- Stu and his pals before flu outbreak
- for some odd reason the fight between Fran and Carla Goldsmith(her mother)
-Lloyd and Poke scenes and when Lloyd was in jail and was about to eat Trask:saddd::0:(but Randall Flagg came)

I could go on and on but I won't.....

I loved Tom and Stu's journey back aswell. I hated the kid though and most of his parts though, except the bit with the wolves.

I liked Nicks parts in the jail, and Nick and Tom's journey to Nebraska - the tornado, the bike rides, the bitch in the drug store etc.

OMG REMEBERED THE SCENE WHERE while Stu was reading Harolds ledger, Larry was drinking coffee with Fran and in another room, Joe/Leo was playing the guitar and Larry heard a familiar tune and "he paused his cup" and her heard Leo/Joe sing "baby can you dig your man" and he dropped his coffee and Fran was all like"i wonder who wrote that" and Larry pretended not to know who sang it LOL my favorite scene above the rest

The scene where Nick meets Tom is great, but I think the journey back to The Free Zone is the most heartwarming moments in a book I’ve read, it may have added an extra 100 pages to a novel that had already practically ended, but it was so nice to watch Tom and Stu interact in the situation they were in.
