The hubby raved about this series for so long, I finally caved and watched the first couple episodes (on hulu). It wasn't my thing. Besides the main character, the acting was horrible and the special effects cringe-worthy.
After reading this thread, I will watch the Boogeyman episode before I give up altogether.

I also liked the one where a side plot involved him coaching boxers. At the end, he found out that one of his eager young boxers was named Sylvester Stallone.

There were some profound ones, too, that saw him as a black man in the deep south back in the day, and an unwed pregnant teen. They weren't all just for giggles. Some of 'em were pretty serious.

Have to admit I came to the show pretty late, about a season and a half before the end of its original run, and even then only because a mate of mine who'd watched it from the beginning raved about it and insisted I'd like it, if only I gave it a chance.
Well, he was right. But then I tried watching it again on a recent re-run...and it was beyond horrible. My eyes (and expectations) have been spoiled by modernity.
Taken on its own terms (and viewed through 'It's the 80s!' specs) and it'd probably be fine. It was a trick I couldn't quite manage, though.

Al: Ziggy is blowing out microchips like they were popcorn. He just, he didn't see it coming.
Sam: What?
Al: What? Sam, this is the 17th of June 1972.
Sam: So?
Al: So? We're in the Watergate! Break-in, Nixon, impeachment...
Sam: I don't remember.
Al: Oh, boy. The Republicans would love you.
