The Catcher in the Rye immediately springs to mind....
Good one. That book bores the shorts off of me. Reminds me that I'd add any character from a Jonathan Franzen book. I read two of his and attempted a third, but finally couldn't take it any more. Horrible, whiny drivel. Self-indulgent overrated crap. Oh, and the main character in We Need To Talk About Kevin. I think she was supposed to be sympathetic. She wasn't.

Oh you're in for a treat. I saw an interview with her about TPB. She wrote the book 5 times - each time from a different narrator and then her editor pieced it together. Intriguing.
That book is where Kingsolver lost me. I barely got through it, and can remember almost nothing. I'd really liked her books up to that point, but TPB felt like and entirely different person wrote it. Maybe I should try it again.

It's the only book of hers I have read, so maybe if I had others that were better to compare it with, I might not have liked it as much.

Scarlett O'Hara in Gone With The Wind and the sequel Scarlett. Especially in Scarlett. D*mn, girl, just GROW UP and stop whining about everything!!!!!
I second the vote for Catcher In The Rye. Didn't like him, didn't like the book. It's point was completely lost on me.
Both main characters in Gone Girl. Him especially because he wasn't stark raving mad like she was.

Do you have any favorite narrators? I bet Lestat has to be one of yours, huh?

Delores Claiborne, hands down.
Lestat gets on my nerves sometimes. He always wants MORE, ya know?
Morris Bird III from the trilogy of The Greatest Thing Since Sliced Bread, The Sum & Total Of Now and The Greatest Thing That Almost Happened by Don Robertson is in second place.

Ha! Yeah, Lestat is an interesting character but Rice lets us know his inner thoughts on everything. Doors, architecture, food, animals, spirituality, weather, geography...well, you get the idea.

In movies, some of my most favorite all time guilty pleasure movies are narrated.

Shawshank Redemption
Blame it on Rio
Stand by Me
Storm of the Century
Goodfellas
Sunset Blvd.
A Christmas Story
How the Grinch Stole Christmas
Ferris Bueller's Day Off
A Clockwork Orange
Double Indemnity
The Usual Suspects

Pretty solid list. First-person voice-over narration is a trick that immediately puts the audience at ease...it says, 'Hi, I'll be your escort, relax and trust me on this journey.' And an audience does because we already know the narrator is living or has survived
unless another trick is perpetrated on the viewer like in America Beauty
and therefore not in danger. I enjoy these types of movies, too.
Ferris is one that never gets old. His breaking the fourth wall like Alvie in Annie Hall...just fun.

Bret Easton Ellis is a name that comes to mind. I could never go for his books. Havent tried many, true. American "something" (see I have even forgotten the title!) was supposed to be so good and i just found it boring and, if i dont remember wrong, it had an unsympathetic narrator.

Blame it on Rio was narrated? The only thing I remember about the movie is the beach scene. Will have to watch it again. :)

Good list DJ. I’d add Apocalypse Now, Citizen Kane, Odd Thomas, and Zombieland

Well ... I don't know that "narrator" is the appropriate word, but if the thread is about good writing about people you don't like, I would suggest anything by Philip Roth.
