Another of my favorites from this collection. Creepy in all the wonderful ways! And plenty of reasons to never ever hitchhike.
I hitchhiked a lot in the 70s and only had one bad experience. A guy drove me out of the way down a road. I asked what the heck was going on? It turned out I knew his Mom from working as a Bell telephone operator!

Nothing happened, luckily - the guy just grabbed my wrist to try and stop me from leaving the vehicle.

I think his Mom was one of the worst two-faced 'ladies' in that office - just making an :facepalm_smiley: assumption here, but she probably taught him that girls who hitchhike are just "asking for it" :hammer::redface-new::biggrin2:

But to get back to the thread at hand:

I enjoyed the story very much. Even the movie made from the book (2004) wasn't too bad.

Glad nothing happened ... I almost hitchhiked once. My bike got a flat in the pouring rain and a guy in a pickup truck stopped and gave me a lift to my apartment complex. Not exactly hitchhiking though, hence the "almost" lol

Things were a lot different back then - I knew girls who left Ontario and hitchhiked all the way to BC - I thought they were nuts!

It's a really good story that I'd completely forgotten. Thanks.
