While a great deal of King's work is dark, twisted, raw, and supernatural in nature, underlying that is always a story of ordinary people invited (or thrust) into extraordinary circumstances. His characters find in themselves instinct, compassion, strength, love of man, animals and environment and defend them with ferocity, many times giving up their own lives in that defense.
I don't know if that is why this was such a draw to Get Busy Living to use this collection to distract from self-destructive thoughts, but I know that King's characters attract me like few authors' creations ever have.
