I finally watched La La Land this weekend. I liked it a lot. It was formulaic, but Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling have incredible chemistry. (Ryan Gosling seems to have incredible chemistry with everyone he works with, in my opinion, anyway.)

I enjoyed it much more than I thought I would and the music is wonderful, too. Some of the songs really got under my skin in a good way, especially their little love story theme.

The White Buffalo (1977) **1/2
Handsome if murky weird-western: Charles Bronson is Wild Bill Hickok, who heads back west to track down and kill the titular beast that (for some reason) haunts his dreams. He's aided by Crazy Horse (Will Sampson of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest fame), who seeks the buffalo's pelt for spiritual reasons. Bronson is a fine Wild Bill, but we never quite get into his head, and the white buffalo itself inspires unintentional laughter, not terror, with its Sesame Street like design. The performances of Sampson and Jack Warden help greatly, as does John Barry's menacing score. The second of several vehicles for Bronson directed by J. Lee Thompson.

Derailed (2002) BOMB
This direct-to-video outing from Jean-Claude Van Damme is probably his worst, and that's saying something. The Muscles from Brussels plays a secret agent trapped on a train infected with a stolen smallpox strain that is under siege by terrorists, trying to rescue his family (what else?). Badly written, directed, acted, and especially edited, with glaring plot holes and enough continuity errors to enrage even the most forgiving viewer. They couldn't have selected a better title.

What was the plot line?

It's the background story of the Black Panther and also the story of the aftermath of his father being killed (In Civil War, his father, the king of Wakanda was killed). The background part of the story tells about the African nation of Wakanda and the secret power they are hiding from the world. The current part of the story tells of The Black Panther becoming king of Wakanda and of a challenge to his throne.

The Secret Scriptures based on a book by Sebastian Barry. Movie was pretty good—kept my attention. Started Rooney Mara (whom I love) and the lovely Vanessa Redgrave. Also lovely was my new fake boyfriend, Theo James.

Anybody read the book?
What a cast! I've never heard of this one, but I'll be looking for it to watch. I've loved Theo James since he was on the first season of Bedlam--have you seen that? I watched it on Hulu a couple of years ago. The other seasons were okay, but season 1 (with James) was the best. He was interesting in the Divergent movies, too.

Let me know how you like it! I want to read the book too. Rooney and Redgrave are so beautiful; they play the same character. However, James is prettier than both of them! I’ve not seen Bedlam (no Hulu yet) or the Divergent movies.

Black Panther. It was okay. Not the world-changer media would have one think, but I liked it all right. The acting was good, particularly Chadwick Boseman. It is definitely going to be popular in the US, but I wonder what actual Africans think about it? It seemed particularly made to push American buttons--all the stereotypical "African things" were there: bright colors, rhinos, scarification, the neck rings, lip and ear stretchers, tribal dances--but with no regard as to whose traditions were whose. Just all kind of lumped together. For me, I would have preferred to see a Wakanda made up from whole cloth, not nipped in bits particularly chosen to confirm American stereotypes of Africa. It did have good action, and the aforementioned decent acting, though, so that's something :)

I think he was Lady Mary's lover on the first season of Downton Abbey, too. Greek and English is such a good genetic combination (see: George Michael)

I thought Black Panther was pretty decent for a fantasy movie.

Kind of expected it would have too many political undertones, but it was a fun watch and really not at all inflammatory IMO.

Wakanda was a cool imaginative place.
