Of all the distopian novels and scientific studies on disaster on the scale of The Stand, no other author but Stephen King has discussed what to do about the shutting down of nuclear power plants. I have written to other authors to ak why this most important step is not discussed, I have gotten answers back, usually the answer is: "in the next book"
But no, only King realizes this HAS to happen.

Stephen might have been more aware of it because there was a nuclear power plant (since decommissioned) in Maine.
Well, smart he is, but why not other reputable and fine novelists? You don't need a nuclear power plant in your own back yard to know they will always be with us as waste we put in barrels and pretend it's ok, or don't even think about it, a Damocles sword of our time.

My thinking is this would have been more on his radar both because it was in his home state and there had been a lot of controversy over the building of the plant and possible plant failures which could have been catastrophic for the area. For a writer who doesn't live anywhere near a power plant, it might just not have even occurred to them. Just speculation on my part, of course, as you'd have to ask other writers to get their reasons.
