On Writing: 10th Anniversary Edition: A Memoir of the Craft Paperback

I actually wasn't looking for this one; it was a random purchase. My wife and I were simply perusing the aisles at Barnes and Noble (the one in Paramus, NJ; a great store, by the way) two Saturdays ago, and this book caught my eye -- probably a combination of seeing SK's name in the non-fiction section, plus an eye-catching black & white cover design that features a vintage photo of the author in his beloved workspace. I pulled the book from the shelf, and started reading. Maybe five minutes later, I was smiling and muttering, "OK, sold." Into the basket it went.

I'm a relatively slow reader, but I finished On Writing in four days. I really enjoyed it. Even if you're not a writer yourself, and just a SK fan, there's a lot in these pages to savor: Glimpses into the author's childhood and adolescence, and how he got into the writing business; his writing methodology; common writing advice that he agrees with, and other advice he thinks is mistaken; questions he's often asked; questions SK wishes people would ask him (but seldom do); and a section (at the end) where he discusses The Accident that changed his life. The latter is particularly good -- it reads like fiction.

On Writing is also is sprinkled liberally with many points where the author briefly talks about his wife, how much she means to him, and why. If that sounds sappy, it isn't. Or maybe it is, just a little bit; but I liked it nevertheless. The stereotypical married man jokes & complains about his wife, often for a cheap laugh; here's a guy who is clearly devoted to and still deeply in love with his wife. Tabby means the world to him. It's nice, is all.

EDIT: I almost forgot! Curious about what SK himself is reading / has read / enjoys reading? This edition contains a list of 180 books that SK has read over the past decade or so. (He's read more than this, obviously; but these are some of his favorites.) How SK finds time to read for enjoyment, I have no idea, but somehow he manages. Check it out.

Not a purchase but I do have to buy the materials… A long time ago I made bean bag sets (the type popular in northeast PA, which are different than cornhole sets) for friends and family. With the prototype set we painted a Tim Curry Pennywise type character on the face. That was over 15 years ago and the one we have since used. It has seen better days and the wife REALLY wants a NEW and BETTER Pennywise bean bag set. I’ve been putting it off but she’s getting cranky about the whole thing. Thought I would update the Pennywise character. What do ya’ll think? I think I’ll take a day or two off in the next few week and build a set.

I just picked up a copy for the Group Read.
I will take this time to offer a friendly reminder to those participating to begin reading your copy now. You'll need to complete part one (Book One) by the first meeting in September. Thanks.
Done- if this rain keeps up, there will be an over abundance of reading time!!

Last week I posted that I found The Stand (the original) and the Bachman Books for $20.00 Cdn.
She has offered me the remaining books for $25.00. I have posted the pic she sent. Can anyone tell me what Dark Tower book is to the right of Hearts in
Atlantis? I just cannot figure out what book that is.
