Hello, I'm from Brazil and for my final paper I'm working on Hearts in Atlantis first chapter.
Who can help me, what does the sentence that Bobby's mom say mean: "I SHOULD SAY NITZY"

Thanks
Hi there - I just read this (page 29 of the hardcover), near the bottom.

It's where Bobby tells his mother that Ted Brautigan asked him to call him "Ted".

His Mom replies:

"You won't - I should say nitzy! You don't know him from Adam".

My guess is that it means "I should say not!" - probably just local slang for saying no. Not sure where it came from but that is the gist of it.

Hope this helps!

I agree with you, Neesy. Maybe it is somehow related to the word 'nix'? I don't know. As in, "my wife nixed our plans to go golfing because it was too hot." So, both are words that negate something. That's my interpretation.

Great book - now I am kicking myself for not picking up "Hearts in Suspension" when I had a chance in Bangor!
