18. The Nightmare (FTV)

Documentary about people who suffer sleep paralysis and night terrors and the hallucinations that go with them. We see that there are recurring night visitors such as The Shadow People, the Grays, cat-like gargoyles, and the Man with the Black Hat (who I myself saw a couple times as a very young child, along with several of my siblings). Even though this is a doc, it was genuinely unsettling at times and really made me think, because it's based on actual experiences.

Anecdote after anecdote has similar motifs and occurrences, for what is a very personal experience, so it makes you wonder why. Most of the interviews are voice-overs accompanied by re-enactments, a few of which are a little cheesy, but for the most part they are good and enhance the film. Especially interesting was a segment on how these characters have gotten into popular culture and movies. The interview structure gets a little repetitive and perhaps could have been shorter, but there's a cumulative effect that creeped me out.

3 out of 5 stars.

2. The First Purge (2018) FTV
3. West Of Hell FTV

1. American Werewolf in London

Still good to see again (I had it saved in my PVR thingy)

2. Lake Placid with Bill Pullman and Bridget Fonda - about a giant crocodile

3. Repulsion (1965) with Catherine Deneuve - more like a psychological drama but has some horror moments in it.

4. Joy Ride - a trucker terrorizes three young people after being the victim of a practical joke.

5. The Hills Have Eyes - A suburban American family is being stalked by a group of psychotic people who live in the desert, far away from civilization. (Not the original from 1977).

6. Crazies on AMC (part of the Fear Fest) - remake of the 1973 film by George A. Romero

7. The Exorcist (the original one) - I remember seeing this at the theatre in a small town we lived in when I was still in high school. Read the book first so didn't jump a lot when the frightening scenes occurred.

8. Apt Pupil, based on the book by Stephen King (another one in my PVR) - my son's friend was shocked at the scene with the cat.

9. The Brave One with Jodie Foster - while not technically a horror film it has quite a bit of violence - this is a pretty good movie.

10. Natural Born Killers with Woody Harrelson and Juliette Lewis - wow - that was a very strange movie (not what I was expecting).

11. The Psycho She Met Online - this was like the Harlequin Romance version of a scary movie with perfect looking people etc. It was also filmed in Canada (probably for the tax breaks).

12. Good Neighbors - this one I liked - set in Quebec in the Notre Dame de Grace region about a murderer of young women. Sort of a whodunnit but with a good cast and good plot. Very quirky yet it kept you on your toes, wondering how it would end.

The above is my list from the Weekend Playground - I started late but might be able to catch up maybe since today is only the 19th!

Here is my list so far...
1. Mercy 2014 Based on SK's Gramma
Pretty decent, not much like the story but I liked it ok. FTV

2. House on Sorority Row 1983 seven sorority sisters drown their housemother, then meet the son she hid for 20 yrs. FTV Pretty cheesy.

3. Insidious: the Last Key 2018 Parapsychologist Elise Ranieri and her team travel to Five Keys, NM to investigate a claim of haunting in her childhood home. FTV I liked this one a lot.

4. Gone 2012 After escaping from an abductor a year earlier, a young woman sets out to save her sister, who has been kidnapped by the same serial killer. FTV
More suspense than horror, but it was a pretty ok movie.

5. Buffy the Vampire Slayer 1992 Valley girl Buffy departs from cheerleading to train with her recruiter for a vampire invasion. Watched this with my daughter. Kind of fun to revisit older movies with my kiddos.

6. It Stains the Sands Red 2016 during a zombie apocalypse, a Las Vegas woman becomes stranded in the desert with a ravenous zombie in pursuit. FTV
I did not have high hopes for this one but it was actually much better than I predicted. Not fabulous, but interesting. Little different take as the girl ends up almost dependent on the zombie.

7. Jeepers Creepers 3 a sergeant and his task force embark on a mission to destroy the creeper on its last day of feeding. FTV I know the controversy surrounding the director but the first Jeepers Creepers is among my favorite horror movies. I wanted to see this one to round out the trilogy. But it was super dumb.

8. Fright Night 1985 Another one I watched with my daughter, a classic and a favorite!

9. The Night Digger 1971 The last 30 minutes or so was pretty ok. But as a whole this movie was a bore fest. FTV

10. City of the Dead aka Horror House 1960 a professor sends a coed to a Massachusetts village where he and a witch lead the living dead. FTV
This one was great!

11. The Bye Bye Man 2017 a couple and their friend stumble upon the horrific origins of the bye bye man. FTV
Another one I expected to be super cheesy. But it was pretty scary in spots. Not bad at all.

12. No Escape Room 2018 a father and daughter check out a small town's escape room and discover something sinister about the place. Syfy FTV
I had very high hopes for this one. It started off great but very soon after was the typical Syfy original type cheesefest.

13. You Might Be the Killer syfy 2018 a camp counselor suffering from Memory loss finds himself in the middle of a horror movie massacre FTV
Another syfy original. It was a cheesefest as well, but this one was a fun cheesefest. Felt way too long by the end but a fun take on the away at camp type slashers like Friday the 13th and also The Final Girls with a dash of The Mask thrown in.

14. Deadly Friend 1986 a teenage whiz kid puts his robot's brain in the head of a nearly dead girl. FTV
Oh boy was this one dumb. Albert from Little House on the Prairie is in it and also the original Buffy.

15. The Thing From Another World 1951 Arctic soldiers and scientists find an alien aircraft containing a frozen creature that wakes and feeds on human blood. Classic old movie.

1) Ravenous (new - Netflix) - French-Canadian zombie film. Pretty decent, darkly comic in places. French (that isn't quite ;)) with English subs. 6.5/10
2) Resident Evil: The Final Chapter (new - Sky/Now TV) - the conclusion to the series of films based rather loosely on the series of games. 5/10
3) Fear The Walking Dead S3 eps 8 & 9 (new - APV)
4) The Thing (2011) (new - APV) - Decent if unnecessary prequel, though watched back to back with the 80s classic it works surprisingly well. 7/10
5) The Thing (1982)
6) Nightmares and Dreamscapes, eps The Road Virus Heads North & The Fifth Quarter
7) Fear The Walking Dead S3 eps 10 & 11 (new - APV)
8) The Limehouse Golem (new - Netflix) - Billed as a horror mystery, though IMO it had very little horror in it (some gore, but that's it). The mystery itself was OK, though, with some good performances from a pretty strong cast. 7/10
9) The Purge (new - APV) - uh-uh. 5.5/10
10) Fear The Walking Dead S3 eps 12 & 13 (new - APV)
11) Priest (new - Netflix) - Vampire capers with Paul Bettany, Karl Urban and Maggie Q. Nothing amazing, but watchable enough I suppose. 6/10
12) The Walking Dead S9 eps 1 & 2 (new - Fox/Now TV) - Something of a return to form, but probably too late to make a difference.
13) Get Out (new - Sky/Now TV) - Not entirely what I was expecting. Some great performances overcame my feeling that, in the same position, I'd have had my running shoes on long before the main events. Sometimes funny, often scary (in a thriller rather than horror sense) and always thought-provoking, I like it a lot. 9/10

14) Stephen King's Sleepwalkers - Not my first time, but hadn't seen it in ages.
15) Monsters - Again, not my first time. Features a wall that a certain president would appreciate. Not that it actually works, mind.
16) The Autopsy of Jane Doe (new - Netflix) - What it says. It's a proper creeper, too, though the autopsy scenes might be a bit too on-the-nose for some (definitely not something you want to watch while eating). 8/10

17. The Killing of a Sacred Deer (FTV)*

An enigmatic young man insinuates his way into a prominent surgeon's family in increasingly disturbing ways. Directed by Yorgos Lanthimos who directed 2016's outrageous The Lobster, you know this isn't going to be a straightforward thriller, but it tricks you into thinking it's going to be one for about the first hour or so. There's a very unsettling, almost antiseptic way the lines are delivered in deadpan manner, making the people sound very shallow small-talky, but the performances are so good we know there's something terrible lurking beneath the polite facade. As the primary antagonist, Barry Keoghan gives an incredible understated performance that had me thinking of Edward Norton's stunning debut in Primal Fear.

Things unravel a bit in the 3rd act as the plot becomes increasingly unrealistic and the responses of the characters become less and less credible. I don't want to spoil much here, but I'd have much preferred if things had been a little more realistic--I'm a fan of the supernatural, but the reasons for what's happening in this movie very much clashed with the reality that had been set up to that point. Still, this is one of those movies that gets under your skin, and despite the thriller marketing tag, it's every bit a horror movie.

21. The Sixth Sense

A boy with the gift (or curse) of seeing the dead all around him meets a child psychologist who wants to redeem himself. I watched this one with my 13-year-old daughter who knew nothing about it (although she was familiar with the quote "I see dead people" which has become part of our modern pop culture lexicon). She guessed the twist ending within the first 15 minutes without even knowing there was a twist ending...kids are too smart these days. Anyway she loved it, was scared by it, and was impressed (as was I) with Haley Joel Osment's outstanding performance, really the performance of a lifetime. I've seen this movie several times and while it can be enjoyed for its twist ending, or as a straightforward horror film, I am starting to see it more as an emotional film about people coping with loss, finding their purpose and ultimately moving on to the next stage of their lives.

I just KNOW there will be something gory - I've never seen this one before (from 2009) and I just saw the scene where he goes from a burlap bag on his head to finding his hockey mask. (I'm guessing this is the first one?) I always thought Friday the 13th was a much older movie.

Okay - just Googled - the first Friday the 13th was in 1980 :facepalm_smiley: - it confused me when they used the exact same title in this version.

The Killing of a Sacred Deer

This was an extremely odd movie. Starring Nicole Kidman, Colin Farrell minor role for Alicia Silverstone , it has these surreal qualities in the way it is filmed, the way the actors communicate with each other -- stiff and stilted and lacking emotion. Robotic, alien. Like they just came to this planet and now must learn how to be human. And they don't do it well. The family dynamic is off the charts sterile and fact based. Blunt, cold, and again, emotionless

The sex scenes between Colin and Nicole -- that's some weird sh*t right there when Nicole's character asks, "General anesthesia?" creepy. Nicole performing a certain act on another doctor for information. All very analytical, business-like, no embarrassment, no regrets. It must be done.

The kid at the center of all this does a fantastic acting job.

Based on the Greek play Iphigenia at Aulis by Euripides.

Just the opening scene lets you know, this ain't your typical film. Not by anything dramatic happening. It is the quality of the film, something about the film itself was different. And the angle of the camera and the conversation happening. Devoid of animation.

Definitely a think piece. As the movie progressed, it seemed I was a science project to it -- for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. For the very un-human-like things happening on the screen, I was giving a very human reaction. Almost trying to will these people to act "normal."

Did you just put that in there to see if we were paying attention?

13. Friday the 13th from 2009 - ewww - I got to a scene with a wood chipper and immediately thought of Moderator where I had to pause the movie. I just KNOW there will be something gory - I've never seen this one before (from 2009) and I just saw the scene where he goes from a burlap bag on his head to finding his hockey mask.

14. Eli Roth's History of Horror - I watched an episode called Slashers, Part One - they showed small segments with both Joe Hill and Stephen King commenting. (not a full length movie but I am going to count it anyway). I have Part Two set up to record tonight.

The Killing of a Sacred Deer
Based on the Greek play Iphigenia at Aulis by Euripides.

That's a fascinating bit! I had no idea! I'm not familiar with that Greek play but I'll have to check out a summary at least.

Some movies are "feel good movies". The Killing of a Sacred Deer seemed to be aspiring to be a "feel bad movie".
