I have that reaction when people tell me they read James Patterson. :)

Never had that. People either know and love him too, or they're not aware of who he is. It would really surprise me to meet someone who is judgemental about something like that. Maybe it's worse in America.

Maybe you can tell them he won the National Book Award and the National Medal of Arts. And give them something to read that's not directly horror (if they object to that) like Different Seasons, The Talisman, Eyes of the Dragon, or The Dark Tower series.
And they're probably not opposed to just Stephen King, they probably don't like horror in general.

I don't give two craps how they react. King has been a part of my life since I was just shy of twelve years old. Since 1984, there hasn't
been a single year that I don't have a SK book sitting on my desk (and now on my Kindle) to read. I love his work too much to care what other people think. There are seven billion of us on the planet: we can't all like the same thing, and that's perfectly alright with me.

I agree with you in terms of not caring what others think if i am enjoying the books or author. I was just curious because i did find it funny that i normally receive those reactions and was curious if other people received the same reactions

I have seen that many people here receive similar experiences to what i experience when i talk to others about Stephen King. I was thinking about it more after reading all your responses, many non-King readers probably look at me like i am crazier because he is known to have some "horror" style books and known as the modern master of "horror". But also because some of his most well known movies like The Shining, IT, Misery, etc are pretty crazy for their eye but i have told people how he is more suspenseful in his writings and not just super craziness and many are surprised when i tell them he wrote Shawshank Redemption or the Green Mile as someone else posted.

I just find these things interesting and enjoy talking about it

(At the library)
Patron to me: You are reading Stephen King? (wrinkles nose)
Me to patron: Yep. Is that a copy of Fifty Shades of Gray you're holding?
:p

After all these years people still think I'm a whack job. I'm the one in the family who likes that "weird guy". They walk into my house and one of the first things they see is my bookcase full of King novels. I have no problem with their reaction or opinion. I read all kinds of books. Just finished HG Wells The Time Machine. So basically I don't let it get to me. Just smile and go back to your book.
