    Penny Dreadful

The new "Penny Dreadful - City of Angels" is a disappointment. They should have dropped the "Penny" and just called it "Dreadful." Really bad. A low budget effort. The writing is terrible. It reminds me a lot of season two of The Terror. Penny Awful. I'm still watching though.

    What did you think?

It always a great feeling to crack open a new King book. Particularly on a nice Spring day. None of us are getting any younger so who is say when that will be the last time? I've read the first three stories. A couple thoughts.

    Current events

Dark Advent is an overlooked apocalyptic novel by Brian Hodge. Swan Song by McCammon is a good one as well. Probably the closet thing to The Stand in terms of scope and quality.

    Current events

The Stand is an epic but one of the few King books that I don't think has held up well over the years. One of the most effective parts of the book, though, is early on when awareness of the severity of the situation starts to arise. That slow burn that comes as the characters begin to realize...

    Robert Rick McCammon

McCammon signed my three copies of the various "Greystone Bay" books, Queen of Bedlam, and Gone South at ChattaCon. Quite a haul. I have a soft spot for those Greystone Bay anthologies. It would be great if someone resurrected them. QofB completes my set of signed Corbett books. That was...

    Robert Rick McCammon

McCammon is going to be at the Alabama Booksmith this month. You can order signed copies of his book "The Hunter from the Woods" even if you can't attend: https://www.alabamabooksmith.com/signed-copies/hunter-woods

    "Institute" sales

I read somewhere that "bestseller" lists like that of the NY Times are not based on sales. They are just books that someone decides are the most popular that week. It's a bit misleading although self-perpetuating since the books that are placed on the "bestseller" list are likely to sell more...

    HBO -- Sunday

I thought it was well done. One of those rare instances where the TV version is as good or better than the book. The first episode jumped around a bit and it was sometimes hard to follow whether they were showing pre or post murder events. Also that annoying muting of the dialogue for...

    IT Chapter 3

Chapter 3 would more likely be a prequel. There are a several historical backstories in IT for Pennywise and Derry. Any number of possibilities there or even an entirely new story that the filmmakers could come up with. More likely that a chapter 3 would be in a movie rather than book form in...

    Latest Movie That You Watched!

Super Dark Times. A sort of Donnie Darko type film. Great acting from a young cast who actually look and act like kids from the pre-Internet days. A lot of people disliked the ending but a solid film. Available on Netflix.

If It Bleeds - all Holly Gibney stories?

A better title would have been "Let it Bleed" with a tip of the hat to Mick and the boys. This is the kind of free advice you get on the Internet! Some stories with Stones titles like "Dead Flowers" or "You Got the Silver." King would knock those out.

Stephen and Joe at Porter Square Books in Cambridge

This has been beat to death on another forum but the most disappointing aspect of how it was handled is that some of us did purchase deluxe tickets after spending hours online only to be told days later that they had oversold the event and our tickets were no longer valid. And then I learned...

What Are You Reading? Part Deux

Shirley Jackson's "We Have Always Lived in the Castle." A book that has always been overshadowed by Hill House. The recent movie version peaked my interest. It's a typical Jackson story. Well written, creepy, with some dark humor.

    Cemetery Dance Edition

I got my copy signed by Danny Lloyd, the Grady twins, and the women in room 237 from the movie. Interestingly, Lloyd said he had never met King. Or at least he could not recollect having ever met him. He said King may have been on the set of the movie once but he was too young to remember it.

    Latest Movie That You Watched!

"We Have Always Lived in the Castle" based upon Shirley Jackson's book. Starring Taissa Farmiga of American Horror Story. Nicely done but just doesn't quite work. I give it a C+ for effort. Has it's creepy moments.

    Sid Haig

Old SId was in something like 70 movies. If you like horror movies, he was a hoot as Capt. Spaudling. He was a cool cat. https://ew.com/movies/2019/09/23/sid-haig-dies-house-of-1000-corpses/

    Daniel Johnston

The cult singer/songwriter. Subject of a great documentary "The Devil and Daniel Johnston." Suffered from various mental illness but was an inspiration to many other artists including Bowie and Cobain. Only 58. Some really great songs if you have never heard of him (some really awful ones...

    Sid Haig

The great character actor aka Captain Spaulding from Rob Zombie's "House of 1000 Corpses." Met him a couple of times at various horror conventions.

My little review of The Institute.

I had the same impression. There are obvious elements of Firestarter, Dr. Sleep, The Shining and even IT. Overall it was like reading a book someone else might have written to imitate a Stephen King novel. None of the characters resonated. I thought the beginning was the most interesting...
