Hi everyone. I just got done with SK's 11/22/63 and loved it. Great combination of historical events and character developments. I really enjoyed the end and how SK wrapped up the story. My question:

Hypothetically, after the song finishes and 80 year old Sadie and 45 year old Jake stop dancing to "In the mood", where do they go from there? From immediately afterwards to a possible relationship. My theories:

1). Jake says thank you for the dance and slips into the night. I don't think this is realistic because Sadie partly remembers him and he has too much invested in his feelings for her. I don't think this is an option.

2). Jake and Sadie rekindle their love and become a couple again. I don't think this is an option either because Sadie remembers Jake faintly but not good enough to start a romantic relationship this late in her life with a middle age man. Plus what would the neighbors really think now?

3). I think the most realistic relationship would be a solid friendship that consist of non-intimate relationship (they both realize that ship has sailed). Kinda a Sunday afternoon to talk and discuss their common bond. Jake would have to tip toe very carefully how he presented to Sadie on their previous relationship.

I hated to see this book end but thoroughly enjoyed it. Thoughts?

Spideyman, I did see the alternate endings and the book version is 10x better. The alternate ending was too predictable and bland. The book's version made you desperate for more information. Nice job SK.

How much will Sadie remember of Jake? How much will Jake push her to remember him? How far can this relationship go? This ending reminded so much of the end of Shawshank where Red and Andy meet up and you want to be a fly on the beach listening to them reuniting.

As Seinfeld says, "Keep them wanting more" is the way to go out....

Yeah, I guess the electric slide might change the ending a bit.

Like I said before, the ending is great but I would love to know how the characters would have reacted after the last page or two of developments. It has made me ponder.....

I think Jake would have chatted with her a bit that night, but I don't think he would have explained that they knew each other in an alternate timeline. It would have been too much. Sadie did have a feeling that she knew Jake, but it was nothing more than that. I think Jake would have left and not spoken to her again because having a romantic relationship would not have made sense and explaining the whole situation would have been too much.

Thanks Tyrion (best character on game of thrones, btw).

I see your reasoning but I still think they would have a deeper conversation than what you think. He told Sadie that he knew her from a previous life. That comment would need a little lying to get around. Plus, I think Jake wants to restart some dialogue with her to rekindle some love. Hell, he drove from MA and doesn't have a job so what does he have to lose? He is a good bs'er. Plus he heard the meals were pretty good at Sadie's nursing home

Thanks for responding to this post. The possibilities of this end is driving me nuts.

Jake did say that he knew her from another life, but he was pretty vague about it. It's open to interpretation. Personally, I think Jake had an itch to go see Sadie just to see what she was like, but I doubt he would have explained to her what had happened between them. It would be too much to explain and given the age difference, it wouldn't make a difference anyways. Maybe they become friends and keep in touch, but given how heartbroken Jake was, I think he would stop talking to her and put what happened between them behind.

Tyrion, thanks for your response. You make some excellent points. I guess we'll have to agree to disagree slightly because I still think they would have more of a serious, non-intimate relationship than your suggestion. I think Jake would realize the hurdles he has to rekindle their relationship but what does he have to lose? He would build Sadie's trust slowly. In reference to her, I think she looks at him like a dream that she just can't put a finger on. As long as jake plays it smooth, she would just be too curious not to explore a friendship. If she believed he was from the future in 1950's, why couldn't she believe the "another life" theory in present day?

Either way, it's cool to discuss the possibilities. Thanks for your response. Brooks

Hello to all.
I have just finished 11.22.63 minutes ago, 18.15 GMT to be precise. Finally I know why SK does not take "ideas" from people. It would be like dropping a fire cracker into the Sun. This is the first novel on time travel that took me back in time with the traveler. It is an incredibly complex plot but it never even comes close to unraveling. I thought it Gothic in parts, Dickensian in others. I could almost smell the cigarette smoke and taste the root beer. I have no idea how SK does it but I sure am glad that he does.

Damocles, totally agree and that's why I started this thread. Something about this book just made me stop in my boots. Can't wait for Hulu miniseries.

As far as SK, did you read the alternate ending posted above? That was the original ending until SK's son suggested a different scenario. Credit to SK to listen to another opinion and make his book better. IMHO

I agree. I think for Sadie it was like a feeling of deja vu that we all have sometimes, but can't explain. They both knew, but only Jake really knew, and I don't think he would have been successful if he had continued trying to capture something more between them. A very bittersweet and wonderful ending, much better than the original alternate one.

Root beer - it is a pop or soda (not really a beer which has alcohol in it!)

I found the ending to The Time Travelers Wife (book ending, not film. The film ending disappointing) very similar. Won't go into details, just incase you haven't read it.

Also the end of the film Interstellar is similar (except it's the main character's daughter). Again won't go into details, just in case you haven't seen it.
