Jake told himself not to do a lot of things with regard to Sadie, and he never could make good on those things because, well love makes you do things from the heart not the head. He tried his hardest to stay away from her in 2012 and couldn't. I find it hard to believe no matter how hard he tries not to, that Jake won't end up back the Rabbit hole one more time....

If he had met her in 2012 and there was zero spark then maybe, but after that dance

Welcome Misery! Totally agree with your post. When I started this thread, that was my general feeling and I still feel that way 1 year after reading book. Jake has too many feelings for Sadie to never talk to her again. Love conquers time travel ;)
Can't wait for Hulu miniseries in February!

Um, has anybody noticed what great love stories Mr. King writes?

Yes.

I have only finished this in the last couple of days and can't stop thinking about Sadie and Jake. What happened next?
I really hope they became friends again. After all they went through they deserve at least that.
Does Jake tell her more detail? I don't know. Perhaps he could go to where he buried his manuscript and give it to her to read. It must have been dug up at some point because we have their story. I think Jake may even move in nearby, take a teaching job or write his novel, occasional and ever increasing visits to Sadie, birthday and Christmas cards... slowly and gently does it. I do hope the dance continues. After all things don't change back exactly as they were, and somewhere in time, Jake remembers while Sadie dreams...

This is where I am at too. He had always tried to avoid doing certain things but couldn't due to his love for her. I believe the spark would no doubt reignite the fire that he (incorrectly) thought he could put out. He had seen too much, been away too long, and even mentioned himself that the "present day" never felt like that. His true home was in Jodie, Texas with his honey. I believe if the book would've continued, he'd go back in time for Sadie. He wouldn't interfere in the past the way he had due to the obdurate past, but he would go back for his true love. At least, this is how I always felt.

In addition, he mentioned he wasn't sure he believed in God, so he wouldn't be counting on seeing her in the after life, which would only strengthen his desire to spend the rest of his days with Sadie in the time period he fit in best.

About twice a year, I reread the last chapter. I was at the library today searching for my next SK choice and decided to take another glance at this book. After finishing the story again, I always say to myself, I just want to find another book that ends so well but still wanting so much more. Man, what a book!!

That will be tough to do, let me know if/when you find that book!

They ate poundcake. Sweet, dirty poundcake.

I tried not to think about it, to just let it stop at the spot where Mr. King (with Joe on the assist) left us and let the moment freeze in time like the end of a CHiPs episode. I couldn't help but think about it though, book's just too good not to dwell on. I just assumed he went there to get a little closure, that seeing her alive and well (not just in an internet search) was something he needed to do after the events of 11/22/63. He needed a new/happier memory to replace that one and to see that she was happy. I took the list of her achievements in public service and charity as a lesson that changing the path of her life was no better than trying to change Kennedy's. She had found a calling and it probably wasn't coincidence that the event Jake had tried to stop was the very same one which inspired her into public service. Simply learning that she lived through Clayton and the aftermath wouldn't have been enough to make him feel better about staying out of her life, but I like to think that seeing she had a higher purpose in life convinced him not to mess with the past just as effectively as a trip to the Province of Maine. I guess the question is whether or not involving himself with her now, whether it be in a relationship or a friendship, is any better than messing with her life inside the rabbit hole. Just because he's back in his present doesn't mean his actions have no impact on the future he doesn't know about yet. With that in my mind I liked the idea of Jake walking off into the sunset after one last dance, knowing he did and was doing the right thing. And with that peace of mind he can maybe move on with his life and find a new dance partner.

Wow, I just finished reading this book but it,s way after most of you guys. But I will throw this to the cosmos anyway. Why do most of you feel it would be impossible for jake and Sadie to rekindle their romance?! For jake, their love affair took only a small interval, although it was decades longer for Sadie. How many of you would give your eye teeth to hold and cherish and see alive a loved one after their death? Sadie is alive! Why should jake care if she is a few decades older? Smacks of female ageism; after all, how many elderly men keep turning in their wives for newer models until at the end some men have wives their granddaughter's age! Why shouldn,t they continue loving one another? They shouldn,t merely because Sadie,s older? Doesn,t make sense to me. Their love transcended time, why not age span? Also, why would SK have both Sadie and jake be unattached? Please, I,m sure many of you are past 50 years of age. Don,t you still feel desire and love? Let,s allow Sadie and jake share a few more lovely years together!

But now it,s not just his present, it,s her,s as well. Their love transcended time, no reason it can,t flourish in real time. And while it might be difficult for a 40 yo and an 80 yo to develop a new relationship, their love has already proven it can conquer many hurdles. Plus, many people in this thread must think sex and passion is impossible for older folks. Not true!

Tyrion, thanks for your response. You make some excellent points. I guess we'll have to agree to disagree slightly because I still think they would have more of a serious, non-intimate relationship than your suggestion. I think Jake would realize the hurdles he has to rekindle their relationship but what does he have to lose? He would build Sadie's trust slowly. In reference to her, I think she looks at him like a dream that she just can't put a finger on. As long as jake plays it smooth, she would just be too curious not to explore a friendship. If she believed he was from the future in 1950's, why couldn't she believe the "another life" theory in present day?

Either way, it's cool to discuss the possibilities. Thanks for your response. Brooks
I agree with you overall that Sadie and jake have nothing to lose by reigniting their relationship. After all, they are both single and they have passionately loved one another. I,m just disappointed that you think their only option is a serious, non intimate relationship. Why? I,m hoping it,s not bc Sadie is 80 and jake is fortyish bc there are plenty of elderly (usually rich) men who have wives half their age. Would you turn away from someone you loved if you had a second chance? For myself, I believe Sadie and jake dance into the sunset....

How old was Jake?

Sadie was at a stage in her life where she would most likely not be interested in Jake;

I think the age difference would be too great

I still don't think physical intimacy is the major hurdle for this couple. It's the fact they met in a "paralleling universe" is the problem. I'll set the scene:

After the dance, Sadie and Jake head back to her house and start to get intimate. Soon later....Sadie is laying in bed with a freshly lit cigarette in her mouth, breathing heavily "Wow, you are quite a machine in bed, Jim, no Jake? And how did we know each other again?"

"You too Sadie. Just like I remember although you probably don't. See we met in a parallel universe where I was trying to save JFK from assassination. I met you back in the 1960's and we were a hot couple. Then you were killed in the assasination attempt so I went back to the real world. But it was a mess like radiation everywhere. So I went back to 1958 to reverse my tracks from coming the first time. I swear I was going to look you up but remember what happened the first time? So I came back to present and looked you up in real time (well a few years later) and here I am. So, you got any food in fridge?

Cue the cricket noise and tumbleweed stage right....

Sadie "yeah, I think you have to leave, Jack. I think I have bridge tonight."

The End

How do you rekindle the love in a different time, location and universe. Love is so much more than physicality. It's the right setting, timing and connection. I think this love affair can't be rekindled and they have to enjoy it for what it was. I love the conversation.
