Both movies have their strengths and weakness.

I found the mother/daughter relationship more compelling in the remake.

Where the original rules is once Carrie unleashes her powers at the Prom. DePalma knew how to stage action shots. Kimberly Peirce does not.

DePalma, despite the more primitive SFX of the time, did some amazing, scary stuff. Peirce's shots lack the same impact as DePalma's. DePalma's use of the Psycho inspired violin riff was inspired.

Also preferred how Spacek use of powers was conveyed mostly through her eyes whereas Moretz's Evil Return Of The Jedi Emporer's hand waving was a distractingly bad choice.

Just saw Sissy Space-ICK on an old SNL, circa 1977 or thereabouts, and she wasn't creepy at all. Quite the contrary--grrr, Muskie like! She twirled a baton like nobody's business, and held her own with Belushi.

But she'll always be Carrie to me. That look is frakin iconic--pigs blood, tiara, cold, spaced-out killers eyes--as recognizable as Coca Cola and Mickey Mouse. They can re-make this one a million times, but in the centuries to come, it will always be Sissy they see.

I had to look that up. I knew I had seen that before. :grinning:

I love the original it is one of my favorite horror movies of all time. I saw the remake once and it was ok. Need to watch it a few more times to really decide plus I watched it soon after watching the original for like the 100th time so I guess that didn't help in giving the remake a real shot.

My first viewing of the original Carrie was in bits because I was a pre-modern-horror-movie fan, which includes that I had no idea who Brian De Palma is, and a similar amount per sK. I was used to, and biased toward, other types of movies. I assumed Carrie was cheese. Later, once I realized how much I enjoy De Palma's horror style via Dressed to Kill and Body Double, I saw Carrie for the first time, as it were; I saw how really good it is. (I still had not read the novel.)

I like the recent Carrie a lot, mostly due to my love of great visual effects, and also because I feel Moretz is very good in the role, despite being a long way from the essential grotesque described in the novel and much better realized in the original. I agree with whomever posted above per Sue Snell that secondary characters also aren't realized as well. But I really like the prom scene better for visual effects and their conveyance of Carrie's perverse supernatural power, and I like better how the Snell character pays for her evil selfishness.

I first saw the original when I was a teenager and I first saw the remake with my teenage daughter.
Both are good films. Like seine else mentioned, the prom clay was much better done in the original. It felt real.
The roles of Carrie and her mother were so well portrayed in both films.
I felt more sympathy for Carrie in the remake, but mainly because the shower scene was broadcast all over the internet. That's one of the scariest things a teenage girl (and mom of teenage girl) can imagine.

I liked the the recent one. I think they should have gone more over the top, though. Make the mother a real psycho. I thought it was pretty good. If they make a Dark Tower movie I don't think they should use either Hugh Jackman or Russell Crowe. Crowe is too old and Jackman doesn't come across as being tough enough. I think they should use an American actor. Get some guy just released from prison.

Im a fan of both movies...but I have to say that the original is a bit darker and frightening....Sissy Spacek plays the role more realistic than Chloe Moretz...shes more of a loner in the original....the mother in the original is more bible crazy than the remake but I still like Julian Moore in the remake....the closet scene in the original is more frightening...the crucifix with the Jesus eyes glowing in the closet is really creepy in the original...the ending scene in the original when carries hand comes out of the grave and grabs Sue, that is so scarey and is much better than the remakes ending

I have been putting off watching the remake as I have already said....mostly due to the actress they chose to play Carrie White based on what I saw in the previews , as I was afraid that it wouldn't ring true at all (nothing against the actress or her abilities mind you, just on a surface level). Well it is on TV tonight so I decided to at least give it a shot. Sad to say that I am 5 minutes in and it's just as I feared.

My problem with it is emphasized in the very first scene in the movie that introduces the teenage characters. The camera pans over and passes the "popular, bitchy girls" who are going to make Carrie's life a living hell....then it pans over to our lovable loser Carrie White....who is not only gorgeous, but if fact is far prettier than every one of her would be tormentors. I mean come on....I'm supposed to believe that this girl is an ostracized loner? Sorry, I just can't buy it. I'm going to stick it out and watch the rest of the movie, but emotionally I've already checked out as far as getting into the story because it isn't at all a realistic scenario. Sissy Spacek was perfect because she started out looking awkward and very plain and ended up at the prom looking beautiful.....it was that transformation that packed the emotional punch and made what happened to her all the more horrible. I will say that I like the choice of Juliette Lewis as Margaret was an inspired one.

Exactly what I feared. Exactly what I found.

But I liked Tommy Ross and Sue Snell from this latest version, so not everything was a loss.

Ok I find it only fair that considering my criticism of the character choice based only on the first 5 minutes that I had seen, to give an actual review after having watched the whole movie. I finally saw the whole thing today and I must say that I found the actress that played Carrie to be much more pitiful and sympathetic that I had thought based on the previews and the opening scene. I also enjoyed the movie much more than I had original thought I would. I loved Sissy Spacek so much in the original that I was judging the character very harshly based on her.

I was pretty faithful to the novel with some modern day twists added in, which didn't bother me. Gotta admit that the Prom destruction scene was pretty freaking killer. I was a pretty solid adaption. I revoke most of my previous criticisms lol.

I liked the remake better because I'm a huge fan of Chloe Grace Moretz. (So is Stephen King.) I always thought that Sissy Spacek was too old for the part. She was pushing 30 when the original movie was filmed. I'm no spring chicken either.

Recently I watched the 2013 remake for the first time, and I must admit, it was good! Special Effects were great, most of the acting was good, and they added things to update this SK Milestone!
As for the '76 original, I saw part of it on TV immediately after I finished watching the 2013 one (IT'S A SIGN!!!), and prefer the remake. What are your thoughts?

I thought I was alone in preferring the remake. In fact, despite social media and the other modern day updates, the basic plot is actually more faithful to the book than the original - it even had the teaser with the news audio over the whole town in flames.

Yes
The original has the edge for me, although I thought Julianne Moore (who I don't normally like) did very well to make Margaret White sympathetic as well as loopy.

Yes me too, the remake did a better job of explaining her powers, aap d had a few scenes that where in the book that did not make it into the original movie. That being said I prefer the original. The new one is good for teens of today. One look at the original and they will be like what is this soft core porn movie.
