Okay, time to recognize the sheer amount of participation we had this year (and this was one of the best, I believe), here are the totals I have, using the best available posting information on the thread.

Please correct me if I'm wrong on any of these, and please don't take it personally if I accidentally left anyone out! It was tough to keep track of everyone. And for some people, I don't have a clear number or wasn't sure if they were participating, but they were posting here about movies they watched so I included them!

So in all, we had at least a solid 586 movies in all watched! Assuming an average running time of 100 minutes, that represents 58,600 minutes of viewing time which represents nearly 41 solid days of horror movies being viewed!

Special congrats to morgan who watched a staggering 70 movies, or nearly 5 solid days in October watching movies! Hope you have a comfortable movie watching seat!

Now I just need to work on my "best of" lists...if you feel like joining, here are some of the categories I have used in prior years (feel free to add your own!)

Objection, yo' honuh! Some of Morgan's should be re-listed as one thing, e.g. American Horror Story: Roanoke. :D

(Either way, that is some serious dedication to TV!)
Several years ago, someone asked if 2 episodes of a TV show could count as 1 listing (if program was around 45 minutes - since 1 1/2 hours is fairly standard for a movie). It was approved, so that's why I listed them the way I did. I would never make up my own rules. :)

Hey, I think anything we watch during the marathon counts. Halloween is many things to many people. Great list, Morgan!

How did any of us get anything done this month? ;-D This year's challenge seemed to be the most active that I can remember.

13) The Devil's Rejects: I'm not really a fan but it happened to be on and I figured since I had just watched House of 1,000 Corpses, I should try this one again. I don't care how Roger Ebert rated it, this is an ugly film. At least its predecessor has an element of fun to it. This one is satisfied to just be revolting. Is it better made from a technical aspect? Yes, I'll concede on that. I assume Rob Zombie is going for a Last House on the Left kind of experience here, but jeez. The movie is a joyless experience. 4/10 as at least the cast is solid.

I didn't rate, but I'd go 2/10. You bagged it daddy-o, "ugly film". And "joyless". Are you the ghost of Judith Crist?

LOL - Not quite. it's one of those movies I really wanted to like too, because I find the first one to be cheesy fun. I like the whole gritty & grainy thing when it's done well, but The Devil's Rejects leans too far over its skis into the realm of sadistic violence just for the sake of well, sadistic violence. Compare it with something like Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer - which is about as horrifying of a film that I've seen. It's also ugly and sadistic, but there's a difference in tone that makes it more...I'm struggling with the right words here...tolerable? artistic? I guess that's the difference between putting the material in the hands of a John McNaughton vs. Rob Zombie.

Now that I think about it, I was off from October 1st to 15th, back to work on the 16th but not full time, then another period of time off starting on October 28th.

Unfortunately, once I go back to work on November 7th I will have used up all my vacation days for the 2016/2017 year :cry_pig: - it sucks when you move to a new job and the new boss can only give you the times nobody else wanted.

If I'm still there when we all get to make our vacation selections in the new year, maybe I'll get some better choices!

I definitely need to get some time off in July 2018 for the King Kon!

This is probably too much information and might not actually be pertinent to this thread but I should hear back soon from the Health Employees Benefits Plan regarding whether or not I can collect an unreduced pension at age 60 - it will be interesting to calculate how much that might be!

Maybe I'll end up like danie - become a young(ish) retiree!

Below is my final list of the season, although I had many others recorded to watch. Just couldn't get to them in time.

I'm actually pretty proud of this list. I had 41 movies. 22 of which were NEW watches.

My list was pretty eclectic I think, including a silent movie, 2 foreign films with subtitles, a ghostly radio recording, animated renderings, old and new movies, black and white and color. Plus other foreign movies that did not require subtitles but did require that I turn on closed caption because their accents were tough to interpret sometimes.

So, without further ado:

Most welcome return -- I'm going to loosely interpret what you mean here. The most welcome return for me was Dr. Phibes in The Abominable Dr. Phibes. They all thought he was dead. He wasn't.

Best foreign film -- Vault of Horror. Hey. I love this anthology. But, for a newer feel, I would go with The Hallow. It's not that it was all that great, but I loved the Irish settings, and I thought the lead man did a fantastic acting job.

Funniest -- Yikes. Not sure any of mine were all that funny, but maybe Splatter with Corey Feldman. It wasn't funny, but he tried to be. Fail, Corey.

Most fun -- Westworld. I just liked the premise of a theme park. You're supposed to have fun at a theme park, right?

Scariest -- So many to choose from for many different types of scares. I'm going to go with Funhouse. And the reason why is because this goes back to my teenage days seeing this at a Drive-in. That drooly funhouse guy scared me bad, or good.

Goriest/Grossest -- I had a few that could easily be in this category for image after image of gore. But, I am going to go with ONE visual in a movie because it was so chilling. Gerald's Game.

Best discovery of an old film -- Destiny. The silent movie I watched was just cool. To see the dawn of film, special effects, overacting, interesting visuals -- I'm glad I watched it.

Best bad film -- Sheesh, I don't know. The Plague of Zombies -- it had cool drums.

Ones to avoid -- Comforting Skin. I ended up horrified just because I sat and watched it.

Best new movie -- 1922. Loved it.

Best overall -- The Innocents with Deborah Kerr. This is old-time Gothic, black and white, great kid acting. Back to the roots of what a good scare should be.

Honorable Mentions --

Any anthology done in any format is bound to have some good entries. Especially if they are Hammer or Amicus. And although I complained about the CUBE series, taken as a whole thing, they were pretty interesting. The horror of Math is very real. hahaha!

Most welcome return - Thinner - especially now that I've seen Pennywise's face in the blood on the windshield

Best foreign film - Spring - filmed in Italy and very good atmosphere

Funniest - American Werewolf in London

Most fun - Dark Shadows 2012

Scariest - Hmmm - none were all that scary

Best overall - apart from a bad ending, I like Spring

Honorable Mentions - It's too late to add it in my list, but that movie called Split was very well done - good acting by the main character.

I finally put together a little list of "best of" categories for this year's list of films. This was a tough year because I watched a lot of "pretty good, not great" films, and also several were repeat views which are harder to categorize. Anyway, here's my list:

Best ultra-low budget horror: I Didn't Come Here To Die/Inbred (tie)
Best Foreign: Train To Busan/Goodnight Mommy (tie)
Most Disturbing: Grotesque
Best Discovery of an older film: The Stuff/It's Alive (tie)
Best looking film: A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night
Best Adaptation of a story/book: The Girl With All The Gifts
Best Gross-Out film: Raw
Biggest disappointment: It Comes At Night
Least Necessary Sequel: Rings
Most Scares, also Best Sequel: Annabelle: Creation
Funniest: The Final Girls/Dead & Breakfast (tie)
Best Retro Style: The Void
Most Likely to Re-watch Annually: Tales of Halloween

All in all a great month!

I think we're going to see Happy Death Day this weekend. I'm pretty excited to see how well the Groundhog Day platform works for horror.

I liked it!!! I saw Happy Death Day tonite with some coworkers after a short employee Christmas party. From one of my several jobs. :) Most of the celebrants were going to see Thor!

giphy.gif

Too early? Yeah I know! The party sucked. A half dozen Little Cesar's $5 pizzas and some 2 iitre colas don't say "We appreciate all you do here all year long" emphatically enough for me! But the movie was pretty good! It was scary, fun, and humorous without going into 'scary movie' territory. The cast was great. Especially the lead actress. I just googled her. She's 30! Jezus. Why does every female under 35 looks 19 to me now?! She's very good though. Anyway, someone squeezed in pretty close to me at the movie, I think I've got an admirer. One that smells nice. :eyebrow: Finally! I haven't kept my weight down this long just so I can admire myself getting in & out of the shower. I do it, but that's not why I do it.

Dana Jean has it right. The 2 eps of TV = 1 movie thing makes sense (though that being the case, I should have about 7/8 added to my final tally thanks to Stranger Things and ST2 ;)). Like I said before, though, that final tally shows impressive dedication!
