16. Hocus Pocus 1993 A must watch for me every year.

17. Strangers on a Train 1951 FTV A psychopath and a tennis player meet in a club car and plot that each will murder someone for the other.
This was more drama/suspense but I thought it was excellent.

18. Misery
19. Thinner
20. Silver Bullet
21. Christine
Caught the marathon last weekend on AMC.

22. The Exorcist
First time watching this one since I was in high school. Never will be a favorite of mine, hubby wanted to watch it though.

23. Halloween H2O 1998
My favorite of all the sequels.

24. Sweeney Todd The Demon Barber of Fleet Street 2007
I have seen this before but prefer the one with Angela Lansbury. I have a hard time understanding Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter, both in the dialogue and the songs, which makes it a chore to try to decifer.

25. The Canterville Ghost 1944 a GI billets in a relative's castle, haunted by a 300 year old ghost.
I was very much looking forward to this one, since we just read the story in group. And it did not disappoint, even though the story is changed. Instead of a family moving in, the castle is hosting US soldiers in the middle of WWII. But I liked it very much. It made me chuckle and the cast was great.

26. Friday the 13th 2009
I am pretty sure this was FTV for me. It did not ring any bells as I was watching it. But, it was not very good, either. So may have just forgotten it.

27. Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde 1941 gentle Dr Jekyll tests a serum on himself, releasing vicious alter ego Mr Hyde on 19th century London
Spencer Tracy in the title role. I was a little surprised at the sexual overtone throughout the whole movie. Taped it off if TCM, and in the little intro they always do, they said the sexual stuff was even toned down from the original script. But it sure stuck out to me. It was ok, but it felt more like a romance movie than horror.

28. The Ghost and Mr Chicken 1966
Another old favorite. Don Knotts is hilarious.

29. The Belko Experiment 2016 Trapped inside their office building, 80 employees must play a sadistic game of survival that requires them to kill a certain number of co workers.
Blech. This one was very gory and it is not one I will ever watch again. Friends and co workers turn into killers to survive, just too violent.

27. Suspiria (1977)

An American newcomer to a prestigious European dance academy discovers that the place may in fact be a cover for a coven of witches. If director Dario Argento had done nothing else other than Suspiria, he'd still be a legend. Not only is every scene beautiful, the scares are effective, continuous, and varied. There's a great sense of mystery and tension that never lets up, and the climactic final scene is terrifying.

Argento's use of primary colors has never been more perfectly demonstrated than in this film, which is one of the very last filmed in Technicolor. It all just leaps from the screen like fireworks.

On top of that you have the excellent musical score from a band called Goblin. It's a perfect compliment to what's going on on the screen, but the chilling main theme is like a character in and of itself.

Actress Jessica Harper is hard to not watch, her eyes have a continuous haunted look, even when nothing scary is going on. There are so many great secondary characters, particularly the witches and their assistants, who can creep you out with a glance.

In my opinion, this is one of the top horror films ever made, taking its place alongside the modern classics like The Shining. The new Synapse Films Blu-ray is absolutely stunning, worth the upgrade if you're on the fence.

5 out of 5 stars.

26. Phantasm

Two brothers investigate a mysterious mortuary where the bodies are disappearing, and clash with the Tall Man (and his minions) who's behind it all. Proof that a small independent film with a low budget can still become a horror classic. I love the strangeness of this movie, the unpredictability, and the way that the plot just keeps moving ahead. Yeah, it's pretty dated, but this was 1979 so give it some leeway. So many iconic moments, especially the Tall Man (Angus Scrimm), the weaponized silver ball that is never explained (at least in this first installment), and of course that crazy scene near the end in that white room. This is becoming one of my most re-watched horror films of all time, and it's always a treat to introduce it to someone who has never seen it before. Bob says check it out!

1. American Werewolf in London

Still good to see again (I had it saved in my PVR thingy)

2. Lake Placid with Bill Pullman and Bridget Fonda - about a giant crocodile

3. Repulsion (1965) with Catherine Deneuve - more like a psychological drama but has some horror moments in it.

4. Joy Ride - a trucker terrorizes three young people after being the victim of a practical joke.

5. The Hills Have Eyes - A suburban American family is being stalked by a group of psychotic people who live in the desert, far away from civilization. (Not the original from 1977).

6. Crazies on AMC (part of the Fear Fest) - remake of the 1973 film by George A. Romero

7. The Exorcist (the original one) - I remember seeing this at the theatre in a small town we lived in when I was still in high school. Read the book first so didn't jump a lot when the frightening scenes occurred.

8. Apt Pupil, based on the book by Stephen King (another one in my PVR) - my son's friend was shocked at the scene with the cat.

9. The Brave One with Jodie Foster - while not technically a horror film it has quite a bit of violence - this is a pretty good movie.

10. Natural Born Killers with Woody Harrelson and Juliette Lewis - wow - that was a very strange movie (not what I was expecting).

11. The Psycho She Met Online - this was like the Harlequin Romance version of a scary movie with perfect looking people etc. It was also filmed in Canada (probably for the tax breaks).

12. Good Neighbors - this one I liked - set in Quebec in the Notre Dame de Grace region about a murderer of young women. Sort of a whodunnit but with a good cast and good plot. Very quirky yet it kept you on your toes, wondering how it would end.

13. Secret Window - Johnny Depp was eating an awful lot of Doritos plus I was surprised at how young Mario Bello looked. Pretty good film - a bit of gore near the end but mostly psychological.

14. White Zombie from 1932 with Bela Lugosi (on Turner Classic Movie channel).

15. The Mark of the Vampire with Bela Lugosi (again) - this was pretty good with a surprise ending. (1935)

16. Eli Roth's History of Horror (parts 1 & 2) - not technically a full length movie but a good documentary with cameos by Stephen King and son Joe Hill.

17. Viral - pretty gory with lots of blood - ewww - a story of some teenagers who are stranded in a house after a viral outbreak of a disease that makes people into semi-zombies (sort of).

18. A Christmas Horror Story with William Shatner - I enjoyed this one - so much over-the-top blood letting - I was mostly laughing rather than cringing throughout.

19. Dark Shadows with Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer and Helena Bonham Carter - this was a fun movie with a few good laughs as well as a performance by Alice Cooper.

I had to edit - with all my copying and pasting between this forum and the Weekend Playground, I somehow missed one!

38 . Spirit of the Beehive -- new to me

This is not a horror film itself. But, it is an arthouse Spanish film about a little girl who gets to see Frankenstein through a traveling cinema that comes to her village. It changes her.

I can't miss this altogether! Here's my list so far, and I'll be scanning yours for ideas :)

SKMB Scurry Movies 2018
In no particular order, since I’m just trying to remember what I’ve watched so far:
  • Vault of Horror-These first three are October staples for me
  • Tales From the Crypt
  • The Innocents
  • Child’s Play (1985?) (FTV) I started watching this one and realized that I’ve never seen it! No movie where I get to look at Chris Sarandon can be too bad (lol), but this one was just silly.
  • Sleepaway Camp (1983)(FTV) Ghastly, but funny nonetheless
  • The Haunting (1963)-Always love this one
  • The Haunting of Hill House (Netflix) (FTV) Good acting, great story…until the last episode. Not crazy about that. Should this count for more than one? Not sure.
  • Marrowbone (FTV) Really nicely done! Sad, but that’s Spanish horror for you
  • Hell House LLC (FTV) Hipster horror (lots of yelling F**k at each other), but it still had something. Truly creepy in parts. I keep thinking about that clown…
  • Blair Witch (FTV) It was okay. I’m very over ‘found footage’ movies, because in so few of them does constantly filming make sense. There were some nifty scenes, but for each of those there was a scene that went on too long
  • Halloween (1978)
  • Burnt Offerings-(FTV)Pretty much a “WTH did I just watch” movie. Some good scenes, but ultimately meh
  • Bride of Frankenstein-Always good!
  • The Old Dark House-Less well-known Whale movie. It has a lot of humor in it!
  • The Fly-Cronenberg version. Still love it. Made my son sick to his stomach (lol)
  • The Last House on the Left-(FTV) Daughter’s choice. Eh. It was okay. Torture and revenge.
  • Castle Rock-I gave up after 8 episodes (Don’t hate me) where nothing happened. It was boring.
  • IT (2017)-I have watched this so many times! BH wanted to see it, so I watched again and found out that he’s never seen the TV movie! He must be the only adult in America who hasn’t—lol
  • The Amityville Horror (1979?)-haven’t watched this one in years, either. It holds up surprisingly well!
  • A Cure For Wellness (FTV)-It might have been okay if the writer/director/whoever had decided what movie they were making and stuck with one idea. My animal loving friends, beware: there’s a scene with a deer that broke my heart (and made me wonder how the hell they did it without actually hurting the animal)
  • Addams Family (FTV) Can I count this one? I’m gonna.
  • The Conjuring-
  • Trilogy of Terror (FTV) Karen Black is interesting in 3 different roles.
  • The House that Dripped Blood
  • I know I’ve forgotten at least a couple, but this is a fair representation. Pretty sure I’m not going to meet last year’s high (32 or 33? Can’t remember), but this is darn good, considering. I’ll add if I get a chance to watch more, or if I remember what I forgot.

OMG! I saw that when it came out. It was really hard to find on DVD but I finally did a few years ago. It held up really well.

I'm such a slacker. I have watched:
Nightmare Before Christmas
Hocus Pocus
The Addams Family
The first 4 episodes of Mr. Mercedes

1) Ravenous (new - Netflix) - French-Canadian zombie film. Pretty decent, darkly comic in places. French (that isn't quite ;)) with English subs. 6.5/10
2) Resident Evil: The Final Chapter (new - Sky/Now TV) - the conclusion to the series of films based rather loosely on the series of games. 5/10
3) Fear The Walking Dead S3 eps 8 & 9 (new - APV)
4) The Thing (2011) (new - APV) - Decent if unnecessary prequel, though watched back to back with the 80s classic it works surprisingly well. 7/10
5) The Thing (1982)
6) Nightmares and Dreamscapes, eps The Road Virus Heads North & The Fifth Quarter
7) Fear The Walking Dead S3 eps 10 & 11 (new - APV)
8) The Limehouse Golem (new - Netflix) - Billed as a horror mystery, though IMO it had very little horror in it (some gore, but that's it). The mystery itself was OK, though, with some good performances from a pretty strong cast. 7/10
9) The Purge (new - APV) - uh-uh. 5.5/10
10) Fear The Walking Dead S3 eps 12 & 13 (new - APV)
11) Priest (new - Netflix) - Vampire capers with Paul Bettany, Karl Urban and Maggie Q. Nothing amazing, but watchable enough I suppose. 6/10
12) The Walking Dead S9 eps 1 & 2 (new - Fox/Now TV) - Something of a return to form, but probably too late to make a difference.
13) Get Out (new - Sky/Now TV) - Not entirely what I was expecting. Some great performances overcame my feeling that, in the same position, I'd have had my running shoes on long before the main events. Sometimes funny, often scary (in a thriller rather than horror sense) and always thought-provoking, I like it a lot. 9/10
14) Stephen King's Sleepwalkers - Not my first time, but hadn't seen it in ages.
15) Monsters - Again, not my first time. Features a wall that a certain president would appreciate. Not that it actually works, mind.
16) The Autopsy of Jane Doe (new - Netflix) - What it says. It's a proper creeper, too, though the autopsy scenes might be a bit too on-the-nose for some (definitely not something you want to watch while eating). 8/10
17) Fear The Walking Dead S3 ep 14 (new - APV) & The Walking Dead S9, ep 3 (new - Fox/Now TV)
18) The Haunting of Hill House eps 1 & 2 (new - Netflix) - An interesting and well-executed take on/addition to the original story. I don't typically like re-imagined stories, mainly because it seems disrespectful to the original author/producer, but that's not the case here; it's actually very respectful and creepy in its own right. 9/10 so far.
19) Apostle (new - Netflix) - So-so British effort combining elements of The Wicker Man (woman goes missing, man dispatched to island location, etc) and a dollop of magical/mystical woo-woo. Most of the actual horror is of the gore/body horror type rather than actual chills, but in modern horror it seems like a choice between that or fake jump scares (the silent and empty screen followed by sudden flash of crap CGI and eardrum-shredding shriek method). 5/10

20) Fear The Walking Dead S3 ep 15 & 16 (new - APV)
21) Hostile (new - Sky/Now TV) - Initially promising but ultimately mildly disappointing film that purports to be post-apocalyptic SF/horror but is actually a love story wearing those clothes. The effects and performances are OK and there is a certain amount of tension (even if there is about as much cliché), but the 'world' is never fleshed out to a point where it feels real. For example, there's no real mention of how, why and how fast the world went to you-know-what; it just did so there. I also guessed where it was going to end up about a third of the way in, but then it wasn't exactly difficult. 5/10.
22) Alien - Can't go wrong with this one.
23) The Fog (1980) - I could have sworn this was a 1979 film, but apparently not. Anyway...still far superior to the 2005 remake.
24) The Haunting of Hill House eps 3 & 4 (new - Netflix) - Still 9/10 from me.

4. Little Evil ~ (New for Me)
Tongue in cheek comedy horror about a kid who's possessed, and the ways he tries to kill his stepfather.

It was okay for what it was, and since I'm twisted, it kept me entertained. 3/5 Stars.

5. Bedeviled ~ (New for Me)
Haunted phone app kills teens by somehow knowing their worst fear.

Meh. 2/5 stars

6. Clown ~ (New for Me)
A father puts on an old clown costume he found in the attic in order to entertain guests at his son's birthday party......then he can't take it off.

I found it creepy and the back story was interesting......could have been better acted, but overall, not bad. 3/5 Stars.

7. Malevolent ~ (New for Me)
Brother & sister paranormal investigators make a living by faking communication with the other side......until they meet up with the real thing.

I liked it. Good little story, and not overly scary. 3/5 Stars

8 - 12. The Haunting of Hill House - 2018 Netflix ~ (New for Me)
Really nice take on the Shirley Jackson tale.

Horror is back, Y'all!!! If you haven't seen this yet, you need to. Plenty of creepiness to be had here. Yes, they took some creative licenses, but it was done very well. 5/5 Stars

I love Burnt Offerings. hahahaoheohahha! I think I have a sentimental attachment to it as I saw it in the theater as a kid. Just ignore all those pesky plot holes and go with it like this one: when you were at Aunt Elizabeth's funeral with the kid, why didn't you just stay away? Phone Marian and say, "we ain't coming back, b*tch."

Or the fact the doctor is at the house all the time for these unusual, life-threatening things but doesn't turn Marian in for Munchausens.

And I always love that they paid these people 900 dollars for the whole summer to clean, maintain, repair the home and babysit an elderly woman they have never met, had no face-to-face contact with and just accepted as part of their summer vacation like sunburns and overeating.

The Roth's PAID THEM to babysit the weird smell in the attic! This would have cost the Allardyce's thousands to hire a nurse to come into their home and take care of "mother." But the Roth's paid them for the privilege.

Where's the family who want to pay ME to take care of ME?

Here's where I'm at so far (some of this was already shared on the playground):
1. The Lodgers - I feel like this plot had potential but the film just didn't deliver. I wasn't remotely frightened at any point but I thought there were some really beautiful shots and would say it is worth watching just from that perspective.

2. Delirium - This definitely had some story issues and might have been a wee bit predictable (and dad's make-up was definitely more funny than scary) but I still enjoyed trying to figure out what was real and what wasn't.

3. The Final Girls - I was holed up at an airport motel in Buffalo and was desperate to meet my quota so I watched this since it was the only “horror” movie on TV. Wow, this was so much worse than I thought was possible. I have no idea why anyone would have even made this movie. It's technically a horror parody, I guess, but it's not remotely funny OR scary so it fails epically on all counts. I hope you never have to see this one.

4. The Nun (2004) - Having already seen the latest movie of this title (from the Conjuring franchise) back in September before the 31 in 31 challenge started, I decided it would be appropriate to sub this one in for the official event. Much like the recent movie of the same name (and, let’s face it, most of the movies I’ll watch this month), this film has an interesting premise and terrible execution. The twist at the end doesn’t really make any sense at all. You can tell they really thought they were making something special here but failed to deliver on the actual mind-****ery.

5. All I See is You - It’s really a stretch to include this one since it definitely isn’t horror but I was on vacation and this was available on the plane. It’s technically a thriller but you’d be hard-pressed to find a single thrill in this movie. It was slow and boring. Every time I thought, “Oh boy, it’s about to get good!” it totally let me down. So many missed opportunities in the writing and directing.

6. The Cloverfield Paradox - Again, not truly a horror movie but this one is close enough to count without guilt, I’d say, since there’s so much crossover in this franchise. This was not great but it had a few fun/ creepy moments and I’ll basically watch anything Chris O’Dowd is in.

7. Stir of Echos - I had seen this one before but couldn’t remember it well enough to be certain when I was reading the synopsis so I decided to give it a go. I was quickly reminded that I loved this movie when it came out a million years ago and it actually holds up pretty well but damn if I didn’t want punch Kevin Bacon’s character right in the face for being such an awful husband through the entire ****ing thing.

8. Jacob’s Ladder - This is a classic that I had somehow never seen (I guess I always thought I had seen it and skipped over it) and now I know where the writers of Star Trek: TNG got the ideas for several of my favorite episodes. I love a good puzzle movie and this definitely is one.

9. Breaking In - This is basically a retelling of that Bruce Willis Hostage move from the 90s except it’s a mother rescuing her kids from the bad guys this time. I love a movie where a woman gets to kick some ass and make smart choices. I do wish that she got to be bad ass just for the sake of being bad ass rather than having to be in mama bear mode (women aren’t only strong when they’re protecting their kids, dontcha know) but this was pretty well done. It was pretty light on the gore though.

10. Halloween (1978) - Mr. Blue and I decided to rewatch all of the movies in this franchise and then go see the new one. I forgot how absolutely terrible this is. Just...nothing about it is believable and the acting is SO BAD (sorry, Jamie Lee). I'm not sure at this point that we're actually going to make it through all of them. We'll see.

11. Halloween II - The acting is still pretty bad but I felt like this one notched the fear factor up a bit so it was more enjoyable for me than the first.

12. Halloween III: Season of the Witch - This is the one that I remember most vividly from my childhood and it has nothing at all to do with Michael Myers. I’m not sure if that’s a good thing or a bad thing but it affected me more than the others. Probably because it was far less slasher film (that’s never really been my thing). At any rate, it’s still pretty awful but I prefer this storyline to the Michael Myers story.

13. Halloween 4 (that’s right, they stopped using roman numerals here because we’re too dumb to know what IV means): The Return of Michael Myers - Well, Michael is back. Damn it. I have no idea how he survived that fire. I don’t blame Jamie Lee for getting out of dodge but that means Michael has to go after her daughter instead. Wait, she had a kid? Who is dad? Why did they leave her with foster parents; especially when she has terrible night terrors about “the boogeyman”, Michael Myers, who she’s never seen but somehow knows everything about and has a vivid image of?! I don’t understand what’s going on here! Mostly, I just wish Michael would hurry up and kill this kid because I’m sick of listening to her scream.

14. Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers - Jesus. Why can’t we kill this guy. This movie starts with them conveniently rewriting the ending to the previous movie so that Michael gets away safely after being shot in the chest 2 dozen or so times. All he needed was about a year’s worth of sleep and then he’s all set to get back to the killing game. The kid is now mute (kind of) and living in a children’s clinic. They are now referring to her foster parents as step parents because apparently the writers had no idea that those meant totally different things. No mention at all of Jamie Lee Curtis so I guess she really must be the very worst kind of mother that she wouldn’t even show up after her kid was almost murdered. Or at least move her to a facility out of town. Anyway, this is definitely the worst movie so far. The kid has some sort of psychic bond with Michael and spends the whole movie having some sort of weird seizure and predicting when someone was in trouble. Not in time to save anyone of course, but I guess she tried and that’s all you can ask.

15. Rear Window - I DEFINITELY needed a break from the Halloween movies and Alfred Hitchcock always delivers solid entertainment. I‘m sure you’ve all seen this one. A guy is in a cast and spends his time stuck in a wheelchair to spy on his neighbors and then something terrible happens (or did it?). Grace Kelly and Jimmie Stewart have to unravel the mystery with the help of a terrible detective and a crotchety nurse. If you haven’t seen it, you should definitely take the time to watch it tonight.

16. Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers - This one has Paul Rudd and that’s about all I can say for it. Though I do wonder how Jamie learned to drive after being held in captivity since she was like 6 or whatever. Also, is this baby supposed to be Michael’s?

17. Halloween H20 - This one hits the reset switch on all of the Jamie Lloyd stuff, which is probably a good thing because none of that ever made any sense to me. This was much more enjoyable than the others but still filled with all of the usual horror movie clichés (power is out/ lights don’t work, car won’t start, folks running up the stairs instead of out the door, etc.) but I have yet to see a slasher film that isn’t.

18. Halloween: Resurrection - Hold on, hold on. This one DOESN’T retcon H20 entirely but just eliminates the fact that people have lived in the house since the original murders happened? What, why? I mean, just freaking retcon all of it. What was the point of that? Overall, this one should probably be listed in the comedy category but the biggest disappointment is that we didn’t get to see Tyra Banks die in the movie (though I have since seen the cut scene on Youtube and understand why it was cut). And I know I’ve basically talked **** about all of these movies but I really have enjoyed them anyway. With the exception of some seriously problematic storylines and massive continuity issues, they’re still tons of fun to watch.

19. Halloween (2007) - This was my first time seeing this one and I think this is now my favorite of the Halloween movies just because of the soundtrack. It’s a total remake/reimagining of the original by Rob Zombie. Michael’s mom is a stripper who is married to a gross, abusive waste of space and they are just the perfect image of poor, white trash. There is WAY too much gratuitous nudity of “teen” girls for my taste but the storytelling is solid and I found it much scarier than its predecessor.

20. The House of the Witch - Some teens behave stupidly and get stuck in a house. People die.

21. The Babadook - I needed a guaranteed good one and was with a friend who needed cheering up so this rewatch was warranted. Strangely, I found it scarier on this rewatch than I did during my first viewing but maybe that’s because I was watching it at 3 am this time and I was drunk. J

22. Malevolence - This was ok. Worth a viewing, I think. I liked the whole con artists until they weren’t thing and it had the whole creepy kid thing going on which is always fun. There’s a twist that was a bit predictable and could have been more dramatic but still made for a more interesting story than just the standard haunted house fare.

23. The Open House - God, this was so bad. And the ending. Ugh. Stop wasting my time, people. Don’t watch this.
Here's my update. I can't believe I'm still on track. The first couple were previously posted on the Playground.

24. H2: Halloween II (2009) - This is definitely the goriest of the Halloween movies. I'm not sure I loved the ghost mom and mini-Michael thing but I did find it to be a thoroughly enjoyable and a satisfying conclusion. That completes my existing Halloween movie binge (though only movie 24 in my 31 in 31 challenge) so now I am pumped and ready for the new one (which I know has nothing at all to do with this).

25. The Haunting (1999) - How had I never seen this? I love Owen Wilson (and my kids like counting how many times he says “wow”). At any rate, I haven’t been watching the Hill House series yet because I feel weird about counting TV shows in my 31 in 31 so there just hasn’t been time for it so it was nice to sneak a related movie in (I also recently listened to the audible version of the original book). It’s definitely more of an “inspired by” situation rather than a direct retelling and was not nearly as frightening as I’m expecting the new series to be but it was fun and managed to stand the test of time relatively well.

26. Halloween (2018) - OK, this was the best of the Halloween movies (so far). The acting was better, the jokes were funnier, the easter eggs were fun and worked in appropriately so as not to be distractions, the scares were (mostly) scary, and the storyline made sense (except for this stupid scene toward the end involving the shrink that was total nonsense). I give this one two tumbs up. Or at least one and a half.

27. Ravenous - This a campy movie about cannibalism that I watched on my son’s girlfriend’s recommendation. It was ok. It had a good cast anyway but was short on scares.

28. Apostle - At times a bit too slow moving for my taste but this movie about a brother trying to rescue his sister from an island cult in the early 1900s did win me over. It is sweet, gruesome, and scary though I had trouble with the dialogue at times.

29. Friend Request - I fully expected to hate this one. I mean it is obviously heavily influenced by The Ring and Final Destination, neither of which are favorites of mine, and I’m not a teenager but I really liked it! I have some issues with the ending though. I had a feeling that’s where they were going but it doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to me given the backstory. Still, I’d recommend it for the excellent creep-out factor.

29. Mortuary (2005) (FTV)

Tobe Hooper directed this low budget film about a family run mortuary that has a mystery moss growing beneath it that reanimates cadavers. I enjoyed this film, and was surprised to see it received almost universally bad reviews everywhere I looked. Maybe because people expect more from Tobe Hooper, or maybe because the movie has an uneven tone (starts serious and focused, gets more and more ridiculous), or maybe because the CGI moss effects are quite bad. But the movie has a lot of fun in it, if you give it a chance. Hooper establishes a nice creepy tone in the rotting old mortuary, and there are characters to root for as well as root against or just laugh at. Yes, things do get pretty out of control by the end as the moss infects more people, but the energy and entertainment value just kept rising the crazier it got.

3 out of 5 stars.
