15. LEGO Scooby Doo Haunted Hollywood (FTV)

Scooby Doo and pals investigate a series of hauntings at a run-down Hollywood studio, while filming a production of their own. This is straight-to-video stuff for the kiddies, nothing particularly special but a few good lines here and there. Homages to classic horror characters (without infringing on Universal Studios intellectual property) are a highlight.

3 out of 5 stars.

17. Burnt Offerings

This is one of my sentimental favorites I watch every year just about.

And I've said it before and I'll say it again, these people pay 900 bucks to rent this place, work their asses off cleaning it, repairing it, yard maintenance on a jungle of landscape, AND they took on the care of a senior citizen. They PAID for the privilege of baby sitting a senior citizen and do all this damn work ON THEIR SUMMER VACATION! The Allardyces saw these rubes coming a mile away!

Still love it though because I saw it in the theater and it's a great memory.

Terrific trailer.

16. In The Tall Grass (FTV)

Based on the Stephen King/Joe Hill novella, a group of individuals are lost in a strange field of tall grass where the usual rules of time and space don't seem to apply. This is sort of a combination of "Cube" and "Children of the Corn" with a little bit of "Triangle" mixed in, although not really as original or compelling as any of those. As a fan of both authors, I was expecting more, but I fear this story is just too thin to carry a feature-length film. It's watchable for the first third or so, but then you realize there just isn't much to this besides a lot of screaming and shouting for other lost people and a sense that nothing really matters, because the principles of causality no longer apply.

2 out of 5 stars.

They announced an upcoming 3d animated Scooby Doo movie the other day, Scooby was my childhood favorite but I haven't really gone and rewatched all the incarnations I grew up with. I remember the classic incarnation, 13 ghosts, What's New Scooby Doo, and Mystery Inc the best, but I remember a few episodes of several of the other incarnations like the one where they'd have celebrity guests. Also there were the made for TV movies like Zombie Island and Cyber Chase and the Wii games I played for several hours. I found an old What's New Scooby Doo dvd like a few months ago and watched it for old time's sake only for my nostalgia tinted lenses to be tarnished by how lazy some of the writing and animation was, even for an early 2000s kids show. I want to rewatch the early 2010s incarnation "Mystery Inc" again as that one tried something new and from what I've heard actually still holds up. Favorite monster was the Space Kook from the classic incarnation and the gator people from MI.

Velveeta cheese of cheese, this thing was just a how-to of bad acting. Starring Tawny Kitaen ( stay on the hoods of cars, babe). And I've been pronouncing Quija wrong all these years. Because they make damn sure to school us on that.

6. The Gate (1987)

Two boys find a hole in the backyard that is a gateway for demons. This one was ok but it’s more for kids than grizzled adults. It’s kind of cool to see Stephen Dorff as a little kid. 5/10

7. Cloverfield (2008)

An intense “found footage” movie. It takes a while to get going but once you’re past the setup, the movie is an wild ride. The jumpy hand held camera is kind of irritating though. 8/10

8. Creepshow episode 1 (2019)

This is a series made for Shudder. I signed up for the free trial to check this out. Episode 1 includes the story Gray Matter. I wasn’t sure what to expect but episode 1 was good. 7/10

17. As Above, So Below (FTV)

Shaky-cam horror mystery in the French catacombs. Part Indiana Jones, part National Treasure, part horror movie, this film is fun for a while, if a little fatiguing (don't watch on a big screen). You have to sort of accept certain ridiculous things, like translations of ancient texts somehow managing to rhyme in English, and the ancients using measurements such as feet, and all kinds of alchemy gobbledygook, but if you roll with it, it's not bad. The best horror this film brings to life is the sense of claustrophobia, which pervades the whole affair. The plot could have used some extra thickening, though, as things sort of sputter towards the end.

3 out of 5 stars.

18. Life (cool alien ripoff)
