6. Joker (FTV)

Hapless clown-for-hire and comedian wannabe descends into madness and finds his true calling as a violent supervillain. What's this, a superhero flick on a horror movie list? But if horror movies frighten us, reflect the violence of a sick society, or show us monsters causing mayhem, then Joker has every right to be on this list. It is telling that the most scary things in this movie were those that were the most recognizable from real life.

Joker posits that monsters are made, not born, a symptom of a relentlessly cruel and uncaring society that gives them no other place to go. The brutal life of Arthur Fleck (aka Joker) has shaped who he has become, and we're not surprised at all when he finally snaps; indeed, there's a sort of sick catharsis to it. Joaquin Phoenix gives the performance of a lifetime, and although the film is decidedly downbeat and dark, there's a certain beauty to it. This is precisely what only cinema can do, and I am glad to see that movies like this can still get made. Taxi Driver and The King of Comedy meets Fight Club.

4 out of 5 stars.

7. Annabelle Comes Home (FTV)

Third installment in the Annabelle series from The Conjuring universe features the creepy haunted doll scaring some babysitters. This is a pretty thin plot whose purpose is twofold: string together a series of scary scenes, and expand The Conjuring universe to set up future movies. If you're looking for a strong or even necessary storyline, don't bother, but sometimes a series of scary scenes are good enough. This one has a different feel from prior entries, being aimed more squarely at a teen or even tween audience despite its R rating. If you want a high body count, you're going to be disappointed.

However, I still enjoyed this movie despite these flaws, as we finally get to really see what's in that forbidden room of cursed items, and what they can do when disturbed--there are some great monsters set up that I hope get movies of their own (of course they will). Although the whole story could have been told in half the time, I think one of the deleted scenes should have been included for an important part of the lead character's development--it seemed they were more interested in the backstory of one of the supporting characters. Of course, quite a few other scenes could have been excluded entirely--I'm looking at you, superfluous werewolf.

3 out of 5 stars.

Brilliant review, Feef. For some time now I've been impressed with your detailed, yet succint, reviews. They seem to get to the heart of the movie without spoiling anything. My hat's off to you. You and Dana Jean are gifted in this area.
Thank you, Doc, you're very kind! I always look forward to this time of year, it's a great writing exercise to attempt to encapsulate a movie in a few sentences.

I used to do long movie write ups, but wasn't sure anyone was reading them so quit. It's a lot of effort. And I was just, aw, f*** it.

I'm lucky if I have the strength for one or two words now.

aw, thanks for the shout out!
You're welcome! My cup of admiration is spiked with 100 proof envy; trust me. LOL. I think one gifted writer easily recognizes another and without a trace of flattery I consider you both superior in this area, and, by comparison, my dearth of originality is on full display. Every time I write a book review, it is either tiresomely derivative or too garish. Maybe this is why I stick to writing fiction. Both of you possess talent by the bundle.

Wow. That is very flattering. I think my ego just demanded I worship it.

This made me laugh all night. Heh. Oh, yeah, another rule I seem to disregard (even in previous post): Keep It Simple, Stupid!
No, it was a lovely thing to say. And everyone likes to hear kind things about themselves. We're people that way.

I would say all the nice things you said about me (us) right back to you.
