4. Murders in the Zoo (FTV)

An insanely jealous husband/zoologist uses captive animals to dispose of his adulteress wife's suitors. Released in 1933, this Universal Studios movie predates the Hayes Code, so there are several scenes that are more potent than usual Hollywood fare. For starters, it opens with a man having his mouth brutally sewn shut for daring to try to kiss another man's wife, and is left behind to be consumed by lions. There are many scenes involving actual animals in old-time zoo restraints, so if you're sensitive about animal treatment, you might want to look the other way. There's a particularly brutal fight scene between a group of lions and cheetahs that couldn't have been faked.

However, the most cringe-worthy scenes involve a hapless semi-reformed drunk who talks his way into being the zoo's publicity agent. Never has comic relief been so unfunny, so painful to watch. But it's an already short film so I guess they had to put in some filler material. Anyway, at least it delivers on the title's promise: there are lots of murders using zoo animals as the weapon. Particularly impressive was the scene where a cheating woman is tossed casually into an alligator pit with real alligators waiting. Spoiler alert, it doesn't end well for her! And look for a young Randolph Scott as a scientist, more than a decade before he became known for his many cowboy/western roles.

That second picture - the one with the guy whose mouth is stitched up - wasn't that also in Salem's Lot (or Jerusalem's Lot?) - it was many years ago that I read it.

Oh shoot - I looked it up - it was Harvest Home by Thomas Tryon from 1973 - seems I got my books mixed up - ooops!

10. Brightburn (FTV)

Superman origin story re-imagined as a horror film where his intentions are evil rather than good. Brightburn is compelling viewing, managing to take a well-worn tale and add a dark twist that keeps us watching. All of the actors give solid performances, with the young Superman (here called Brian rather than Clark) a standout, looking and acting somewhat like a prepubescent Christopher Walken. It's not particularly terrifying but entertaining, although I can't help wondering why they reveal the boy's identity so early in the film (no spoiler here, it's literally the opening scene where we find out he's from another world). I am not alone in thinking more tension could have been achieved if this had been kept secret from the audience until the final third, where it would have made for a heck of a twist. But, if they withheld that information, then they couldn't exactly market this as a "dark Superman" origin story, right? It's a missed opportunity that kept this movie from true greatness, but when it comes to horror, I'm still satisfied with "pretty good".

11. The Spiral Staircase (FTV)

Mute servant at a gothic mansion is pursued by a serial killer who targets handicapped women. Nothing like a 1940's "old dark house" whodunnit movie with an ensemble cast to get you in the mood for Halloween. Dorothy McGuire does an excellent job without saying a single word, her range of expressions are captivating. Veteran actress Ethel Barrymore got an Academy Award nomination for best supporting actress, in another challenging role where she never leaves her bed. And for horror fans of serial killer movies, this film could arguably be called the first slasher, although not big on onscreen violence, the bodies pile up one by one and the tension is high, with a climactic scene that's nerve-wracking. Alfred Hitchcock would be proud of this, or at least jealous he hadn't directed it.

12. The Shining

Failed writer takes job as winter caretaker at a remote Colorado haunted hotel with his psychic son and frazzled wife. There's probably no point to reviewing such a well-known movie with so many classic scenes that have been analyzed to death, so just a few thoughts. The new 4k transfer is simply amazing. I really felt like I was seeing this film the way it was intended for the first time. Not only was the image quality excellent for something filmed 40 years ago, but the colors popped more than previous versions. Never has the yellow Volkswagen looked so yellow, and the blood from the elevator scene so richly crimson.

I got to meet actor Danny Lloyd last year at a smaller convention and had a surprising amount of one-on-one time to talk with him, so it was cool seeing someone in the movie that I've had an actual conversation with. This viewing was also a special treat for me because it was the first time my teenage daughter had seen the movie, and she loved it. I showed her 2001 earlier this year, and she's now convinced Stanley Kubrick is the greatest filmmaker who ever lived. I think I'll wait a few more years until she's ready for "A Clockwork Orange"!

13. Madhouse (1981) (FTV)

A teacher is menaced by a deranged fraternal twin sister who recently escaped from a hospital. Nicely presented by Arrow Video on Blu Ray for the first time, this has the feel of an Italian giallo shot in America, which is exactly what it is. Outlawed by British authorities as a "video nasty", Madhouse is more than just a low budget exploitation film, with decent atmosphere, quirky characters, and some truly nasty violence. This is more than just another evil twin movie, instead it's more about thinking you've left your abusive childhood behind, only to have it rear its ugly head again. The director wisely keeps the bad twin at arms length, letting her vicious dog do most of her bidding, although sometimes the dog is very obviously a puppet which is a bit funny. There's a bit of a twist that I don't think will surprise anyone, but once it's revealed the movie gleefully takes things to the next level, and the final climactic "birthday party" scene is pretty gruesome.

14. Child's Play (2019) (FTV)

Remake of the 1988 horror favorite re-imagines the evil doll movie as a technology gone wrong horror thriller. The original Child's Play was somewhat of a guilty pleasure but quite fun, and this remake pretty much falls in the same category. Good performances, quirky characters, bad people getting their just desserts, and some pretty creative (if convoluted) kills that aren't afraid to be gory. And Chucky's voiced by Mark Hamill! Walking the fine line between funny and stupid, but always entertaining.

Event Horizon (1997): Another disappointment, the concept is so cool but the actual movie kinda falls flat, it didn’t really utilize it’s sci-fi setting in place of using traditional haunted house tropes. If this movie utilized it’s sci fi/cosmic horror better and had more of a slow burn to it I would’ve liked it more. I did hear that the director’s cut never saw the light of day though, so maybe that’s why it sucked.
4/10
Would I recommend it?: Not really

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974): Legendary low-budget slasher and probably the movie that invented the iconic final girl trope. This movie is creepy, disorientating, and creative. My one complaint is that a lot of this movie can be really hard to see/hear, I only watched it from a dvd I found for 3 dollars in the half-price books bargain bin though, I’ve heard it looks way better on the digitally remastered version though. As a Texan myself, I’d say this movie really hits home with it’s portrayal of typical suburban life here.
7/10
Would I recommend it?: Yes

Fright Night (1985): Another purposefully campy 80s flick, it wasn’t amazing but I loved how over the top it was, and the special effects were really cool. Can’t really think of much else to say.
6/10
Would I recommend it?: Maybe

The Stuff (1985): Oh my god this movie was beautiful. Fun, cheesy, purposefully-campy 80s Blob ripoff that also happens to be a social commentary on the dangers of commercialism. The many commercials were the best part
6/10
Would I recommend it?: Yes

IT Chapter II (2019): I absolutely loved it, way better than the first one. The opening scene with Adrian Mellon was super well done, right out of the book. Although it differentiated a lot from the book, I thought the changes were all well done and I loved the fan service the movie did have, and King’s cameo was great. The cgi was also much better than the first one. Also The Thing reference was super cool. Although I was a little upset that when Pennywise asked if Richie wanted to play Street Fighter they didn’t start duking it out in the arcade, I bet he’s a Blanka main. Out of all the things in this movie the only thing that made me legit jump was when Bill got smacked by the pendulum things in the funhouse lol.
8/10
Would I recommend it?: Definitely

Saw (2004): I like how this one opted to be a more mystery/crime thriller where as the other ones would go on to go overboard with the traps and practically be snuff films, the traps in this one were few, simple, and effective. I thought the editing, while very early 2000’s horror, were interesting and worked well with the movie, the only thing I really didn’t like about it was the constant slow-mo scenes, they were very unnecessary and detracted from the scene. And the twist is iconic. Not amazing, but not bad, and it did its concept well.
6/10
Would I recommend it?: Yes

The Blob (1988): The kills and special effects were cool but nothing else in this movie really did anything for me, some of the humor was okay, but nothing else besides that. I fell asleep near the end of this movie so maybe I missed something good. Poor Meg, first alien jelly and then reverse bear traps.
5/10
Would I recommend it?: Maybe

Candyman (1992): Pleasantly surprised, I really enjoyed it. It was simple, yet scary and well executed. I really liked the twist ending, but thought the actual execution was a bit too much, it would’ve worked better if she just flashed once behind him before the credits rolled and left what happened after to the audience’s imagination. Virginia Madsen’s performance was great, and Tony Todd does an excellent performance of the hook-handed spirit. Almost a 9/10 but it felt like the movie had trouble ending itself and while I liked the ending it dragged on for just a bit too long so….
8.5/10
Would I recommend it?: Definitely

My list so far (*=new to me):
Killer Klowns from Outer Space* 7/10
A Nightmare on Elm Street* 5/10
Event Horizon* 4/10
Texas Chainsaw Massacre* 7/10
Fright Night* 6/10
The Stuff* 6/10
IT pt. II* 8/10
Saw* 6/10

OK so far this is it:

1. The Nun - Takes place in romania in a nunnery where evil is on the lose.. Not bad at all 3,5/5
2. Jigsaw - A sequel to the Saw-movies. But more like the actually good first movie than the gore followups. 3/5
3. 2012 - A disaster flick but i'm counting it. After all, the End of the World is a horrifying concept. 2,5/5
4. In The Tall Grass - Liked it! I must here with shame admit that i havent read the book. I liked the limericks!! 4/5
5. Down A Dark Hall - The plot sounds totally corny when i wrote it in my head but while the movie is going it works well. 3,5/5
6. Hush - A deafmute author is set about by a crazy killer in her remote cottage. Not original but wellmade. 4/5
7. Veronica - Spanish horror of the demonpossessed teen type. It was OK but nothing great. Liked the young actress playing the main part. 3/5
8. Midsommar - Wow! What a disappointment!!! I had been hoping for a decent horrorflick but no. The two main actors, if i should compliment them by that name, walked around like puppets, you could almost hear the director saying go there , say that, it wasnt good acting. Crappy script and a direction that stunk. 147 minutes long was at least an hour too much. Oh and this has not anything to do with the movies quality, i just wanted anyone to know that this has nothing to do with midsommar and the movie was filmed in Hungary, not sweden. I honestly dont know what it tried to do. If it tried to be scary it failed big time. If it tried to build athmosphere or something it completely failed. Should have watched The Wicker Man a Little more perhaps. Long time since i saw such a bad one. 0,5/5
9. Jaws - Felt i needed a Good movie after Midsommar to give me faith in the genre again. 5/5
10. The Thing - Needed one more certified GOOD MOVIE to recuperate. 5/5

13. JOKER*

As fushingfeef says above, there is beauty in the cold, cruel, bleak, doomed look and feel of this film.

Joaquin gives a phenomenal performance and deserves an Oscar nod, if not the Oscar. His commitment to this performance I would dare say is one of the most exquisite creations I have ever seen on film. The melting Dali look of his face, not just the make-up, but his actual skin; the disturbing ballet movements he incorporates into his creation along with his emaciated/heroin chic physique -- unbelievable dedication to bring the origin story to the screen.
This performance should be watched very closely. Apparently he lost 52 pounds for this role and it totally shows in a very frightening way.

It's not a comic book story. Not at all. But, I would think passionate DC fans would applaud this film as a serious character study of nature vs. nurture. It treats the comic world with the dignity and respect it deserves.

Gorgeous cinematography, perfect musical choices and nostalgic film clips -- this is a film for all the senses. Yes, even smell and taste because you can almost experience the blood, sweat, tears and gritty inner city life happening around these characters. Synesthesia.

Joaquin IS the tragic figure of Joker and what can happen when man's inhumanity to man is commonplace, ignored, accepted. His presence on the screen isn't a comic book cookie-cutter idea, but a well acted and written human being; dismissed and discarded by everyone, forced to become what he becomes.

Brilliant and fulfilling visual. Loved it.

I am WAAAAYYY behind this year. Had company for a week, then got sick. But I will do my best to catch up, at least a little.

1. Patient Zero 2018 ftv A super virus has turned humankind into highly intelligent, streamlined killers, and an asymptomatic victim who can communicate with the infected must lead the last survivors on a hunt for Patient Zero and a cure. Matt Smith, Natalie Dormer Stanley Tucci

Not a great one to start my marathon with. Pretty meh. It was fun to see GoT alums Natalie Dormer and the guy who played Sam on screen together but that is pretty much the only thing that stood out for me with this one!

2. Hell Fest 2018 ftv A serial killer in costume murders visitors at a Halloween theme park, unbeknownst to bystanders who think it's all part of the fun.

This one was predictable but it was a fun watch.

3. The Nightmare Before Christmas

Just a fun family movie, had been a while since I had watched it.

1. The Exorcism Of Emily Rose
2. Annabelle Comes Home
3. Mrs. Amworth
4. Friday The 13th
5. Friday The 13th Part 3
6. Under The Shadow ( really good Iranian set supernatural flick)
7. Doom Annihilation (dumb but kinda fun)
8. Horde (French zombie flick)
9. Legend Of The Werewolf (Underrated film starring Peter Cushing, Ron Moody and David Rintoul)
10. Dracula's Daughter
11. Son Of Dracula
12. Visiting Hours (1982, cool slasher/thriller with Michael Ironside)
13. Crawl (re-watched it with my daughter, she got freaked out by it and couldn't watch it all)
14. Psycho II (fine sequel to the original classic, Perkins gives a touching and innocent performance)
15. When Animals Dream (a Danish werewolf flick, pretty good, has a sexual awakening subtext to the whole proceedings)
16. Harbinger Down (Disappointing movie comes across as a mix of Alien and The Thing it's a practical effects movie no CGI at all.)
17. The Woman In Black ( Daniel Radcliffe stars in this really good remake of the 1989 made for tv movie, plenty of jump scares and a nice creepy vibe throughout)
