31. Us (FTV)

A family is tormented by a family that seems to be an exact mirror image of them. While stories of doppelgängers have been around for centuries, once again director Jordan Peele ("Get Out") brings a breath of fresh air to the horror genre by trying something new and horrifying while giving us something a little deeper to sink our teeth into, if we want to. Or you can just enjoy it as a straightforward horror thriller without thinking about any social commentary, it's all good.

Peele has made a fully fleshed out mythology here, and sometimes he's a bit too eager to overexplain things when it would be more effective to keep it ambiguous, especially in the film's final act. Also, his insistence on incorporating the 1980's "Hands Across America" motif, as well as the inclusion of a bunch of rabbits, is a bit forced and seems unnecessary. While the movie isn't quite as good as the hype surrounding it, it's still pretty damn good, and darkly funny in a way that doesn't detract from the scares. The opening scene could be a movie in itself, especially intense for parents. The movie is quite effective is in establishing characters that feel real and a modern family that doesn't fall into the usual stereotypes. The performances are uniformly excellent, in fact I'd make a strong argument for Lupita Nyong'o to be nominated for Best Actress, but that'll never happen since this is horror. I'll be watching this one again.

4 out of 5 stars.

Well kids, it's been a great month of horror! I've greatly enjoyed reading all of your posts, thoughts, reviews and recommendations, and I appreciate anyone who's taken the time to read mine.

I'll be watching one more horror movie tonight after the board closes so my review will have to wait until Tuesday. Until then, Happy Halloween!

32. Beware! The Blob

The Blob is back in this campy 1971 flick directed by Larry Hagman! Larry must've called in some favors to get this made, he's not particularly good as a director here, with some scenes feeling more like long drunken outtake reels, but he managed to get a cast of some pretty big names: Burgess Meredith, Sid Haig, Carol Lynley, Cindy Williams, and the indefatigable Dick Van Patten as a Boy Scout leader.

The movie throws down the gauntlet early by having the blob first consume a cute little kitten, before moving on to human prey such as comedian Godfrey Cambridge, who reportedly found the blob in a canister while working on an arctic pipeline. As the blob rampages, we get to see it consume corrupt cops, stoner hippies, and in my favorite dark comedic moment, a guy in a wheelchair who is bowling (why not?)

This movie is not meant to be taken too seriously and is honestly kinda crappy, but for those of us who remember the 1970's, that pretty much fits the bill.

3 out of 5 stars.

If you can post your final total here for the month, that would be great! I suspect morgan may have watched the most movies with Dana Jean in 2nd, but I'm not 100% certain. Regardless, this isn't really a competition to see who could watch the most, I just like knowing how many movies we watched overall!

That's it for me, I squeezed in just one extra movie this month, for a total of 32! I had a 3-day trip to LA so keeping up with at least one movie per day wasn't always convenient, but I've been doing this enough years that I do it out of love for the movies and to get in the Halloween spirit! Thanks again for all of you who joined us here in our mutual love of spooky movies and TV shows!

I am just going to repeat my early list plus add to it.

1. Patient Zero 2018 ftv A super virus has turned humankind into highly intelligent, streamlined killers, and an asymptomatic victim who can communicate with the infected must lead the last survivors on a hunt for Patient Zero and a cure. Matt Smith, Natalie Dormer Stanley Tucci

2. Hell Fest 2018 ftv A serial killer in costume murders visitors at a Halloween theme park, unbeknownst to bystanders who think it's all part of the fun.

3. The Nightmare Before Christmas

4. Twilight Zone The Movie 1983

5. In the Tall Grass 2019 netflix ftv

6. A Quiet Place 2018 ftv A family must live in silence to avoid mysterious creature that hunt by sound.

I thought this was pretty good. Not so much scary as suspenseful. Everyone in the family watched together.

7. The House With a Clock In Its Walls 2018 ftv Jack Black, Cate Blanchett Ten year old Louis goes to live with his uncle in a creaky old house that contains a mysterious tick tock noise.

Not really a horror movie but it kinda fits. Cute story. Never read the book, so cannot comment on if it was a faithful adaptation but we all enjoyed this one together as a family.

8. The Fog 1980
Good older movie. Been a few years but I had seen it before.

9. Blood Fest 2018 ftv Fans flock to a festival celebrating iconic horror movies, only to discover that the showman behind the event has a diabolical agenda.

I tried (half-heartedly) to find out if this one was loosely related to the Hell Fest movie from earlier in my list, but never found an answer. It was a fun campy movie. Easy watch.

10. The Uninvited 1944 ftv A British brother and sister move to a coastal mansion haunted by two ghosts.

Now I thought I had seen this one before but I did not recognize any of the story. I very much enjoyed this one.

11. Hocus Pocus

Tradition in my house!

12. Nightmare on Elm Street 3 Dream Warriors
Meh.

13. AHS 1984 eps 4 and 5
I don't usually count tv but was trying to catch up! This season is all over the place plot wise but as others have said, the 80s stuff is fun fun.

14. Walking Dead eps 2 and 3
Again, catching up.

15. Nightmare on Elm Street 1984
Daughter wanted to watch this, ftv for her and she was bored silly. It was fun to watch the original again, for me, has been many years!

16. The Skeleton Key 2005
Seen before, but a very good suspense movie. I really love Kate Hudson she is so beautiful.

17. Nightmare on Elm Street 2 Freddy's Revenge 1985
I did not remember this one, but I know I've seen it before! Not very good for being only pt 2.

18. Pet Sematary 1989
I love this movie.

19. Glass 2018 ftv Vigilante David Dunn has an epic showdown with the superhuman Beast and the mysterious Elijah Price
Ok I have seen the other 2 in the trilogy but the only one I really liked was Split. This one was ok, and it is nice to have the 3 tied together but really I don't get why it was a trilogy to begin with.

20. Pet Sematary 2 1992
I have seen this before but remembered it being bad. I did not think it was terrible this time! Definite cheesy moments but I thought it held the "flavor" of the original story well.

21. Replicas 2018 ftv Keanu Reeves a brilliant neuroscientist secretly tries to clone and create replicas of his family after a tragic car crash
Had never heard of this before. Looked it up after I watched it and it had terrible reviews. I did not think it was too bad. Worth a watch, especially if you are a Keanu fan.

22. The Possession of Hannah Grace 2018 ftv a nighttime morgue worker starts to suspect a disfigured body is possessed by a demonic force.
I normally dislike horror movies that have religious undertones. This one was not heavy on the religion and I thought it was pretty scary!

23. The Cabin in the Woods 2011 Two unseen scientists manipulate the gory goings on at a backwoods cabin inhabited by a group of friends
Love this movie. Classic!

24. Down a Dark Hall 2018 ftv Five emotionally fragile teens are committed to a mysterious boarding school for gifted and disturbed girls
Guess this was based on a popular YA book from years ago. I probably would have loved it when I was younger, but now, it was pretty so-so.

25. Beetlejuice
It's showtime!

26. Fright Night 1985
Another tradition in my house.

27. Signs 2002
Watched this one with my youngest, ftv for him. He was skeptical but he was so enthralled. I loved it. This is my favorite M. Night Shamamlomadingdong (haha! Was it skimom who called him that??) movie.

Did not make it to 31 but think I did pretty good, considering everything going on at my house in October.

Final count 27.

Thanks ff!! I enjoyed it once again!

16. Harbinger Down (Disappointing movie comes across as a mix of Alien and The Thing it's a practical effects movie no CGI at all.)

32. Eli (A Netflix original, really good, quite atmospheric)
33. Zombieland; Double Tap (enjoyable enough, some good funny bits)
34. Creepshow (first two episodes of the tv show, overall, not too bad)
35. The Wolfman ( I really like this one, I thought it deserved a better reception on it's release, Benicio del Toro plays the part of Larry Talbot very well)
36. Horror Express (Cool take on the novel Who Goes There?, starring Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing)
37. The Girl With All The Gifts (So-so zombie flick)
