Okay, maybe not like Saul on the road to Damascus, but three books which influenced and informed your life in some way. I'm taking my queue from this video:

Please share your answers below. Gaiman's answers are all books he read during his formative years but I suppose you can choose books from any point in your life.

Where's your three, Shan? You cannot post a thread asking a question without answering it yourself. It's axiomatic for cryin' out loud!!! :D

I hate to copy one of his answers, but I too was influenced by the Narnia books, especially the first one. I was a little older, though. In third grade, maybe.

My second choice would be Misery. Until that point I'd read nothing like it. I was jolted into the world of horror and it was probably the catalyst which made me want to write. Reading King at thirteen was my foray into the adult world.

Third, I'd say Lord of the Flies. I read this in high school. It was just a shocking book and I remember our entire English class discussing these characters like they were real people. We were somehow sick for them, worried for the little boy. I think I can say it changed me because it made me realize there is power in fiction. I'd previously thought anything worth learning would come from a text book or from non-fiction.

One that I discover something new with each re-read. I've read it three times in my lifetime, at a different decade in age and always find something new. I feel it calling to me for another round.
I've read it only once. Yes, I think this will be the year I read it again. I noticed you spoke a lot about your admiration for Steinbeck last year and now I want to read his other stuff.

Steinbeck's in my top three. I haven't read everything he's written, still working on that, but his writing style is very accessible. He's all for the 'little guy' who doesn't have a voice of their own. Reading The Grapes Of Wrath was an eye opener for me- how we as Americans can treat our fellow man so horribly when all they're trying to do is make a better life for themselves. Whoa! How prophetic on what's happening today. But, I digress and am on the verge of entering the Hot Topics area......;)
