This is an overused genre. Too common really but there is still some inventive good ones out there. Many of them actually since this is such a usual ploy in mystery fiction.
An abundance of choices but these are my 5 picks.

1. Silence of The Lambs - Thomas Harris . Perhaps the best of the ordinary serial killer novels.
2. The shining Girls - Lauren Beukes. An australian author that has written this mix of serialkiller novel and timetravel novel that works. An amazing read.
3. Zombie - Joyce Carol Oates . A look into a serial killers mind that is absolutely terrifying.
4. Child 44 - Tom Rob Smith. The hunt for a russian serial killer in Stalins Russia. Under a regime that denies that such crimes occur in their perfect society. But commisar Davidov still search for a solution. Great read.
5. Psycho - Robert Bloch A classic.

There were contenders. Many of them. The Poet by Michael Connelly, The Snowman By Jo Nesbo, The Bone Collector, The Talented Mr Ripley but i stick with my choices. And i'm sure you disagree so out with it. Tell me how wrong i am and tell me your faves.

Chelsea Cain wrote a good serial killer series.

I have not read all of them, I think the first 3. But I liked them and they were different because the villain is a woman.

Silence of the Lambs is excellent and I have not read The Snowman but I have seen the movie and it was really good.

My favorite serial killer is Serge A. Storms. He's from the author I got to meet a few months ago. Mostly set in Florida, Serge has a habit of killing only really annoying people that deserve it in fun and inventive ways!

Do you have to read his books in a certain order? Or would you recommend one? I will add him to my TBR pile.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I've got to stay out of these threads; my "to be read next" pile never stops growing!

You really don't need to read them in order. They are stand alone but happen to have recurring characters. Some of my favorites are Torpedo Juice, Hurricane Punch, Triggerfish Twist, Orange Crush and The Big Bamboo. But really, just look at your local library and/or thrift store and see what they've got. They are all hilarious!
