I'm going on a hiking trip in a couple of days and I need to choose a novel to take along. I originally wanted to re-read The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon but unfortunately I can't have it delivered in time. I'm now considering either taking It or The Stand. I will definitely read both but in your opinion, which of the two novels will be more enjoyed in a forest setting around a camp fire with no electricity or cellphone reception? Other suggestions also welcome. TIA

Hi and welcome. I agree with FlakeNoir, TGWLTG with it's settling in the woods would be my first choice, however, "It " is an excellent read for a trip in the woods.

If it's purely hiking, either book is a lot to be lugging along (unless you have some sort of e-reader--lol). I'm a proponent of 'live in the moment', so I say enjoy the hike, the woods, and your companions (if you have them).

It. Only because I think it's a better book. I know that's like blasphemy to some.

The opinion is more common than you think, no blasphemy at all.

IT and The Shining are probably The Stand's main rival in terms of popularity out of all SK books overall among hardcore fans, casual fans, and first time readers and people who consume his work via other media. Actually, IT is probably more mainstream popular than The Stand.

The Stand might have wider audience appeal in terms of genres and literary inspiration but IT's miniseries has lasted longer in peoples memories, new adaptation, book getting a surge in popularity and clear influence on Stranger Things.

I'm willing to bet a lot more people know lines, moments, and scenes from IT than they do The Stand.

The Stand isn't nearly as marketed for atm.
