A bit disappointed with Mr. Mercedes?

I'm absolutely loving Mercedes. Maybe that's largely due to my enjoyment of detective murder mysteries. But I'm telling anyone who cares what my humble opinion is that Mr Mercedes is as well-written a book as I've ever read.

I normally do not like murder mysteries. Mr. Mercedes is an exception in that regards for me.

I found it comparable to Colorado Kid, which is very different from King's "normal" writing. I Loved Colorado Kid, but it's another that I think has it's haters.

The only King book I hate is Cujo. Not because it's poorly written, but because it is about my phobia and it's the one book of his I found absolutely terrifying. I had to finish the book because the characters were so real to me, I felt like if I didn't finish the book I was leaving them stuck like that forever. I had to finish it and then probably should have gone in to therapy. <shudder> just the name and I'm getting scared <shudder>

Hi Neesy
I'm a huge fan of Stephen King but every now and again I just can't get into his stories.
My favourites are The Stand, The Dark Tower series, most of his short stories and heaps more.
I've been trying to read The Shining for months but have only got about half way as I brought the follow up book and realised that I had never read The Shining !!! Some books are just hard to get into.
That is true - I did not really like book one of the Dark Tower series i.e. The Gunslinger - it was just so different from the rest of his writing

I just finished it yesterday. Great read. Nicely paced enjoyable characters and didn't out stay its welcome!
Looking forward to Finders Keepers.

I hear what you are saying, but I wouldn't expect every story to have the same feel or flow, we are not the same people our whole lives long and I'm sure lots of different factors come into play when somebody is writing. (and for us as readers too)
But again, it's okay to not like something. :)

My knee-jerk reaction to your previous post I guess was triggered by the "Mr Crap Mercedes" comment. You seem to have read and enjoyed quite a few of his stories, but feel it is okay to insult the man like this on his site because you didn't enjoy one or two stories? I sometimes wonder if people would treat him the same way in person?
Insult the man? Now, where did I insult him? I would never ever insult SK, I think he is a brilliant writer, to say he is my favourite writer by a green mile would be an understatement. He is in a class of his own, and no other author even comes close, in my opinion. However, to say one of his books is crap compared to his normal standard, is not an insult. It's just simply stating an opinion, nothing personal. If I deliver a report at my work that's crap, I'll expect to be told as much. It's not an insult, just a matter of fact.

...no they wouldn't...they don't have the sack to say it to his face...easier to slink in here and insult our host and the rest of us "run of the mill fans", then go back into mom's basement...
Now under which rock did you crawl out from?
If I would ever be so lucky to meet SK (little chance of that in Aus unfortunately!), I would love to ask him why he wrote a substandard book (crap in aussie speak) like Mr Mercedes. How can you write something epic like The Stand and then something like Mr Mercedes?

Somewhere over the Rainbow
here I go....

OK, so you don't like the book, we get that, loud and clear. Most of us have at least some books of SK that isn't our cup of tea. However, to say the fans are "run of the mill" especially to those on this board is not cool. Most "run of the mill" fans have no idea about this board and wouldn't care to sign up. Many here have been on this board for years, maybe a decade. We are readers and collectors (and not the cheesy kind, you know the ones that meet Stephen King and make him sign five books, a t-shirt, a poster so they can sell it on ebay, we actually keep our stuff and are happy to get one meeting and a signature.) This is a very unique place. The fans here are not loyal subjects or blinded by SK, but intelligent readers who have conversations and relationships that even go beyond King and his works on this board. No one here is "run of the mill."

Books by SK that I wasn't too keen on:

*The Tommyknockers
*'Salem's Lot
*The Regulator's (still haven't finished it)
*The Colorado Kid

As I've said before, it's really okay to not like something and to post about that, but it's all in the delivery. (If people bite... it's usually for a reason.)
