But a long time fan of SK. I have been reading King for years. He kept me company on long deployments while I was on active duty, and after medical issues cut my Marine Corps career short, King got me thru many midnight shifts. I have now had twenty one surgeries connected in one way or another to my military service, and due to an unexpected turn of bad luck, and a bad fall, I shattered my right femur in mid september. Before the fall, I could use my cane for short distances, a walker for middle ranges, but the dreaded chair to wheel around for day trips.

I am now stuck in either my recliner or the wheelchair for some time. I have been working my way thru the King line up once again. I have read most of his work a half dozen times over the years... but I read all the time and the anesthesia from my last three major surgeries has affected my memory... I would hesitate to call myself a King historian or expert of any note. I'm just a fan.

Thanks Dana Jean.

Unfortunately, I will always be both a Marine, and broken. But, if I could go back, I wouldn't change a thing. :encouragement: I could never have survived a career behind a desk five days a week, same thing, week in, week out.

The day I fell, I heard the sound the leg made when it broke, and felt the right foot turn ninety degrees to the right. (Adding a spiral fracture from just above the knee to just below the hip.) Doc says full recovery is eighteen months from the fall.

Yet, I am thankful. It could have been my neck that snapped. :culpability:. While I was in the veterans hospital for those long weeks, there was another vet that had fallen on his deck the same week as I, but shattered two discs in his back. The docs are "very" hopeful that in time they can get him the use of at least one hand back.

I wake up grateful every morning, work hard in physical therapy, and appreciate every day as it was a bonus. If the therapy doesn't work, and I stay I stay in the chair, I'll still be =D.

I'll adapt and overcome, as they say.
Semper fi.

Thanks again for the welcome.

Welcome A Broken Ol Marine, I hope you are not in constant pain, that'll really grind you down. I'm one of the desk jockeys out there, you'd be amazed at what some people can put up with in the cubicle world, but this life of quiet desperation is nothing compared to putting your life on the line for a cause you believe in (or your superiors believe in anyway). I wish you peace and a fast recovery. All the best, mal.

Welcome to this happy home. I understand how Steve got you through some hard times....I get re-occuring cancer and I depended on his writings, too. I am Canadian but my father was in the forces in the USA and my brother was, too. I appreciate everything you have done for your country. God bless you.

:peace:Hello, sorry I'm a little late welcoming you. Thank you for your service and for sharing your story. It's funny, my dad was a navy man, but I am not familiar with military lingo- you guys say the Crucible, I think - Arthur Miller.
I imagine it's some jobs of grueling initiative boot camp? I should probably google first, lest I look all the fool for saying this.
Welcome

Thanks to you all. As a long time King fan, I have been reading the forum to pass the time as I sit and stare at the walls, and one thing is crystal clear. There are friends here, and there are those who really don't get along...

Yup, it's one big family. I'm thinking after a time the gang will see where I fit in the pecking order. :nerd:

=D That's funny. My daughters growing up, were afraid of THAT "IT" cover on my end table and therefore, afraid of raingutters for the rest of their young lives. The oldest of the three still walks wide around them. When they changed to the Pennywise cover on later editions.. their reaction was, "Meh."

They found Pennywise terrifying... don't get me wrong. But the cover?
Meh.
