"you can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar" (...) Personally, the way you're coming across, I'm not sure I'd want to pass the information on
It was tone mainly, but perhaps something has simply been lost in translation? :)
. . . Well maybe I should have made this clear beforehand: I didn't come with the intention of gaining anything here, I just thought I'd help with a lingering error in one book by an author I enjoy reading.
I was not begging for personal attention or any benefit from this. Should anyone decide not to take my observation into account just because of the way I express(ed) myself, there's not much I can do about it; if they won't they just won't, the error will remain and none of this will deter me from reading on Stephen King's books (I have tons of his still waiting) anyway. :)

The thing is, I still don't get what I did wrong, whom I might have hurt or how or anything, so there's no way I can amend this; as a consequence I won't impose my gauche wording on the forum any longer, since I don't seem to get the rules according to which it is operated.
Last I want to thank again for the friendly welcomes. I think it was a pleasant--if short-lived-- experience.

First, I want to make it clear that I wasn't speaking for Ms. Mod, that was my impression of the way you'd come across. What she chooses to pass on is nothing to do with me, that's her choice--I was merely stating that if it was my choice, based on what I'd read in your subsequent messages (not in your first few posts) I probably wouldn't have taken the extra time, that's all.

But I'll say again, perhaps something was lost in translation (the Internet can be a difficult medium) and if this is so, then I apologise for my previous comment.

I will when I get something I deem worth sharing (or asking, etc.) Thanks for the warmth of your welcome anyway!
I never wrote the word never existed! I mentioned the fact that St. King wrote « The French for left, bastardized from the Latin, is la sinistre » when this should have read « Five centuries ago the French for left, bastardized from the Latin, was la sinistre ». So you're proving my point exactly: these days "sinistre" has absolutely no actual connexion whatsoever with "gauche".

What I was trying to point out was that technically Stephen had the etymology correct. I do understand your point that taken out of context it would appear that he is saying that the French still use that as the word for left and you are trying to clarify that it is no longer used. I will pass along your comments but then it's up to him whether he wants to change it and even if he does, it would not happen until a subsequent printing--if there is one. The publishers will not spend the money to release a new printing just to fix a mistake such as this.

Well, France is smaller than the US but quite bigger than Bangor, Maine, and all the French do not dwell in Paris ;), so no I didn't go to Paris to meet him (which would probably not have happened anyway--at best I might have hoped to het a glimpse of the man, having no way to get nearer to him). Then again he featured in some TV shows, one of which I downloaded but haven't watched yet (because I usually don't watch TV live plus I boycott the host as he once was very enthusiastic about a female write guest of his without ever mentioning she was his wife--well that's another problem altogether).
On the other hand I just don't know what I could possibly have told Mr King, has I had a chance to talk to him--anything worth hearing I mean...

I have been to Nice (in 1995 on a long range trainer with the military) so I am aware of the size of your country.

We actually took a car trip from Germany in the 80s (my then husband was in the Canadian military and so was I). We drove down through France and I think the guards at the border were interested to see that, although I was Canadian, my maiden name at that time was "Bertrand". I took a six month French course (in Canada at St. Jean in Quebec) and I realize that your Parisian French is quite different from what they have over here.

I still say welcome anyway. You may not be an absolute King fan or "Kingaholic" (just kidding) but you are still welcome to come here and discuss things.

Check out all the different threads. It is not all joking etc. Some people enjoy discussing politics, religion, whatever... Have a great day over there!

Did you get a good laugh out of my "stereotypical" picture?! =D

p.s. If you ever get a chance to travel, come to Canada and check out Quebec - it is a lovely province to visit! :cheerful:

Whoa! - the only rules are to be respectful to each other, that's all! If you enjoy discussing King's books (and not just the errors found therein) then come on back and enjoy the board. I find it a much better place than something like "Facebook" xD:laugh::m_adore: (the majority of us here are adults, even if we sometimes acts like kids) :tounge::reading:

Just for the heck of it, I looked up the etymology of sinister.

I don't think Mod was trying to start something.

I wonder if this is related to that expression about the left hand (or was it the right?) not knowing what the right hand is doing? Isn't there a...an idea that left-handed folk are nefarious? Was Leland Gaunt left-handed? The Left Hand of Darkness... dunno, read that one, but years ago.

I think most get that your initial post, Genug, was an attempt to be helpful. Thank you for the information. Please understand that in the past not everyone who logged on to provide information about an error had good intentions. It's obvious that you care about words and the meaning of words. I like that...I think most people here like. It's unfortunate that a misunderstanding developed. I know I've learned a lot from people from around the world who log in here and post. We need more of that. We're all neighbors and we should communicate more. Check out the threads about the stories and see if there's anything you could add. Like maybe you found some things interesting about the number of characters in King's story whose roots can be traced back to France. Here in the U.P. there are a number of people whose grandparents came from France...and it was only recently...perhaps here on the board...that I learned that the winter wool watch caps we wear...that we call a "chook"...is actually French in origin. Too, Chippewa, the French word for the Ojibway people, is a mispronunciation of their name.

We can't all get it right all the time. We make mistakes. Please forgive us any misunderstanding.

So what I get from this whole conversation is that you'd be satisfied with the addition of "Old" in front of "French" in Mr. King's sentence...I'm sure the publishers will get right on that! :)

Another mistake( in my opinion) is King saying that the portrayal of Ripley's character in the movie of 1979 had something sexist about it. He sites two scenes: One at the end where Ripley takes off her clothes down to her panties and a singlet while she's in the escape pod. There was nothing sexist about this scene in my opinion because she has to get in the spacesuit hanging in the closet thing. Maybe she couldn't get into the spacesuit with her long pants etc. Also, we know that the alien has male human characteristics because it burst from the chest of Kane (John Hurt) and then we get an insinuation that the alien rapes the the Lambert female character (Cartwright) later on so it is legitimate in my opinion to have her clad that way at the end. The other point King makes is that it is somehow stupid that Ripley at the end goes and tries to find her cat which is housed in a cat container. I think this show that Ripley is loyal to something she loves. It has nothing to do with someone's gender. Just like if Ripley had been a man and went to find his dog at the end, none would say that was showing the character is a sexist light. I agree with King's assessment of the movie The Cat People, which I saw on television late at night (possibly after a few beers) about five years ago and the scene he mentions that takes place in Central Park, because it looked so fake, I lost interest in the movie straight away. Another thing I sought of didn't agree with him( but know where he's coming from) is King's assessment of the movie The Thing (from Another World).
