This has probably come up before, but I can't remember so here goes. When Red finds the letter from Andy did he put the box and cash there prior to his incarceration and the letter there later? Or did he put all of it there after his escape? My husband and I were watching it the other night and had a tipsy discussion about this and really couldn't agree. Thoughts please.

I haven't read the story, have only seen the movie. If the scenario is the same, then I think the idea that Andy put it there prior to his being incarcerated unlikely, since Andy's persona had been that of a banker, someone busy with life, probably not feeling the need to hide just-in-case money. Of course, it's possible that he buried it years before, but now we're getting into pure speculation, and what's the point of doing that?

SPOILER][/SPOILER]I think Andy was thinking of the place before he escaped, as it seemed to hold fond memories for him. I think he would have had to stop by there after he cashed out all the accounts after he escaped and left the money and letter for Red to find later, since he had no idea when Red would actually get out of prison. It looks like the tin box had been there for a while under the rocks when Red finds it, so although I don't think the movie actually says how long it is after Andy escapes that Red gets paroled, it seems that it may have been a few more months or even years. Ms. Mod, or Flake, either I'm not using the spoiler function correctly or it is not working on this end. I'm thinking the former is more likely than the latter. Sorry about this.

"And at the north end of this particular hayfield there's a rock wall, right out of a Robert Frost poem. And somewhere along the base of that wall is arock that has no business in a Maine hayfield. It's a piece of volcanic glass, and until 1947 it was a paperweight on my office desk. My friend Jim put it in that wall. There's a key underneath it. The key opens a safe deposit box in the Portland branch of the Casco Bank"

Hope this answers your question.

The money in the safety deposit box is Andy's money that he had when he sold all his stock, shortly after being accused of murder. His friend Jim set up Andy's alias "Peter Stevens" for him. Jim died 6 years prior to Andy's escape.

Right at the end of the book, Andy and Red go out on the boat and it sinks. There's just a couple of planks left, only room for one of them. I won't spoil it by telling you which one survives Frank.
...he survives until he reaches a desert island, and realizing he has no supplies-resorts to self-cannibalization....
