The Tirana from the books is described in Robin Furth's Concordance as one of the Can-Toi. This is the text from her entry in the Concordance:

TIRANA: When we meet this obese low woman in the Dixie Pig, she is wearing a strapless, silver evening dress. Detta Walker rips off her mask and exposes the rat beneath. VI: 365-71, VII: 13-15, VII: 25.
-------------------------

I don't have any more information than you do at the moment as to why/how this character is going to fit into the movie but will try to find out. I might not be able to release anything more if the producers do not want that information to go out publicly yet, though.

And in classic Hollywood "wisdom" she is now an Australian Supermodel who apparently is a lead in the film.

So...Abbey Lee needs to gain a bit of weight before filming.:rofl::rofl:

No King movie has ever been nominated for an Oscar has it? Is that what this is about? (Rhetorical question. Not expecting an answer.)

I think what bothers me most is I always considered Dark Tower to be Mr. King's Magnum Opus. And if it was, I can't imagine him sitting back and feeling OK about it being completely rewritten. And yet, I hope he is OK about it. I imagine a book much like one's child. We watch our children grow up, and we love them and protect them. I imagine to watch the characters of your book and the story you lovingly wrote, to watch it get ripped to shreds and become only a shadow of itself would hurt. Deeply hurt. So, I truly hope he is agreeable to these changes. He has brought pleasure to many through his work. He has been the escape I needed when there were some horrible things I was living through. So, I don't want him feeling bad about what is happening to his characters.

But, either way, it's not likely I'll be watching it.

I would be okay with the Low Men being introduced earlier in the movies, to streamline them a bit. It always kind of bothered me that they were such a significant presence in the later books after having been absent from the earlier ones. And SK always says he sees the series as still a work in progress, which means some streamlining would be in keeping with his vision. For example, if the filmmakers wanted to change how a certain long-running character is written out of the tale, I'd be okay with that. So adding some of the low men as minor adversaries along the way wouldn't be so bad. Maybe the "female lead" thing was an extrapolation by the writer of the article and not a fact. There's still hope for a reasonable explanation, guys. Have faith in our guy.

Like I said before, I do not watch tv or movies. I missed most of the stuff written by Uncle Steve. I just read the works and that was it. I thought I might make an exception with The Dark Tower. After reading about where this is heading, I have changed my mind. Nevermind the fact that Hollywood will take license with any work, this is The Tower....this is different. We have been reading it for over twenty bloody years. They should have taken that into consideration. It would be like making a movie about Christ on the cross and ending it differently. I will never watch this.

I think you kind of hit the nail on the head. While all books made into films irk me when they are rewritten and/or butchered, this series is different. The Dark Tower was a serious investment on all of our parts. We invested in these characters, the conflicts, the worlds, and even the time it took (and the waits between books). Those of us who are fans of it, know the story like the back of our hands. We revisit it. It was already done right, so rewriting it is tantamount to peeing on the Alamo, wiping your rear with the Constitution, or feeling that Rembrandt in the museum needs a touch of spray paint to give it that extra something. "BAM! Hit it with the spice weasel."

No conversion from text to cinema is going to be perfect. There are things which must change. Even the Harry Potter series, which is far less difficult to do a treatment of than Sai King's work, required alterations. The difference, however, is they didn't rewrite the story. They attempted to remain true to it, and did manage to capture its spirit. While the vote isn't out yet nor the film even made, I don't get that sense here. They are already rewriting the story, altering the characters, and making new ones. This was HORRIBLE in the Hobbit movies, but I suspect that is exactly the kind of treatment we are going to get. I've said it before, and I'm sure I'll say it again. They can't take the books from me. If they do this, let it die a horrible death at the box office.

No matter what they do in the movie, the books will always be the one and only journey. It remains written/ Within these written words, the reader visualizes the character as describe by SK. We become one with them. We travel and follow the beams path.

In my mind, when and if changes are made(as I am reading) it will become another journey-- one this constant reader will not take. I am one of those who took the journey, book by book, waiting on the mono forever. Following the Tet- becoming part of the Tet. The journey is taken again each Fall. If this project proceeds, I shall sit and read the books- the moving pictures will play within my minds eye, not on a movie screen. All will be as it was written.

Rhetorical or not I can't resist. Shawshank was nominated for multiple Oscars including Best Picture, Best Actor and Best Screenplay. The Best Actor nomination was for Morgan Freeman playing the character of Red, who I believe is white in the book.

I'm trying to balance my deep investment in this epic with the desire to keep from being one of those tyrannical fans that thinks the writer owes me something.

It's more than just some abstract artistic opinion - my heart is involved, and the small child in me who first discovered how far away from myself a book could take me is afraid of being hurt by my hero. I want to scream and cry until it's fixed and the Australian supermodel, lovely as she is, is sent away.

I'll stay the course, though. For sai King I always do.

I don't recall Red's race mattering to the story though.

Thanks for reminding me about Shawshank. I had forgotten. :)

I say we make Pere Callahan be the star, only have him played by Sinead O'Conner (ask yer parents, kids), and instead of guns (heaven forbid), the Tet can carry mystical tasers. Oy should be a cat, because, you know, everyone loves cat videos these days. Have the whole thing take place in Cuba, before the revolution, set to an all techno score by The Crystal Method. Maybe Papa John could direct?

And, really, Dark Tower is such a depressing title. How about, TOWER: Search For The Golden Thimble?

I say we start a petition to get Molly Ringwald to play every single female part in the entire series of movies/television episode/etc. Heck, she could play every single part in the entire story- male or female- she is that good......
