Hi guys, first of all:
Happy New Year from Brazil!!

Just finished my reading on Rage and there are several questions on my mind.
First thing which is knocking my head is:

“SM L DK, HOT ****, TOMMY '73”

Do you guys know the meaning of this phrase? Read again trying to find any sense but can’t.
The big problem with the phrase is the words “SM L DK” and who is “TOMMY”?

Hugs,
Raposo

I made a search on my PDF file and there's no Tommy on the Rage.
But you found an awesome thing if this Tommy belongs to Carrie... Tommy Ross...

“SM L DK, HOT ****, TOMMY '73” is written on the surface of a desk on Placerville High School, do you know if there's any reference on Carrie if Tommy Ross studied there?

I wondered if it had something to do with the movie Tommy...that deaf dumb and blind kid, sure plays a mean game of ball...from '75...although there is a Jaws reference somewhere in the story as well and that's from '75, too. Seems like there could be some thematic similarities between the movie and this story. But then, too, maybe Tommy is Tommy and he scratched his name in the desk top along with some other letters...or maybe someone else started a line of dialogue...you ever see that? I have...and another continued the thread but off on a tangent.

Hi, yes there are two Jaws references on the book, the first one is on the paragraph right after the "SM L DK, HOT ****, TOMMY '73"...
Man, I think that this thing will have no solution, and maybe this is part of the magic, to keep this phrase on the imagination of what's the real meaning.

Now I have another doubt regarding the name "Ferd", this is how Joe calls Charlie when wrote him. Is it a type of slang or acronym? Can't find this word/name in any dictionary... Here is the phrase:

'Well, guess that's all for now. I hope they are treating you right, Ferd, as you've got to be out of there as
soon as they'll let you.'

Her first name doesn't appears on the book, but here it is a nice try... You mean the receptionist "in love" with one of Charlie's classmates... Who knows. Maybe just a joke wrote by 'Tommy'
About Tommy being Tom Decker? I believe it isn't probable... He's brother of Charlie's father.

There is an urban dictionary definition...but don't know if it applies. Too, if you've read Rose Madder, you recall the Ferdinand the Bull connection there...the bull who'd rather smell flowers. So is a "Ferd" one who goes against the accepted grain? Maybe just a nickname used among friends? I wondered if it could have some connection to The Postman Always Rings Twice...but appears not...haven't read that one, read a brief description on Wiki.

I haven't a clue as to what it means, but doing a Google search I found 2 hits that yielded the whole text of the book online. I have not read this book in years and it is one of the few things I do not own. Now I know what to read next!
