Yes but Hollywood can ugly up anyone. Look what they did to Charlize Theron for monster.
True, but there's still the age thing. I really don't think whoever plays Roland should be any younger than 40, and that's absolutely at the youngest. Preferably closer to 50.

Jon Hamm gets my vote. Looks quite a bit like Roland to me;

If there's an actor that looks more like Roland than Jon Hamm, I'd love to see him...

Part of the problem is that illustration doesn't look like Roland. It looks like Clint Eastwood, and yes, I know Clint was who Roland was partially based on, but Roland doesn't look that...clean. I know that make-up can be employed.

But my biggest problem with Hamm is the same problem I've had with a majority of the actors we've seen mentioned for this project; they're too well-known. I don't want to see an A-lister playing Roland (and Hamm is very well-known thanks to Mad Men). I want to see a situation similar to when Hugh Jackman was cast as Wolverine, or better yet, when Christopher Reeve was hired as Superman. These guys were not well-known actors, and thus, they became Wolverine and Superman in the minds of viewers. They didn't see some famous actor playing Wolvie or Supes, they saw Wolvie and Supes.

Similarly, Viggo Mortensen was a lesser-known actor who became Aragorn in the minds of viewers. Ian McKellen was slightly more well-known thanks to X-Men, but still, if Sean Connery had accepted the role, people would have seen Sean Connery as Gandalf. As it was, they saw Gandalf.

I don't want to see Jon Hamm as Roland, or Christian Bale as Roland, or Russell Crowe as Roland. I want to see Roland.

Let's let Roland live between the pages of Mr. King's books. Everyone has their own image of Roland and the other DT characters in their mind. My idea and mental images of Roland, Eddie, Susannah, Jake, Oy, mid-world, Gilead, The Dark Tower itself.....goes back to 1982. No amount of thought that goes into the casting of this movie is going to match up to that. The same problem existed for the LOTR series. The movies were ok, but so much was left out of the books that they became snapshot shells of what the books actually contained. The Dark Tower series is so rich, spanning across so many landscapes and time, that I just don't believe anyone or any medium other than Mr. King's words will ever be able to do The Dark Tower justice. Not everything needs to be converted to visual image even in this day and age...jmho:)
Agreed. There isn't a way to pull off this series on film. I'm happy with my mind movies (I envision Roland dancing the commala, and no one will ever measure up).

Thanks. I do have a thread there as well, but as this was specifically about showing Mugwomp someone who looked more like Roland, I figured I'd mention it here too.
I understand and it was in context with the thread but better to mention it without the link and let people find their way there if they want just so that we can keep the Self-Promotion area for what it was intended. What I could do if you like is put a link to your thread in Self-Promotion rather than directly to the blog.

They need to figure out a way to get Bradley Cooper's eyes, but the rest of him isn't right, he needs to be haggard and tough and less friendly looking. Maybe he should get addicted to the Tower for a few thousand years and then he'd look right.

What about Tom Hiddleston? He has blue eyes and I think if you rough him up he would make a good Roland
