I went to the movie theater to see "Angry Birds" with the kids last week and was so surprised to see a scene from The Shining. The birds opened a door in the piggy's castle and there was a hallway with (piggy) twins holding hands as shown in Kubrick's The Shining.

Who would put that in a kid's movie? I thought it was odd and obviously only adults would get that!

I would have said there are lots of jokes put into kids' films to keep their grown up slaves entertained.

Loads of grown up stuff for example in Shrek and the Lego Movie worked on a completely different level for grown ups I would say.

I'm a big fan of it.

It's called 'crossover' or 'mass appeal'. Most of the animated movies aimed at the kiddies now include references that only adults would get. I remember watching the second Tim Burton Batman movie in a theater full of 8-12 year olds (it seemed to me that there weren't many adults in the theater with me) and how appalled I was at what was coming out of The Penguin's mouth. Certainly wasn't a kids movie to me....

One of the piggy twins crooked its finger and croaked "red rum."

King's influence on popular culture is phenomenal. To this day, I still have fun with all my friends who "don't read those stinky Stephen King books that Stef likes." They're amazed at phrases, imagery and other pop culture references that they themselves use, but weren't aware it originated from The King. Believe me, I always have fun explaining Redrum to them. Even at the office not too long ago, somebody asked me the explain the ending of the IT mini-series (the confusing scene with the spider). I couldn't lie: I told her it was sh** and not to lose any sleep over it. I started telling her about the book but she got scared. Chicks. Sigh...

That mini series was horrible. The thing that stuck out throughout the whole thing, every single time the "kids" were together, they would always have to exit a scene, place, one at a time -- like it was in their contract that they would have "their" moment one at a time. They hug someone, it was done one at a time. Watch it. Big dramatic one at a time exits all over the stinking film.

Agreed. That series is remembered mostly for Tim Curry scaring the living daylights out of entire generations. But the adaptation was mostly pitiful otherwise.
