Long days and pleasant nights, fellow fans of the King!
I come to you for help, as I'm a student doing her bachelor's project on Stephen King. Not on the works of the great master in general, but on his relationships with his publishers and editors and their contribution to his success. Unfortunately, I am neither American nor old enough to have been able to follow his career first-hand for its longer part. Maybe any of you will remember news stories, fore/afterwords to his books, interviews, any type of stories on his relationships with his publishers? Rumors will do, too, but please disclose.

I do know how to use Wikipedia and the internet in general, so I've already found quite a lot of info. It's the funny/lesser-known episodes I ask for, like the one with Bill Thompson that King describes in the afterword to Different Seasons.

I really hope to hear from you, and any kind of help will be greatly appreciated. Help a girl graduate!

Try reading my "historical context" essays at Stephen King Revisited -- some of them have information of that type.

Welcome. Yeah, the Bill Thompson relationship was the first one that came to my mind. There are a few anecdotes about Kirby McCauley, straight from King's mouth, but I can't remember in what book of interviews it is contained. (Specifically, King and Kirby talked about how some publishers dismissed those who wrote in the horror and sci-fi genre.) King dedicated Pet Sematary to him and he was his agent during that time. Try reading Feast of Fear: Conversations with Stephen King.
