"We were somewhere around Barstow on the edge of the desert when the drugs began to take hold. I remember saying something like "I feel a bit lightheaded; maybe you should drive...." And suddenly there was a terrible roar all around us and the sky was full of what looked like huge bats, all swooping and screeching and diving around the car, which was going about a hundred miles an hour with the top down to Las Vegas. And a voice was screaming "Holy Jesus! What are these go##amn animals?".....lol, enjoy this book. It's a helluva ride. I haven't read it in a while but thinking about it, I might find my copy and start it again.

Yeah.I've read Hunter Thompson over the years, old articles, etc. I really like the Kentucky Derby story/job he did. Also, Hank Chinaski (C.B.) is another favourite as well.

F&L is a great read. One of my favorites. The Rum Diary as well (although the movie is absolute rubbish). It's unfortunate that what made Thompson such a great author rendered him largely incapable of actually producing much over his career. He spent most of his last years recycling letters and articles. He lacked the discipline to actually write much in the way of a novel.

My son's name is Hunter, that ought to tell ye somethin.

Tell you what, take Wolfe's Electric Kool-Aid, Thompson's Hell's Angels, and Ed Sanders' The Family (much more fun than the courtroom snoozefest Helter Skelter), in that order, and you can see the sixties deteriorate from goodtimes to crazyville in about twelve hundred pages.
