Anybody travel a bunch or have any cool stories about venturing out into the big 'ol world?
Just moving your thread into the "Chattery Teeth" area of the MB, this is the place we tend to talk about everything. (non SK) :)

I haven't been outside of my country, but have travelled (a bit) in both the North and South islands.

Wonderful! I was extremely blessed to be born into a family with the finances to fund my travel trips. In the past year I've been to Mexico, Spain, Costa Rica, Canada, Boston, New York, Chicago, and California and we have recently relocated to a new home in Florida. My best friend's family builds resorts in Costa Rica and I'm so blessed to be able to spend weeks down there at a time for free. Being fluent in Spanish is prbably my most proud accomplishment and it's hilarious to eavesdrop on hispanic people who I can tell are talking about me then turn around and give them a knowing glance lolol

Stories. When you travel, there are definitely stories.

Our favorite trip was to Ireland. Wonderful people there. So rich with history, much of it sad, and age. We had lunch in a place that had been serving food since 1600 - about when Jamestown was established.

Our most scenic trip was to New Zealand, mostly the south island. It just might well be the prettiest place in the world. The roof of the Wellington airport was a hoot, and I bungy-jumped off the bridge where bungy jumping started.

The Alaskan tundra, the heart of Seoul, the waters off Okinawa, the dirt roads of Tequila, Mexico, the touristy but still fun falls of Ocho Rios, Jamaica, the Sydney Opera House - although we enjoyed the Toranga Zoo more - the impressiveness of Whistler in BC. And not to mention the coast-to-coast travelings of our own home country in the U.S., which one could spend a lifetime exploring.

In my opinion and experience, nothing beats travel for building a lifetime of memories.

I'm digging this thread out of mothballs because I'm super excited about my upcoming travel for this year and want to shout about it.

This month, I have just a quick corporate retreat with an extra day tacked on for fun at this place: Washington State Resort | Mountain Resort | Suncadia Resort

Then, in July, there's King Kon which will be my very first trip to Maine after a lifetime of dreaming about it. I'm sad the trip will be SO VERY SHORT but I already know I'll be back again soon...in the winter (as I may have mentioned a time or 20).

Finally, in November, I have a whirlwind trip planned with 3 nights in Prague, 3 nights in Budapest, and 3 nights in New York City. This will be my first time to both Prague and Budapest and my second trip to NYC. If anyone has suggestions of what to do in Budapest, I definitely welcome the tips! Prague and NYC are already pretty well planned out (just waiting for the Broadway announcements to pack my days in New York with song).

Where are you all going this year?

I'd forgotten about this thread. Since it was started, I've had a bit more travel.

Lagos, Nigeria, 2016.

In 2017:
Oslo, Norway. Connected through Munich.
Taipei, Taiwan, two or three times.
Hong Kong, three times.
Hsinchu, Taiwan.
Seoul, SK, three times in '17 and just got back from my first trip there this year.
Guam.
Astana, Kazakhstan. Connected through Frankurt. Then on to Taipei, connecting through Beijing. Then to Hong Kong, then home.
Zacatecas, Mexico.

Alaska cruise and train up to Denali. Came back through Vancouver.
We drove down to Arizona to meet up with the son-in-law's family. We AirBnB'd it and cooked up Thanksgiving for everyone.
Las Vegas.

Impressive list! That's a lot to pack into a year! Norway is on my list. What were your highlights?

A lot of it was working, so there's not always time to see the sights.

Oslo, definitely cool - and expensive!! - making me wish I could have gotten out to the countryside.

Kazakhstan was friendly and modern. The makers of "Borat" should be sued.

Nigeria, nice people except the ones who weren't. Just getting through the Lagos airport was the most harrowing part. It's not a tourist place.

I always enjoy working in Seoul. Clean, well-ordered with transportation, good food, relatively inexpensive, and customer service is off the charts. A side trip to the DMZ is well worth it.

Taiwan, very friendly. And hot when I was there. Tons of scooters. Rode the bullet train at something like 177 mph. Very smooth until the train going the other way passes at the same speed just inches away.

Hong Kong, really a melting pot of a city. Very diverse. Immense skyscrapers. I just enjoy walking the streets there and going into a little restaurant where I can't read anything.

If you can avoid connecting in Beijing, please do. That was not a good experience.

Guam was hot, generic, and kind of expensive. Nice beach, which would have been better if I were a beach guy.

Loved the Alaska cruise, going to little ports on the Inside Passage and the train up to Denali.

Zacatecas. Just a normal mid-sized town where, it turns out, you can buy a very tasty and filling lunch for two, complete with (non-alcohol) drinks, add a tip, and have it come out to $2.72. Wow.

Mexico City does not have a hugely efficient airport, there was a layer of pollution haze over it, and I find the active volcano overlooking it.... disturbing.

Let me try to get some pics together.

I went on a long range trainer and saw the Seychelles, Holland (which was very nice), Islamabad in Pakistan, Nairobi (Kenya), Crete, and a one night stop in Nice, France. We also spent a night on Rhodos Island in Greece.

This was a trip paid for by the military and I went as a "deserving serviceperson". Good thing I'm able to sleep on a Herc! But that was a long time ago [1995].

Oh yeah - we broke down and ended up in what was once Saudi Arabia (Kuwait).

And we also had to stop for repairs in Lyneham England as there is a big Herc base there.

Ooops - my mistake - Kuwait borders Saudi Arabia :facepalm_smiley:

Anyway they are pretty dang rich there!
