Being in the company of Bradbury and Ackerman in their own environments was totally awesome.

Without looking I would say all of the comics I have are in color. I remember a boy with whom my sisters and I used to be friends had some black-and-white ones (and probably still does--do NOT ask!) One in particular which stood out contained a ripoff of The Turn of the Screw by Henry James. In this version, the hauntings were due to an older brother Miles and Flora did not like. They waited till he was outside in icy conditions, caused him to fall and then attacked him with knives. His death was dismissed as an accidental fall--apparently no one noticed the numerous stab wounds through not only the body but the clothing! In the end he returned as a creepy skeleton. When I went to return the comics the kid's father would not take them, claiming they would "scare" his son, and wouldn't believe his son was the one who loaned them to me, so in the end I had to take them back until I could return them to the kid personally. Does anyone else remember this comic? I also had, may still have, one containing a ripoff of D. H. Lawrence's "The Rocking Horse Winner," only this toy was a ship, not a rocking horse, and the ending was similar but appropriately altered.

People could be weird about comics back then. I had an aunt, real holly roller, who would always swipe my comics when I wasn't looking and burn em. I made sure never to take any to her house or they'd wind up in the incinerator. Had an ancient old neighbor who always warned me that my comics would rot my brain.

Comics had a bad reputation for years.

I know this is a thread dedicated to trading, but I have to mention that horror comics are awesome (as well as sci-fi comics). May have mentioned this to Muskrat/etc. before that I have been enjoying the reprints Chamber of Chills, Haunted Horror, etc. Loved the special Halloween issue of the latter. I also enjoy buying a couple horror comics whenever I am at the comic book store. Only thing I don't like is worrying about the used condition. I especially hate any moldy smells. I hope there is nothing toxic associated with used topics (there was a Cracked magazine I came across a few weeks ago that I really, really wanted but decided against because it looked too dirty; anyone else worry about getting sick from a comic book?). Too bad one couldn't just order up new issues of old comics.

S'why I've been going the reprint route these days. They're reprinting everything, in a wide variety of formats--hardback, trade PB, slipcased collectors edition, etc. Stuff you don't have to handle with kid gloves, and less risk of infection. And they look great on the shelf.

The Simpsons has missed a rich opportunity by not adapting The Turn of the Screw for one of their "Treehouse of Horror" Halloween specials!
