If you are afraid of offending people then do not post in hot topics. Everyone has an opinion, not all agree. If you do post, then just say what you believe and defend it, if necessary, regardless of the blowback. Some folks will go way out of their way to be offended. I lurk in the hot topics area from time to time and I've found that, for the most part, it's mostly debate and opinion and very little anger. Myself, I've got the apolitical blues but I'll leave with this...I think Donald Trump won the election because folks were tired of the status quo where nothing ever changed and there seemed to be no progress, whether a Democrat or a Republican was at the helm. Maximizing profits and finding new ways to extract capital seems to be the roadblock we've hit as a society. We have to get back to the basics and stop fooling ourselves that the latest pick of several cell phones on the market is really important, as the news coverage would lead us to believe...unless the reports and news are all geared to shareholders (the few) and not society in general (the many). Oh...SpongeBob Squarepants is on...gotta run!

I think I'll leave politics out of my love for Stephen King. :)

Give it time......;;D Actually we are a pretty darn good bunch of folken here. I am a member on only one other group (prince.org) and this place is the bestest!

:) I so agree. I am on FB but not that much and Twitter but not that much. I love this place--I mean--you all are SK fans--what could be better? I post political stuff on FB and I think I should stick to that.

Wow, John--thank you so much! I sure try to be respectful of people as I hope people respect my views. I have never felt you disrespected me and your reply here means much to me.

John's response to you is honorable as well. Being reasonable is a hallmark that more folks should reach for.

I can't tell you how often friends and family get straight up angry and unreasonable when discussing politics.

Thanks to you both.

I really love this place because here, people can discuss all kinds of topics but still be respectful. And i definitely agree, John's response was as honorable as it could be. This is so refreshing!

There is a banner notice at the top of the page just above the title of whatever thread you're in that announces the hours for Hot Topics, provides a link for the User Guide, and when necessary, closings for the Board when I'm on vacation.
Thank you so much. I was all screwed up because we just flew to the W. Coast. I've got it now--and thank you for the reminder. I hope you are relaxing after the busy tour. I had so much fun in Brooklyn!

I enjoy posting politics here too, and except for maybe another closed place, it's the only place I do. Mostly. I have friends, family, and colleagues of all different persuasions on Facebook, and it's so easy to get crosswise with somebody.

I know that when a business contact on Facebook is on a political rant that I think is quite irrational and unfounded, I start second-guessing whether I should be tossing business that person's way. If they're that angry, that unreasonable, and that unmindful of what they say in public, do I want to send clients to them?

I don't even blog my political leanings, much, for the same reason. But this is my haven for that kind of expression.

It's torn families apart too. My mother is deceased (R.I.P.) but she raised me to be a huge leftie and an environmentalist. She was very into politics and raised me with a lot of awareness with the political system. She ran and won different offices on the local level (she was our town's mayor for several years and worked on the city commission). It was like living politics with her. My sister agrees with me because my Mom had a huge influence on her as well--also for feminism too--my mom was a HUGE feminist. So that was cool. I think she instilled that passion in me.
