This is going to sound weird here but Im fairly new to reading Stephen Kings books and I have a pre teen daughter and son who I feel would benefit from his vivid, intense way of writing but they both frighten easily and have had real life trauma from the type of real life characters that King writes about so I dont think will want their heads filled with macabre tales.

Id like them to "get a taste" for his writing style without all the "blood and guts"

Can anyone tell me if Mr.King has any short stories that are more "clean" and suitable for my daughter and son?

Thanks
Austin
PS: Dont be a smart ass and tell me to have them read "Twilight"

Welcome to the Board!

Depending on what you mean by "clean," The Eyes of the Dragon is always the first one to come to mind but it does have expletives. The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon would be another but it does have some scary elements. Perhaps if you haven't already, you could give them a read first and decide whether you think they'd be suitable for your children.

Ok, no...just kidding. But jeeze, I'm wracking my brain here, and sorta coming up blank. I mean, I'm sure there are some...err...softer SK stories out there, but every one I can think of has at least one or more darker elements which a parent might find unsuitable. I mean, it's kind of like asking, "gosh, I sure would like to introduce little Suzie or Johnny to the works of William Burroughs, but doesn't he have any books that aren't about gun-toting, heroin addicted perverts?"

Maybe you should just wait until little Suzie or Johnny are older...

Welcome to the boards.
May I ask what books you have read?

I know I started with 'Salems Lot young, and it did not damage me.
(Right Tet?, Nope nothing wrong here.) A squirrell!

Carrie probably would not be good for a pre-teen girl. ?

I agree with muskrat..doesn't anyone remember flagg crushing the spider for poison, and running down the stairs with an axe to murder,in eyes of the dragon? and the girl who loved tom Gordon, similiar stuff..maybe start off with JK Rowlings series, the first book or two are not rough at all,and eventually introduce them to the rest..also Tolkien's The Hobbit is very easy to introduce the little ones to ideas of violence and horror without actually scaring them..

Try the Twilight series first.

I got the impression he likes his kids.

I let my preteen read Eyes of the Dragon, and then he quickly moved on to the harder stuff. (Since he had not been a reader prior to that, I have no regrets.)

I do like the suggestion of the first few Harry Potter books and The Hobbit. (That one led to us writing in code.)

Oh hell no. All the stuff that kid's mom went thru? Getting knocked blind, domestic violence?

I mean, if we gotta wear kid gloves...
Muskrat ....didja niver read fairy tales? Lol. We have a witch who was going to fatten up two children to eat. Their parents dropped them off in the deep woods. We have a wolf who ate Grandma after he got up to the dickens with three little pigs. We have that chick from Kansas who passed out in a poppy field, I would too lol. People were whipping their children left and right. That lady in the shoe was committing child abuse.
