I've seen a few interesting and notable people die here in the past month that no one has posted about. And I was thinking, maybe we just don't want to be reminded that we all have a shelf life.

I've read 4 Toni Morrison books and hated them all....but....I love that she was a word slinger on the world stage.

I watched Oprah's Book Club sit-down with Toni the other day, repeated in her honor. And, while it didn't make me magically like her books all of a sudden, I have great respect for her journey. She was a very interesting, talented and smart woman and I can get behind that.

I have a copy of Beloved but have never read it. It's been on my TBR list for 30 years but I've never managed to read it. :) I don't know if I like her books or not but there's no denying she's an important icon. I've said this before but I'm going to read that book soon.

She's brilliant. Really.

I think her books became a victim to what was happening in my life at the time. I was a huge Oprah Book Club nerd and I was reading the classics at the same time. Can we say a whole lot of tedious dysfunction? I was so over my head drowning in molesting, abuse, violence, ignorance, neglect, affairs, muuuuurder.....It was just a damn steady diet of Prozac writing -- ugh! Book after book after book-- for a year. It was the same whiny crap. I couldn't appreciate any of it because the characters all merged into one big pool of broken, flawed, powerless people.

I finally broke free.

We jumped the shark with the dwarf in the concentration camp. (not Toni's book, but an Oprah Book Club pick)

I think that was my last straw.
