Unnecessary censorship just assassinates the idea, things being banned because groups of people were offended by them has been a problem that keeps reiterating itself

The comics code installed in the 50’s that just the completely contradicted the freedom of speech

Beatles merchandise being burned in the 60’s because of what was an albeit smarmy self-righteous comment made by John Lennon, it still was a bit too far to go to such lengths for one comment

Churches trying to ban D&D/Pokémon in the 80’s/90’s respectively because they got the idea it was promoting Satan for some reason

It’s not like the song even mentions anything rape-like, the one line seems to be taken out of context a bit too far. And PETA is just a trashy organization that is too busy attacking fictional mediums like Pokémon to try to stop actual animal abuse.

Christmas just wouldn't be the same without affected offense and affected outrage over the affected offense.

I have a friend who says, "Merry Christmas! Are we still allowed to say that?" She's been saying that for at least 20 years now.
No one gets offended over someone saying that, it’s just that “happy holidays” is more commonly used in a customer service setting because it’s more universal towards customers of all practices

This is part of an agenda that's been being pushed for a few years at least. "They" tried to ban the word "bossy" a couple years back, too. They're also banning unapproved word preferences regarding gender, such that in some states you can pay a hefty fine for refusing a person's preferred pronouns. I read in an article today that a teacher was fired from their job for accidentally referring to a new "him" as a her reflexively while attempting to help that person avoid walking into a wall.

Now there are so many people who feel okay screaming "You're not welcome, here!" over moral disagreements. Others are demanding supplication over moral philosophies. How dare you not hate the same things I hate? You're going to have to answer to me because I'm the self-declared King of the World.

Ever since the online hordes discovered the John Podesta emails on Wikileaks it's become a new weapon to scour people's social media for hints of unapproved personality types. It happened to James Gunn and more recently to Kevin Hart. Roseanne got fired for making a joke Bill Maher made 3 years ago twice. I fear the moment they turn their eyes on Stephen King for his colorful language in the past.

This banning and censoring is being done in the name of tolerance and equality but there's no tolerance for those who want to opt out. I read once that censoring things you hate is opening the door to losing everything you love. Once the door is opened it can't be shut, and rights that are removed are never returned. There's a lot of hate right now and this attempt at revisionism is evidence of it.

I miss when people were people and let each other be. There's been so much reordering in the last couple years and I don't believe it was organic in any way.

Nice read, thanks.

I have a relative who says it. And a lot of people on fb who post similar messages. I call them out on it. And I will now say Happy Holidays or Seasons Greetings. By choice.

Baby, It's Cold Outside back on CBC after chilly reception to dropping it | CBC News

"Citing audience input, CBC has reversed its decision to remove the holiday track Baby, It's Cold Outside from seasonal playlists."

"Last week, we decided to press pause to consider the different points of view on playing Baby, It's Cold Outside. Because we value our audience input, which was overwhelmingly to include the song, we have put it back on the two playlists where it had been removed," Chuck Thompson, CBC's head of public affairs, said in a statement Tuesday.

"Appreciating not everyone interprets lyrics the same way, listeners may wish to skip the song as we understand not everyone will agree with this decision."

I think it's going to happen where books by authors will be edited for stuff that is considered to be deemed 'offensive' by some group. Even if it is fiction. I read Salem's Lot recently and Larry Crockett had some interesting thoughts about Barlow and Straker's relationship. It a way to make people conform and think the way they want them to think.

I actually never knew this song until the manufactured outrage on social media reared it's ugly and sanctimonious head.

I listened to the original on YouTube, didn't equate anything I heard there with date-rape, and moved on with my life.

One of the biggest problems, and why we get this sort of retroactive clean-up, is that some people are looking at things from other eras through a modern sensitivity. We can't do that because once we begin it becomes both impossible and ridiculous. Context is everything.
I think if the song really referenced drugging a woman it wouldn't fly on super clean 1953 radio stations. And seeing how more songs now are less subtle when on the topic of stage-5 romance there's really no need to remove it because of one out of context line. Maybe she just wants the drink recipe?

Here's an interesting take on it (which I agree with):

At the time period the song was written [1944], “good girls,” especially young, unmarried girls, did not spend the night at a man’s house unsupervised. The tension in the song comes from her own desire to stay and society’s expectations that she’ll go. We see this in the organization of the song — from stopping by for a visit, to deciding to push the line by staying longer, to wanting to spend the entire night, which is really pushing the bounds of acceptability. Her beau in his repeated refrain “Baby, it’s cold outside” is offering her the excuses she needs to stay without guilt. …
Later in the song, she asks him for a comb (to fix her hair) and mentions that there’s going to be talk tomorrow – this is a song about sex, wanting it, having it, maybe having a long night of it by the fire, but it’s not a song about rape. It’s a song about the desires even good girls have. …
So let’s talk about that drink. I’ve discussed solely looking at the lyrics of the song and its internal universe so far, but I think that the line “Say, what’s in this drink” needs to be explained in a broader context to refute the idea that he spiked her drink. “Say, what’s in this drink” is a well-used phrase that was common in movies of the time period and isn’t really used in the same manner any longer. The phrase generally referred to someone saying or doing something they thought they wouldn’t in normal circumstances; it’s a nod to the idea that alcohol is “making” them do something unusual. But the joke is almost always that there is nothing in the drink. The drink is the excuse.

Snopes has a good look at the controversy.
