This is what happens when you re-read stories after a gap of decades - you discover that someone else moved into the story in the years between.
Yep.
Your older self has kicked your younger self out the way, saying, this is what this story is really about.

And it's such a tragic and scary story.
Tragic because it deals with a real-world nightmare.
And scary because it makes me wonder why more people don't go DEFCON 1 when they're caught between a rock & a hard place.
Perhaps people aren't as crazy as we think.:shh:

I can honestly say this is the only King work I had to drag myself through. I read it twice, several years apart, and wanted the ending to be similar, but come a lot sooner. If ya know what I mean.

While 'The Long Walk' is my favorite 'early' Bachman book, 'Roadwork' is probably my second favorite. For a book that was written by a very young King, he is able to get into the mind of a middle-aged man quite easily and explore the pathos of someone in that age bracket. Do I think Bart is insane? No, I think he's just someone who's been pushed to his limits and has no other way to go to get out of his situation. I think I may do a(nother) re-read of this one....

I went into reading Roadwork thinking that it wasn't going to be any good. But the more I read it, the more I enjoyed it. The ending seemed perfect for the build-up it had.
