Today is Sai King`s birthday ( Happy BD one more time, Sir! ), so it got me thinking about BD presents.
Just a few days ago it was my daughter`s 9th birthday ( 9th, that`s right, friends and neighbors, I still remember like it was yesterday when I posted a picture of her here, just a few hours after she was born ) and of course, she got loads of presents.
The one she liked the most was a present from me, I wrote a diary/ book for her, everything that happened in the year between her last BD and this one. But it`s not a classic diary, there is lots of stuff in it about our family history, who we are, where we are coming from, stories about the old country before everything went to hell ( that tale will be in another book I`ll write to her in a few years time, too early still for a child ) tales about her family she yet has to meet ( and God, I hope she gets to see my Mom while there is still time ), some thoughts of mine about life, what`s important and what`s not and so on.
It was an epic journey for me, it has been ages since I wrote something in longhand, anything, never mind something over 300 pages like this one is.
I already started a new one for her next BD, this one will be around 500 pages since she complained that she LOVES the book but is sad it`s not longer...:D

So...what was the best BD present you ever got?
Love and lights. :)

That diary will become a treasure to your daughter as she grows up and has a family of her own. Written memories last forever.

Yes, indeed.
I am and forever will be sad for my diaries that went up in flames when they burnt my house down in the war ( although I do have five saved from when I was a teenager ) but what hurts far more is that my father`s diaries met the same fate...and I never read a single one of them.
Every time I think about that, my heart bleeds, who knows how many beautiful stories I missed, how much wisdom and smart advice...God, I`d give anything to have them...
I will never stop writing for her, in this exact fashion, I started something that looks and feels really big to me and I simply can`t stop now, once that I started.
It feels very important to me to do this.

Hmmm, I think the best birthday present I ever got was my Universal Monsters 37 movie box set, but i'm really looking forward to the SK books and Phantasm box set i'm getting for my birthday this year. My birthday is October 3rd but my mom, and grandparents, and I are celebrating it this weekend.

Best birthday present for me was the 1989 Stratocaster I got from my folks when I turned 16.

I still have it. Only original thing left is the body. I had to replace the neck after it had a collision with an amp. I've swapped the pickups more times than I can count.

When I graduated college I was renting a house out from a friend. He was delaying my payments and utilities bc he knew I didn't have any flow. He said just live there and once u get a job u can start paying it down. I lived there for 2 years. I owed 12600 at the end. At my graduation dinner he handed me an envelope. He kept an accurate ledger of what i owed. At the bottom it said " Congrats, zero balance due." Unreal.

My wife bought me a dollar store plastic weekday pill holder for my statins last July, as a joke, and a single malt bottle of Scotch because she is tired of the paint thinner smell of my cheap Teachers scotch that I like. The Scotch has come and gone but I always smile when I take my daily pill. I felt pain when I read that your fathers diaries were burned and you didn't get a chance to read them. That would be pretty damn hard to get over. Your daughter is very lucky and you sound like a good man! All the best, mal.

What a great idea, Srbo! She'll treasure that forever. I gave my diaries to a friend for safe keeping. I had to put them aside a long time ago.

I think probably the very best gift I've received (that I can remember) is what the Ogre gave me this year. I was going through a terrible time a few months ago - not tragic, just dramatic changes at work and the fallout and drama got worse every day for months, it had me haggard. And I kept finding feathers - every few days I'd find a feather. I've always heard "feathers appear when angels are near". And thinking that really lifted me up. Every time I'd find one I'd get goose bumps and wonder if it was a real angel or maybe one of my beloved dead sending me a "hey, it's going to be OK" message. I was keeping the feathers on my kitchen desk at home with other collectibles, but every time someone walked past them swiftly they would float off the desk and I'd get spazzed out, worried that I would lose one. For my birthday, my Ogre made me a box that swivels around and he put a piece of styrofoam in the bottom and stuck all my feathers in it - voila: a feather box! Genius. Brilliant. Thoughtful. I love my feather box. If I could find my usb I'd share a picture of it. I admire my feathers all the time. Every now and then I find another, but seriously all thru July and some of August, feathers were all over the place around me.

Stories like this make be believe that not everything is lost, there is still hope for mankind.

My Mom gave me life
My daughter was born the day after my birthday
When I turned 16, my brother gave me a single red rose and put on one of the best fireworks displays....both became a tradition until his death
This year for my 50th, the BF gave me tix to the GNR concert......no one has ever gone to such expense just for me, so that was pretty special.
