I saw the sequel (Doctor Sleep) was on my Amazon feed and was like finnnnneee I will buy it but I have to buy the first one. So I finally read this masterpiece and was impressed. I was disappointed in both of the movies as they varied way too much from the book. I highly recommend the book. If you already saw the movie, remember it is different before you start trying think ahead and think you know what will happen next.

I actually like the kubrick version although i thought the book was better, in the movie Jack is already mad from the start.

The miniseries i thought was terrible, for the most part because the kid who played Danny Torrance was'nt a really good actor:)
I think it was the mini-series that I liked the depiction of the lady in the tub better, but either way was surprised the dates did not match up in the movie and mini-series with the book.

I liked the mini-series :) I don't think Nicholson can play anyone other than himself and who in the world thought casting Olive Oil as his wife was a good idea???

Oh and yeah.... The book was a hundred times better than either the movie or the series :)

I heartily agree!! I liked the mini-series (of course not as much as the book) much more than the Kubrick version. Wendy and Danny in that version were so annoying that I almost wanted Jack to kill them!! The books are always better.

I just finished reading this for the first time since the early '80s when I was a teenager. I've seen the Kubrick movie countless times, to the point that I couldn't remember a lot of the details of the book.
The book is actually very different from the movie. Almost nothing specific that happens in the movie happens in the book. It's almost like Kubrick just used the book as a guideline, then did the movie he wanted to do. There are a few priceless lines from the book that made it into the movie, like "I'm going to bash your brains in," and "white man's burden, Lloyd."
I like both the movie and the book, but they are probably more different than any book/movie comparison of any of King's work.

Just as a footnote, I re-read the book because I wanted to refresh my mind on Danny Torrance before I read "Doctor Sleep."

Good sequel. I went in not knowing what to expect, but it was pretty good.
