Hello everyone!

This post might be unpleasant, and it is a little long.

I am sort of a fangirl of Brady. I feel terrible about his life, and there's lust. He's in some of my nightmares. They always involve murder in some way, whether I find out what he did and tell on him, I warn someone he's after them, or he's got me cornered. Some of them are perverted, but never romantic. Everyone reading this has probably noticed a good amount of women gushing over real or fictional criminals. Hybristophilia is the sexual attraction to violent or dangerous people. There are two types: passive and aggressive. Passive is excited by someone else's crimes, but they have no desire at all to take part in them. They would never participate in any way. Aggressive is the opposite. They are aroused by someone's cruelties, and they want to be involved. They will do awful things with their partner, hide evidence or destroy it, lie for them, clean everything up, manipulate people, even lure victims in for him to beat, rape, or murder. They will also plan crimes for the person, and some will try to persuade them to do things. Hybristophilia is not well known. While many people are aware of women liking bad guys, most don't know the term for it, or why it occurs. This fetish is also a psychological disorder, and it is specific to females. Like with the majority of fetishes ending in "philia", this one has a negative reputation, and people should try to keep it hidden. Some Hybristophiliacs lose their relatives, partner, friends, reputation, or job over it. Many who talk about it with strangers or acquaintances are told they are insane or disgusting, and it keeps them from making new friends. Those who talk about it online, are harassed and reported often.

Why does Hybristophilia happen?
There are numerous reasons, I will list them from my least favorite to favorite.

Abused as a child: Some say that these women were mistreated as kids, so they grow up used to abuse, and they think it is normal.

Dad issues: Similar to above. The woman has a horrible Dad, or an absent one, and it damages her esteem. She seeks out cruel men to try to cope.

Bored with life: She doesn't feel fulfilled, and she thinks dating a cruel, mentally ill, or evil man will fix it.

Insecure: She has no self love or respect, so she aims low and clings to a criminal.

Empathy and compassion: She feels great empathy and care for others. She sees the criminal as a victim, and she wants nothing more than to support him, and do what she thinks is helping.

Nature: In ancient times, men had to hunt animals and sometimes kill other humans to survive. It isn't necessary now. I think the primal part of some women's minds confuse aggression, insanity, or evil with masculinity. Criminals are usually cunning, manipulative, forceful, and determined. These can help people get ahead in life, which can equate to a man hanging survival skills. Plenty of women lust for killers. This is because the act of taking lives tells her primal, subconscious mind that he has control and power, and he is able to protect himself and them, if they were together. It has been proven that women are attracted to the Dark Triad, Cunning, Narcissism, and Psychopathy/Sociopathy. Sociopaths and Psychopaths who do choose crime, usually end up getting lots of mail, and women fight over them.

I am a passive Hybristophiliac, and an Empath. I am enamored with one real killer, and Norman Bates as well. (The novel version, movie, and tv) Again, with Brady, I don't have any warm and fuzzy feelings. There's only lust, empathy, and pity. I know firsthand about losing people over speaking my mind, and being hated online. I knew they would happen, but I don't like hiding things, I see it as deceitful. If any of you who see this are attracted to any real of fictional criminals, I hope you don't tell people you know. It will be easier if you avoid being labeled as sick, and having people walk out of your life because they think it means you are evil, and you will hurt someone.
....definitely a straight up post, and props for that....I won't pretend to understand the fascination as you have described it-but you are still welcome here....no judgement....for my part, I am on the opposite end of the spectrum.....I want to slowly torture, then dispatch these monsters.....

I think part of the reason I like some of Stephen King's villains so much is because he writes them so well. Brady in particular is a three-dimensional character, it's kind of understandable that he ended up the way he did. I'm not saying he should have committed the crimes that he did, but I'm in the "empathy and compassion" category, I suppose. As far as real killers go, I've never been attracted to any or even felt that much compassion for them, but definitely gruesome fascination. I used to have nightmares about Jeffrey Dahmer, even though I never thought about him much when I was awake. And I've read a lot about Paul Bernardo and Karla Homolka, and wish I hadn't. They make Brady look like a prince among men.

I'm not in a high level of Hybristophilia. I'm so interested much at criminals because they always bring a sort of interesting backstories (I'm a big fan of Detective, Crime, Psychological Horror and Dark Side Fictions and Stories) because most of their stories will make you sympathize to them.
in Brady's case, my affection was very different compared to my affection to the other Criminals (eg. Torso Murderer, H.H.Holmes and The Zodiac Killer). Because Brady was that type of person that i would say "awww, that's pretty horrible story you got there, come, lemme give you a hug even you'll just kill me". The only Person who knew me personally about my affection to the criminals and other people who has a character trait as same as Brady was my Male Buddy who is always with me.

Highly emphasize the last part of your post because that is true. i once tell my classmate about how i love Brady when i'm talking to her about Mr. Mercedes and she just labeled me "Disgusting". That ends my interaction to her. Right now i always avoid her and at vice versa. Again, it is my Male Buddy, that only Person who knows about my criminal affection. and He Accepts me a lot, maybe because aside that he is actually my best friend, he actually has a High Level kind of Sadistic Attitude

Thanks for the welcome and deciding not to judge! You might not believe it, but I share your hatred. The exception being the real one I'm interested in, even though I know rationally that he's no better than any of the others. (And Norman if you count fiction) I sometimes feel attracted to murderers, yet I still resent them and hope they die. It's terrible when some become killers after childhood trauma, but it doesn't excuse their actions. I have conflicting feelings at times, because I am extremely soft and emotional, but I'm able to think logically too.

I feel empathy for him too, while also thinking he should be dead. The funny thing about you mentioning Homolka and Bernardo, is that the killer I'm interested in is obsessed with the two, especially Karla. His name is Luka Magnotta. Have you heard of him?

I'm sorry she called you disgusting! Maybe if she had actually talked to you about it instead of judging right away, she would have been able to understand why you feel the way you do. At least it might have gotten her to see that there's nothing wrong with you. I think that if she is truly your friend, she will not let this ruin everything. A real friend will accept you, even when they dislike something about you. Besides, it's not like you said you want to hurt others, all you did was express concern for someone who has been hurt.

It will be easier if you avoid being labeled as sick, and having people walk out of your life because they think it means you are evil, and you will hurt someone.

I'm familiar with the term because I am a psychologist. I have never been attracted to a psychotic person who commits violent crimes against people--and I am a survivor of childhood abuse. But I have been self-destructive in other ways (8 years of heroin addiction, years in the sex industry, cutting myself, and multiple suicide attempts), so I understand what you mean about taking the abuse on themselves when the original abuser is gone.

Here's my take on this, I don't think it is healthy for women to pursue these kinds of relationships. I really think that if a woman is attracted to or marries a rapist or murderer (in prison or out) then there is something wrong with her own stability. I found the key to ending my own destructive tendencies through the help of a great therapist--and you have to find someone who is on your wavelength but I needed someone to help me sort out why these things had happened to me and how I could overcome the compulsion I had to end my life (either through an accident (OD or via disease) or through direct action on my part. Hybristophilia is not a healthy place to be in real life. To me, it means that a person is too insecure with her/himself to find a normal relationship with a healthy person who loves, respects, and has compassion not just for you but for humankind itself.

Finally, I see that Hybristophiliacs can also enable those with sick desires to inflict pain or death on another human being. This is the worst of all because without knowing it, a person could be an accessory to these crimes (probably not legally, but morally for sure).

Now it is a different story if you love a villain in a book. I have loved many of King's villains but not in a lustful way. I loved the dark man/walking dude/Randall Flagg but I never felt lust for him. The same was true for John Rainbird (who I think is one of King's most brilliant villains)--but again, I didn't feel lust.

As a psychologist, I just cannot help but think that these relationships just aren't healthy at all.

I also want to mention that I am married to the most kind, compassionate, respectful, intelligent and caring human being in the world. I could never love someone who inflicted pain upon others. Not even in literature. I've known too many abusive men to be attracted to that now. But I also am sorry that you've been insulted. No one should do that.

I have enormous compassion for you. And I wish you all the best. And I really hope this didn't come across as condescending. I hope you can understand why I have strong feelings on this type of thing. It hits very close to home. :love_heart:

Okay, I'm late to the party here, I hope you still check this post but I'm right on board with you! I LOVE LOVE LOVE Brady Hartsfield, to the point of having some rather unseemly fantasies about him <blush>. I think of him as the thought bubble over everyone's head: "I want chawww-klit!" the little boy brays. "And I want it with springles!" You got it, you fatass little creep, Brady thinks. Who among us hasn't thought things like that? Lol And then he puts on his charming act: "You got it, little buddy. One chocolate with sprinkles coming right up. How was school? Get any As?" Everyone, whether they admit it or not, has had mean thoughts, has silently verbally abused someone, has pictured smacking the **** out of someone, or shoving them, running them over with their cars, and of course we usually don't act on them. I'm not defending what he did, but I can understand how he got to that point. Stephen King is so gifted at giving every character a unique and true voice, it's hard to not love some of his antagonists as much or more than the protagonist. I harbor hope that Brady was somehow able to find another drone and will make another appearance.
That was beautiful, absoulutely beautiful. Im sure Brady is watching you from the void(or his new proxy) giving you his middle finger of approval!LOL

I've never heard of him, he sounds like a sick b*stard! I've been binge watching "Criminal Minds", there are plenty of real and fictional murderers on there, they've probably either mentioned Magnotta or made an episode similar to his crime.

The casting was outstanding all the way around. Some was surprising but I understood many of the changes they made.
The one thing I would have liked would have been seeing more of Jerome. I just loved him in the book. And the three of them together were priceless. Interestingly, I liked the younger Holly.

I've only just started Mr. Mercedes, and I hate Brady's fictional guts. A sociopath and a wuss. Kurt Barlow, Randell Flag, or even Carrie's mom would make him crap his little pants! He's a gutless wonder.

I agree - I am not sure how anyone could defend him, admire him or think he is worthy of anything other than repulsion.

Did you see the video someone made about the Happy Slapper? Not sure if you have gotten to that part yet, so I won't say any more.

On second thought - don't look up the video! It would be a major spoiler if you have just started Mr. Mercedes and I'm not sure if you're a fast reader or not.

I enjoyed the other two books as well - Finders Keepers and End of Watch
