He used to watch NBC until he decided Brian Williams was a good-natured goof who’s too fond of YouTube videos. Not the sort of newscaster he wants when it seems like the whole world is falling apa—

What I can not understand is:
Why Hodge think Brian is good-natured goof?
"Brian is fond of Youtube vides " means he put much his news programs online instead of on TV?
Whole world is falling apart is the feeling Brian gives to Hodge, What causes Hodge feel like that? There is story happen to Brian?

I think he is trying to say that Brian is not a very deep person, the kind that prefers watching someone fall off a ladder on youtube, rather than be concerned with the important problems that are ripping at the world..I think he is saying that he wants a newsman who understands and ably reports the news, not some slick guy with a vocabulary that cannot comprehend or care about what he is reporting..
It doesn't have to do with online reporting,it is just the sense Hodges has of Brian's character.Hodges' feeling that the world is falling apart is his view of things in general, and he just wants an able reporter to relay them..

Considering what's happened to the real Brian Williams, I think Hodges did not have a very good sense of his character. Brian Williams is/was the type of character who'd do just about anything to make a good story, whether it was true or not. Of course, this all happened after Mr. Mercedes was published.
